This Supersonic clip shows Pilot singing one of my favourite songs 'Just A Smile'. The lads are introduced by Sir Cliff Richard. I love everything about this!

Just finished reading Davy Paton's superb memoir "MAGIC" which it is, as are all the great Pilot songs. Timeless classic pop from a much underrated group. No wonder their songs stand up 50 years on - it's magic you know.

This was the 4th and last hit Pilot had in the UK. It's amazing those songs still get played today after nearly 50 years. Their debut album was the first one I ever bought in 1974. It was a cassette and I've still got it. Need to find a cassette player somewhere to see if it still plays!! Just a Smile was the opening track on the album which also had the legendary "Magic" on it. I was just a kid then, but these songs have stayed with me for all those years. I wish I had a time machine.

PiLot had a knack for a catchy hook with great lyrics - testimony to the musicianship and song writing of lead David Paton. 'Just a Smile' (UK #31), isn't really considered a hit but is every bit as good as their UK #1, 'January'.

I think it's a fantastic song from start to finish. Like the melody a lot, even the very energetic lead vocal and the strong guitars. Like it a lot more than "January". You can't get this song out off your head. Heard it on Radio Luxembourg when it came out.

What a lovely melody and sentiment. Sadly here in the US, the only release that saturated the radio was “Magic” which I loved. Would have loved this track and “January “

This is a great example of British pop music from the mid seventies. I still have the original 45 rpm single somewhere in my collection. While January and Magic were bigger hits, this record did get some radio air play.

Good pop song not great. Unlike January and Magic, not particularly memorable unless associated with a particular event/something in the listeners life to give it memorable relevance. Seals & Crofts were the same. A couple of real show stopping feelgood hits that are unforgettable which transport you immediately back in time, but most of their albums were mediocrity fill.

"Pretty good"? He was considered an excellent guitarist. He recently passed away this year. Must have been really hard for David since they were such really close friends for decades.
