This was a good review call, Blake-I’m glad you’re hooked up with Pen Chalet (the repository of an awful lot of my pen-purchase dollars!). I like my Metros, but they’re old now and I'm wondering if Pilot has in the meantime tweaked that nib so it’s even sweeter in the Explorer and also the feed for better, more reliable ink flow. The 'portholes' do have a nautical look and, in fact, resemble the cap of my MB Jules Verne Writers Edition in that regard. Thanks, as always…

Thanks Jack! I don't notice a difference between the nib on this pen and my two Metropolitans. I've always thought they were great writers. I think my oldest Metro is maybe 7-9 years old. I love the Jules Verne. One of the coolest MB nibs and the guilloche and enamel is beautiful.

Good review! I own a Metropolitan, but I’d probably rather go with an Explorer or Prera if I could go back in time. I have to write with a lateral grip on the Metropolitan, because I find the pen tripod grip-unfriendly. On a side note, the Explorer may be a better choice among the three, since it is the only one that can take Con-70 converters.

The step up on the Metro can be a problem for some. The metal body give the Metro a high quality feel that I really appreciate at this price point but the Explorer and Prera of great pens too. I did not know that the Con-70 fits the Explorer.

As 'stealth' pens are quite popular it would have been nice if Pilot had fitted an all black nib to this model. I don't own the Explorer but I do have a Metropolitan and find the 'step up' between section and barrel uncomfortable. I think the Explorer looks more comfortable to hold. I was a little surprised it came with the rubber sac squeeze converter. I am not opposed to that filling system, on older pens. Somehow it just seems a bit old fashioned to have it on the Explorer. I have no idea what the 'porthole' is meant to be. It reminds me of a similar shape on the Narwhal Nautilus.

Thanks of the comment David! I haven't see black nibs on Pilot pens before but it would be nice. There is a ruthenium plated Vanishing Point nib. I agree about the step up issue on the Metropolitan. The Explorer does not have that issue. The squeeze sac converter is definitely old fashioned but it is nice that it is included. A Lamy Safari by comparison is more expensive and does not come with a converter.

I own both the Metropolitan and the Explorer. Both are great consistent writers. The only drawback to my Explorer is that the cap no longer snaps closed securely anymore.

Oooh I love this! I wonder how much it is, considering how cheap kakunos are I probably wouldn't bother paying more cause they so cute, unless it's a cool built on filler

Thanks. I just ordered this pen in black with F nib. Metropolitan is fine, but that grip section step is kind of annoying and it's a bit too heavy for me, so I hope this one to be a better EDC workhorse.

The holes on the side always remind me of their Pilot V5/V7 Rollerball pens.

According to stuff I heard around, Explorer used to be priced higher than MR/Metropolitan, in most places. Which is hard to justify the purchase especially when they are using identical nib and Explorer being plastic. It is cheaper than MR/Metropolitan now.

It is definitely matte like a Lamy 2000 but I think the Explorer is too different to be considered an homage.

Sorry, but Platinum has better QC than Pilot. Of all the mass producers of FPs, Platinum probably has the best QC.

I am going off of my personal experience and the feedback I have gotten. It is a small sample so it is absolutely possible that I am wrong. If you are working with a more robust data set that you can show me then I would be grateful to you for ridding me of my misconception.

@@BlakesBroadcast Just going by my personal experience of ownership. Only Platinum pens in my collection (all 7 of them) have been flawless out of the box. All other brands have at least some minor faults or serious issues. I have many Pilots, which I lost count, but likely approaching 20 maybe more. They have been great but quite a few had minor issues. A few Custom 74s had dry flow out of the box. One custom 823 has a scratchy burr. A Custom 743 has a minor starvation issue. From my years of frequenting the fountainpennetwork, only one brand has very rarely elicited a complaint, and that brand is Platinum. In fact, I can't recall a single complaint about its QC. The same can't be said about any other brand, including Pilot.

@@wwbdwwbd Thank you for sharing your experience! By my rough count I am just at under 30 Pilots and at 10 Platinums. I've had two problematic Platinum Preppies. I have not had any issues with their higher end pens. With Pilot I have had 0 issues and that includes a lot of cheap steel nib pens which is why I recommend Pilot on smaller budgets. Pilot makes a lot more pens than Platinum so I am not sure I would consider more threads on the FPN proof. I think our samples are too small to be considered truly significant. @@BlakesBroadcast Ah, I see. I have no experience with Preppys. All my Platinum are gold nibbed. Not sure if Pilot sells a FP at a similar price point so that a comparison can be made.
