For anyone confused about the aircraft pictured in the second clip. It is known as the Cessna 172 RG Cutlass. RG stands for Retractable Gear… it is the only Cessna 172 model with such features.

If they knew their gear wasn't working, why wouldn't they retract the gear? It seems that leaving it out increased the risk of tipping the prop into the grass, and flipping over the nose.

That first clip is insane, he only just had a pilot license then with limited experience lands his plane on a highway in a curve without hitting cars I’d say he’s gonna be one of the greatest pilots ever if he gets more experienced

@@FiveTwoSevenTHR do you have extra information on where this happened, for all we know it might have been like avianca 52 that he was in a holding pattern for yo long And in my eyes even tho the mistake of to little fuel is a very stupid error, this landing was something that a lot of seasoned pilots would avoid because of the curve and the cars

@@Donuts_random_stuff back when it happened, there were youtube channels talking about him but he started to copyright strike everyone that showed that he really ran out of fuel. I'm going off of memory here that he left florida and flew for about 4-5 hours without ever stopping at an airport that actually had fuel. He says it had a fuel issue where he ran into engine issues when it stopped feeding fuel from one of the wing tanks. The Rockwell commander 100 that he was flying has a both fuel selector like a 172 and it'll happily run on just a single wing tank meaning that he didn't check his fuel tanks before take off since this did happen right after take off.

Fun fact about the pilot that landed on the highway, he ran too low on fuel after flying for 4-5 hours without refueling according to the now deleted radar data. They added fuel and he took back off. He had great skills to back up his poor planning.

@@thephilpott2194 running out of gas in a plane one cannot coast to the side of the road. A friend of mine landed in a bean field because he was too cheap to pay an extra dollar a gallon at a fly in. Ended up costing him a lot more when two IAs and myself had to bring him gas and spend 5 hours convincing the local cops it was legal to fly out of the bean field and the city had no jurisdiction

@@bountyhunter4885 Because this video is a repost. I know more about this than you and the person that made this compilation. The pilot had an interview that he later took down where he said they added fuel and ran it for a bit and then he took back off and flew home. No repairs were done, they just added fuel and he flew home.

As some have stated, first guy ran the plane out of gas. Poor planning, very poor planning. He claimed 'clogged' filter yet no records indicate a filter change while on the ground by the highway. He simply fueled up and took off. Pilots have been given 'a number to call' for far less.

@@evlindy Not outside of a simulator, but I have driven stick. It’s awful. At least with a Yolk it’s a single control surface controlling multiple inputs. Stick shift is a fucking nightmare.

@@shermansquires3979 well you see that’s the thing the Cessna 172 never flew fast enough to necessitate the need for retractable gear. They designed a variant with retractable gear to enhance aerodynamics and increase its cruising speed however, it never increased by much the Cessna 172 cutlass has a cruising speed of roughly about 130 kn, which is only 10 kn faster than the original variant.

It's bizarre to me that the cars just keep carrying on as if there wasn't a plane trying to land on the highway. For some even a lane change seems to be too much to ask.

The highway landing was probably the most impressive of all the clips. I think you really need some sort of transition with a vocal pause between different clips, it's pretty jarring when you're talking in detail about one incident and move straight on to the next with no pause or transition. Hope you don't take this the wrong way.

This novice pilot made an exceptionally successful emergency landing. He didn't panic, kept a cool head, managed to follow the turn in the runway perfectly, maintained an excellent rate of descent and, after separating the cars, put the Cessna down buttery soft on the tarmac. Asphalt is not forgiving (I speak from experience with 6,000+ landings). This pilot, level Sullenberger, has talent for the profession!

The arrogance of some of these pilots is amazing. Not sure how they come to believe their lives are worth more than anyone else's. You as a pilot put yourself up there, if things go south that's a risk that you accepted not anyone else's.

Skills apart, I find irresponsible to land a plane on a highway: you get to kill yourself + the car drivers, UNLESS he had not enough altitude to look fot an open grass field..
