In this video I compare the Pilot 78G and 78G+ including a writing sample from the extra-fine, fine, medium, and broad nibs.

Congratulations! An excellent collection! I myself am a Pilot fan, lost count how many their pens are on my desk and in my drawers. Anyway, I have 3 78 G+ - blue fine, green medium and red broad (actually italic), couldn't stop buying them. My favorite is red broad, it gives such a feedback while writing... These are cheap "student" pens but of superb quality. On squeaking - when you use the pen a tiny bit of hand grease gets into the threads on the body. It lubricates the threads and eventually the pen stops squeaking. If you carefully wash the treads both on the body and on the cap with alcohol the pen becomes squeaky again.

Thank you! This video is very helpful as I just got my first fountain pen which is a 78G, not too sure if it’s a plus or not but pilot sold it with a pink body and a bottle of ink tgt last year so I’m excited to try it! Looks like a great beginner pen which I was told by others as well

You're welcome! I think the pen and ink set you got is something new from Pilot. Last week someone told me about the new colors...I like them a lot.

I find that adding a small smear of silicon on all threads make unscrewing very nice and I believe it will even preserve the threads and reduce wear. This will certainly omit the squeaking sound. Give it a try.

Great information! I think that I need the weight of the Metropolitan and bought the entire animal collection and have purchased a couple or three in grey and orange online for $11.99 and given as gifts. I have considered ordering a Pilot 78G but guess I will stick with the Metropolitan pens since they’re heavier. I sure appreciate your adding in the medium and Italic nibs to show how they write. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@gadgetstop3213 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tennessee Believer! Since the Metropolitan and the 78G use the same grip section and nib, the writing experience is basically the same except for the weight. If you like a slightly heavier pen, the Metropolitan is the best choice. And at this time, the Metropolitan is easier and often less expensive to get in the US.

I have taken the path of the Kaküno, much cheaper where I live and which supports the con70. It is a pity that we are not able to buy spare nibs like these without a fragile body.
@gadgetstop3213 жыл бұрын
I agree Mateu, it would be nice to be able to buy spare nibs.

I finally found some 78G+ on eBay and three are now on order - an EF, F and a Broad. It will be interesting to compare these with my three 78G which I also only bought quite recently.

Could you please tell me if the new 78G+ Broad model has an italic (flat, no tipping material) nib as the original 78G Broad does? Thanks.

Just watch this video on the pilot 78g,I've own a few Pilot's but was always a bit wary of this low priced school pen,but must say i was impressed enough to order one today with the bonus of a Con 50 converter.Thanks.

You're welcome Edward. I've had good luck with all of them except the broad nib...it needed a little work. I like using the 78g for testing ink since it can be fully disassembled for thorough cleaning.

Wow, you have 6 Pilot 78 series. On the box, it says, 生産商:株式会社百楽 原産地:日本(合格品) means, manufacture:Pilot Corporation place of origin:Japan (product passed test) so, may be it's made in Japan, perhaps.

Is the writing experience the same using a Metropolitan and a 78G+? I ask because I'm thinking of getting the 78G+ with an EF nib and the Metropolitan with a F nib. Do you feel like they write differently or are the nibs the same?
@gadgetstop3213 жыл бұрын
The nibs are the same and interchangeable, and the sections are also the same and therefore interchangeable. The 78g nib is gold and the Metropolitan nib is silver, but they write the same.

How is the 78+ in regard to drying out?
@gadgetstop3213 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas. I haven't had problems with any of my 78Gs drying out. Sometimes they are left for days then start right up when I write with them again. I'm sure results will vary depending on the ink you're using though.

On squeeze converter - it's not a CON-20, it's a Metropolitan converter. A CON-20 looks a bit different, it has a metal body with a big "window" where you press inner plastic sac.
@alexeypopov3142 жыл бұрын
I forgot a detail - the sac is covered with a metal bar, I think to evenly squeeze it and protect from ripping.

Quick question here. Is this pen eyedroper convertible
@gadgetstop321 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is, but I have trouble with mine coming unscrewed at the section. This is probably due to the fact that I'm scared of over-tightening and and cracking the plastic.

On the box language - it's Chinese. As far as I know and my sources aren't that reliable the 78 G+ model made exclusively for China.

I have a clear demonstratérn78g + with the B calligraphy nib. Excellent in every way. I use Watermans Inspired Blue ink.
@gadgetstop32110 ай бұрын
Out of all my 78g nibs, the B calligraphy is the only one that has persistently failed to write properly. That appears to be a fluke, though, because the others are fantastic. The CM stub nib that came on my Metropolitan is a pleasant writer, though I did have to smooth it just a bit when it arrived. And the fine stub nib that came on my Pluminix was lovely out of the box. 😀

Normally the Japanese has the part of kanji in writing that is based on Chinese. And is normally combined with Japanese hiragana but that writing seems only have the Chinese characters if I saw correctly...

Yes, all the writing on the package is in Chinese. Must be for the Chinese market. Calling that one a broad is false labelling; it's a stub.
@aksela69123 жыл бұрын
Being so crisp and sensitive to rotation I'd call it a cursive italic. The labeling is still odd though, I agree.

These fountain pens have poor quality nibs. Comfort of writing is none. Total waste of money. Somehow other brands are able to make EF nibs without issues, like Faber Castell for instance. Then I bought additional nibs form Wings, better ones, but too dry. Besides these pens are very narrow, uncomfortable to hold. You have to have small childish hands, or hold it further. Poor quality plastic. It will definitively crack if dropped on floor. Only what they do, they look nice.
@gadgetstop321 Жыл бұрын
Out of my 6 pens (13 if you include my Kaküno, Pluminix, Metropolitan, Prera, and 3 Explorers, which all use the same type of nib) I've only had one bad nib. It was the broad nib on my red 78g. The 78g is made out of a cheap plastic, but the 78g is a cheap pen ($10) so that is understandable. Unfortunately I had to pay around $20 for each of mine because the 78g is no longer sold in North America so I had to pay for shipping from Asia, but that was okay with me because for me they are worth it. I suppose I have small, childish hands, because like the size, but I understand the grip section is just too narrow for most people.
