Welcome back to another ‘Pilot Tutorial’ of the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020! Today we’ll be looking at a Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 full IFR flight along with a Garmin G1000 tutorial and ILS approach! I review and discuss the G1000 & how to operate it during the cruise portion of a full IFR flight from Vancouver to Victoria, BC. Thanks for watching friends! Let me know what other tutorials you'd like to see below!!
FIRST FS2020 BASIC TUTORIAL HERE: bit.ly/34YaNUL
PS: I made a mistake - I mentioned the standby battery test is to check whether there's enough juice to power up the engine, but it's the main battery that does that, not the standby battery. The test is to check if the standby can power up the PFD during start up :) Thanks to Capt Joe for pointing that out!!

To get the minimums call out with a G1000, you have to select “BARO” instead of “OFF” to the left of where you input your minimums altitude. (Never played Flight Sim but it works in the real thing). Have fun not busting through minimums.

As a private pilot who just got checked out in the G1000 C172 and for whom all this has not become yet second nature, I found this tutorial to be quite a useful review. One recommendation from my instructor (and also from the author of a good G1000 book): take advantage of the redundancy and always use only the buttons in the center (i.e. right side of the PFD and left side of the MFD). It's faster because you move your hand less and you don't block the view of the PFD instruments while you set up NAV frequencies, heading, altitude, A/P etc. Of course, this is more relevant for flying the real thing, but it helps not to change the habit when practicing with the simulator.

I have watched hundreds of hours of pilots in real airplanes, and certainly have my favorites, but I am really enjoying your teaching style (Asperger's syndrome, major depressive disorder) Flight simming was a major thrill for me for many years and I was never afraid to tackle a new challenge. You have a excellent teaching style. A long time ago, the United States Air Force trained me as a Navigation Systems Specialist (Tactical AC). Learned about ILS, TACAN, VOR, IFF, and a bunch of secret stuff. I knew the concepts, and electronic theory in regards to how these systems operate. I never actually flew. Watching your videos have filled in a bunch of missing gaps in regards to how to use. Have had two successful sim flights in which I felt like I kinda knew what I was doing. Last missing gap, for me, is VOR landings. Keep up the good work!

If you think the Pilot's Guide for G1000 is big, you should see the Maintenance Manual! As an Avionics Tech, G1000 ( and 3000/5000, which are slightly better) is, hands down, one of the most temperamental and crazy systems I've ever had to deal with on ANY aircraft. Indeed, great when everything is working. Sucks REAL bad when it's not!! Great Video Emilie!

I'm enjoying that you use, and more importantly explain, a lot of the terminology and acronyms I hear other avid sim'ers or real pilots use. I'm just clicking buttons that do what I want but hearing you explain something like "pfd" stands for primary flight display vs "mfd" multi-function display really makes it all click together for me. I've heard ATC talking about bugs before but never understood till now. Keep making these great vids!

Suggest you zoom in to the PFD for example so we can see a little bit clearer what you're doing. Look under CONTROLS --> KEYBOARD then instrument views or something like that to see the mappings. Also for some reason wasn’t able to set the vertical speed; it kept on randomly changing. Luckily the plane just kinda did it’s own thing on the way down to the runway and somehow got over threshold. I’ll give it another go in the morning. Great to be back in Victoria 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 🇨🇦

Please make tutorials about other specific things like VNV. You are a great teacher and i am finally feeling like i am not playing a game but rather learning my way around an actual plane.

Good video! Small tip. Use instrument view and you get a close up view and easier to set. Another tip, being that the yoke is actually there on the aircraft, it is counter intuitive to use the buttons on the left of the PFD. To mimic RL, I use the buttons on the right of the MFD. this gives me two things, I can keep my left hand on or near the yoke and everything I need to access is in easy reach with my right hand. This is very evident when you are actually flying and making adjustments.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing your expertise on this! I actually just tried Vancouver to Victoria before seeing this, but as a casual flight sim fan, was trying to figure out if the 172 had autopilot! So perfect video (though I might have to watch a few times to soak it all in)!

Fantastic tutorial, thanks. I learned a lot. Good to see the FS AI is as weird as ever - Cleared to land with a 747 doing barrel roles over the airport and another airplane mooching along the runway.

I subscribed after the first video I watched. I love all things aviation and want to go to flight school eventually. Love your videos!! They're so interesting and entertaining since you're an actual pilot and know what you're doing.

Hi Emilie, I stumbled into your vlog, really glad I did as your tutorials on sim2020 is amazing, very clear and easy to understand. I have been using sim for couple of years but finally 2020 is amazing, pilots dream come true. I take flying lessons on cesena and piper and find this sim useful. Thank you for your amazing work and hope you get your job back... Shah from 🇬🇧

YYJ, my home airport. Did many circuits there since that’s where I learned to fly. Approach to 09 is very realistic. I remember that runway well. Great instructions on the G1000. I wish I had that in my bird.
