If you ever use bold nibs, you'll see the gradations of an ink where some parts are darker and some areas are lighter. With fine that has a consistent ink flow, it's almost always the darkest possible an ink can give unless it's too viscous to flow as well through the nib.

Hi! I just subscribed- I love your reviews! I have a question. Have you seen the Pilot Lady White/Sakura fountain pen? I am in love with the color white and Cherry Blossoms. But I'm a guy. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

I've had a few trusty Metropolitans.for years, 2 Fine 1 Medium, great workhorse daily reliable pens. I've wanted a blue one for ages, but that color isn't available. I ordered a Cocoon fine in brushed blue metallic, it writes the same, is just as reliable. The ONLY difference that I noticed is the Cocoonvis very slightly, barely noticeable a touch heavier. I don't have a scale, so THANK YOU for confirming that for me, and letting me know I wasn't imagining it. The Cocoon is about 1 gram heavier, if that. Great pens. I'm a Pilot/Namiki fan. In the whole collection I have only 3 that aren't Pilot. A Pineider, a Conklin, and a vintage Parker that was my Dad's. * My Cocoon didn't come with a converter. I had a few extra press plate converters (I'm in the US, and that's what I call them) I prefer those to the larger Con 40 and 50's smaller capacity means I can switch out inks more often (ink addict) My Pilot Custom 74 FINE is the rare bird that I use a Con-70 in and always use the same ink, Iroshizuku Aso-gao. IMHO press plates are also just the easiest to fill.

I can't find CON-20s or new CON-50s (I have one CON-50 from a second hand pen) and the rest are either the newer squeeze converters (what Brian Goulet calls cleaning converters) or CON-40s which are annoyingly fiddly to get a good fill without doing the invert - expel air - refil trick. I believe the 20 + 50 are now both superseded by the 40, so that makes sense. I have a number of CON-70s in my Kakunos but sadly these don't fit in Metros, Preras or 78Gs. I've started flushing and syringe refilling Pilot/Namiki cartridges (with Iroshizuku inks mostly) in these as it's the only way to get a large enough capacity.

@@bikkies I sooo dislike the Con 40, it IS a fiddly little thing. I'll take the press plate/squeeze/ cleaning converter any day. The smaller capacity just let's me play with more inks more often. At first I hated the Con 70, but once I got the hang of using it correctly I changed my mind. 2 of my EDC pens use that, and I don't switch the inks on those two, always the same work acceptable with a twist and dome oomph inks. I use them constantly every day and it seems like somehow I never have to refill. Lol

I just discovered that the Metro (and related MR & Cocoon) come in not only FPs but G2 rollerball and mechanical pencil. I have an F fountain version which writes so smoothly and I want an M and CM (1.0 stub), but now I want one for G2 (the only ball pen I use regularly) and a pencil to round out the family. I constantly loose the cheap pencils I have and loan out my G2s but one of each of these would make sure I don't loose my tools!

The only differences I could research was as follows: 1. the difference in the feed is due to the fact that the Metropolitan can take standard international cartridges while the Cocoon only takes proprietary Pilot cartridges. 2. I don't have this confirmed but the Cocoon supposedly uses a denser ABS styrene plastic which the Metropolitan does not. That still does not explain price.
@TokyoPenShop
@TokyoPenShop 9 жыл бұрын
David Parente - Thank you so much for this helpful information! The material would explain a difference in the barrel weight, but I agree the price difference is still an odd mystery, unless you just chalk it up to the Japanese pen market just being more expensive.

this is incorrect the metropolitan uses the proprietary pilot cartridges and converters, the MR uses standard international cartrages.

Pilot would (for antitrust reasons) never admit it, but many, including pen distributors, believe it is intentionally priced as an entry level pen in the USA, at an inexplicably low price. As long as the price is not below actual costs to produce, Pilot avoids a dumping charge. In truth, on goods this low priced, I doubt Justice would pursue it.

Nice comparison. I would love to see you try fitting an international standard cartridge on the Cocoon. Here's a summary of the differrences I have found. "Metropolitan" - US market "MR" - European market "Cocoon" - Asian market The Metropolitan uses the included "squeeze bladder", CON 20, CON 40, CON 50, and proprietary ink cartridges The MR (and Cocoon?) will also take an international converter for higher ink capacity.

I bought a Pilot Metropolitan Retro pop from the USA from the here in the UK where I live. It has cm on the nib . I can't find this cm nib on the Retro pens on sale here in the UK. The shipping and import costs from the USA are £25. I love that cm nib. Do you have them on the Cocoon?
@bikkies
@bikkies 3 жыл бұрын
The nibs are interchangeable between Plumix/Kakuno/Metro/MR/Prera. A couple of my Preras have the CM nib so I could swap these out with a metro or MR nib - I may try this, but I'm more likely going to swap a Plumix nib out into a Metro or MR and see how it writes.

There is a $14 difference between purchasing the Cocoon here in the States, vs. purchasing it from Tokyo. More costly in Tokyo.

You get what you paid for. I have both. After not using either for a week, it is harder to get the Metro to write again. The Cocoon just writes like you used it yesterday. Both pens capped, same ink, both stored nib up.
@bikkies

I don't have a cocoon yet but I have 20 (yikes!) of the others. Most are the UK/Europe MR/MR2/MR3 which take standard international cartridges/converters and a handful that are USA market taking Pilot proprietaries, as with yours. I believe the UK/EU onea aren't officially metropolitans but they are the same pen body and colours / designs as the US ones. The feeds are not interchangeable between UK/EU MRx pens and US Metros - they do not fit so I'm guessing there is a difference in bore diameter between UK/EU and US ones. I've been curious about the cocoon so this is a very helpful video - thank you. I've also read elsewhere that the cocoon has a smoother nib than the metro; aside from that and the colour options, no other differences seem to stand out.

It is a great option, but over time the cartridge will deteriorate and might crack, spilling ink into your pen. I do it, but not for a long time.

Where does the Pilot MR fit in with these two?
@3167667
@3167667 7 жыл бұрын
MR is the European version of the Metropolitan. Differs in that the MR takes standard international cartridges and converters (as required by European countries); whereas the Metro takes Pilot proprietary cart/conv. The two are available in same colourways.
@julieparadise9694
@julieparadise9694 7 жыл бұрын
"Required" might be misleading, as it would be (legally) possible to sell the pen in Europe with Pilot's cartridges, but it is a lot easier to get standard international cartridges here than Pilot's proprietary cartridges. It simply is a selling point.

Thank you for this. I really like the Metro, but I strongly dislike the patterned bands, much prefer one single color. Blue would be great (a color that the Metro doesn't even offer) and burgundy too. The converter that comes with the Metro is called a squeeze converter in the US - don't like it, so I use the CON-40. I didn't know there was a CON-50.

In case you haven't found the answer, I hope this help. Nib is interchangeable between these Pilot fountain pen: Kakuno, Metropolitan, Prera, Plumix, Penmanship. So if you want a finer nib than the F on the Metrpolitan, your best bet is to get your self a Penmanship, swap it out. I did it to my Metropolitan White Tiger.
