Classic 250 / 2213 on Amazon: geni.us/Ixd3P
Biohome products: www.filterpro.co.uk
The 2213 / classic 250 is a very popular filter which with a few tweaks can be made to be very effective. When upgraded this filter would be suitable for a tank of around 125 litres (33 US gallon) to achieve a full cycle in a normally stocked tropical community tank or a heavily stocked tank of around 65 litres (17 US gallon) for a full cycle.
I only consider true filtration to be a full cycle which is the reduction of ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate hence the low figures - filters will not be nitrate factories when they are properly sized and properly set up.
This series is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on:
sales@filterpro.co.uk
07772848730 (Richard)
Anyone who sends a filter will have it upgraded and returned to them for free and the only cost you will pay is how much it costs to ship it to me - I'm helping to boost your filter and the resulting videos will hopefully be useful to viewers all over the world so it's a win/win.
Please do not send any filters without contacting me first as I want to try and cover every type of filter, not 20 of the same make and model
Due to the high international shipping cost I am currently only taking filters from the UK but I'm hoping that as this series progresses a useful database of knowledge will be built up which will help viewers understand how their filters work, the limitations and the steps you could take to improve filtering capacity and efficiency.
The goal with any filter is to try and achieve FULL CYCLE filtration which is the reduction in ammonia, nitrite AND nitrate - if you look anywhere online you'll see people tell you that the nitrogen cycle in an aquarium ends with the production of nitrate which is removed by regular (often large) water changes.
That is HALF the cycle and is done by AEROBIC bacteria which favors highly oxygenated conditions and is very easy to grow on any surface.
The last part of the cycle (reduction in nitrate) is completed by ANAEROBIC bacteria which favors an environment which is very low or devoid of oxygen. It takes filter media with a very specific internal structure to support both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to allow for full cycle filtration but a suitably sized, well set up filter, will allow the full cycle to complete which results in more stable water conditions and less water changes (typically 10% every 1-2 weeks). Canister filters will generally offer the best provision for filter media but even internals can be significantly improved to boost water quality and fish health.
The following videos will be useful to anyone interested in learning more about filtration, bacteria and making the conditions for your fish as good as possible:

Pondguru hello Richard I have a question. What cleaning my canister filter when I emptied everything else and dumped out the rest of the water I noticed something moving in the water residue left on the very bottom of the filter they don't look like worms I'm wondering if you know what these creatures might be and whether or not they're harmful to my face or Aquarium thank you.

@Pondguru I have a few questions I'm hoping you can help me with. I'm currently cycling a 75 gallon (350litres) hillstream tank with 2 filters, an Eheim 4 600 that I got new and an Eheim Professionel 2 600 that I got 2nd hand from a guy I know. Question 1: The professionel series 2 makes a rattling sound. At first I thought it was trapped air, however I'm fully confident there is nothing in there. So I bought a new rotor and replaced the old one, but it is _still_ making a rattling sound. It pumps fine, but that sound.... Are you familiar with this issue and do you have a fix? Question 2: The professionel series 4. I've been out of the hobby for a while and just stacked this filter as you would do a series 2 or a classic for that matter, from bottom to top. However, I noticed that the top tray contains a bypass valve and a coarse pad. Apparently what happens is that the water enters the top tray with the coarse pad, and _then_ proceeds to the bottom of the canister where it does the usual bottom to top flow. Can you confirm this? The only picture I have found online is in a 200x240 resolution so i can't really make out what is happening exactly there. Question 3: Nitrate factory. What if one would elect to _not_ have a full cycle because they are running a planted tank, what biological media would you say is best if you really want to keep that nitrate? Since I'm running such an oversized filtration setup, I'm afraid I'm gona go full cycle no matter what I do... Thanks in advance for helping out! Cheers

I went to my local aquarium store and got into the topic of Eheim and how the quality with the newer Pro filters has been going down slightly and then she told me a story about a customer who came into the store with an Eheim filter that needed a part replaced and they looked online and this particular filter was made in the 60s. That is quality...

Without using the supplied media basket you don’t get bypass. With the basket, as soon as the sponges clog the water flows up the outside of the basket bypassing most of the media. Strangely, and luckily, only the 2213 uses a media basket.

Cracking idea with the plant pot always more tips every time. Another thought you could get some thin bendy pvc plastic sheet and cut it to wrap around the inside, to block up the holes at the edges. The tip about crushed filter floss not working right 👌 thank you guru !

As long as you have enough media for the tank size and stocking situation it should only be a matter of time until a full cycle develops. Thanks for the offer of the filter but depending on what part of the US you are in it could cost between £35 and £50 to ship it back.

can't thank you enough. All the filters were inside ( a few pond KZfaqrs say do it that way) - including the white and carbon, so this is really useful + using the pot. I've been using Alfagrog E25 but of course my filters were the wrong way round. I have Pleco's, for each filter change I have to clean the pipes, head and impeller. I've upgraded my 2213 with set 1 & 2 (inlet and spray bar) and also use a Eheim pre-filter.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds good to me and the 25mm alfagrog is a decent media, especially for dirty situations where it works better than highly porous media since it doesn't clog - alfagrog has the vast majority of the surface area externally so tends to support a massively heavier aerobic than anaerobic population of bacteria.

Nice video, got two Eheim 2013 on my Juwel rio 180 in parallel flow and yes the mechanical setup whit only one classic you need a basket in the first stage and we did that already years and years ago when it game out in 1986. The greater models 2015-2017 and up -have a space holder for this problem. I use two of them parallel, one fully mechanical first in the bottem some rings then biomech (not the plastic ones) then coarse-medium spons and filterpad ,then the second is fully stock whit only biomedia sera 1 liter Siporax and on top 1.5liter Eheim substrate pro. This combination works very well in the past and now. This type of filter is the best ones Eheim ever made if it comes on quality and lifespan, got my two boy's from 1989 and stil working like new. The Pro series omygod to expensive and plastic crap.. that's why my Eheim Pro 4+ is already broken after only 1 year.. shame on you eheim.

Thanks for the videos. It has inspired me to have a go at "pimping" one of my filters. Fortunately, I am shifting tanks around, so finally have a tank that will not be required for some time, so it gives me a chance to redo the media. So, my Jewel Bioflow 1 was free. So stuck in some of the coarse, medium and fine filter material, and some bio media I had in the small amount of extra space that was still available. Overall, not very much media really, but hopefully will make some difference. I've popped it in my 55g with a APS EF1400 filter to hopefully get it seeded over the next few months. I do have an APS EF1400 and a Fluval FX6 in my other tanks, but wouldn't have the ability to send them to you for "pimping" since they are in use currently. Although I'd be happy to send either for "pimping", I just don't have a spare filter while either would be getting pimped and seeded. And didn't think you would need to be too interested in pimping such a small, entry level filter. Anyway, thanks to your educational videos, I am confident that I have significantly increased my filters potential.

I have the 2217. I use a couple extra Eheim 2217 lattice screens to stand off the foam so it is not crushed (The feet poke though the foam). This eliminates the cone shape issue of using a plastic planter basket. It ensures the water path does not escape through the sides of the cone once the fine media starts to push back.

In my eyes the eheim classic is one if not the best canister it is a bit old school but if u get one with the dividers in it say a 2215 or 2217 or even the mega beast 2262 you can turn it into a great filter if set up right put media in media bags so it's easy to pull out n clean the filters are almost silent they hold alot of media there's no bypass there orings are the best you'll buy they last many many years there very reliable and the motor blocks just run decades I saw a video a man ran one for 5 year non stop on a tank just to see how long it'd take to break down it ran 5years without cleaning that's mad it's a shame for any fish n the tank but that proves how good they are most filters put out 50% of there rated flow the classics put out 60+% the 2213(250)puts of 80%well mine did at 0.9meters I once forgot to lock the lid n it still never leaked you do need to Handel them with care as the in and output nozzles can break off over years the replacement parts are easy to get the only filter I like more wouid be the fzone, ada or oase biomaster but there over twice the price

Media from another aquarium that has had sufficient time to establish healthy & stable bacteria. Typically, this means the filter's capable of efficiently breaking down waste to the 3rd stage (nitrates). It's typically used for those that want to house a fish immediately after purchasing a tank.

Hello, This is my first introduction into canister filters. I just bought the model in the video. Mine came with 4 shutoff valves. Mech, blue (they claim its course filter pad but could be med ) coco pops, fine white pad an carbon pad. You sir are the only one i've found to demonstrate the important of not squashing your sponges. My biggest fear is fooding the carpet, or if there's a blackout out in the middle of the night while im sleeping, what would happen?! Would water back up an flood the carpet?. I have a few questions: (Q1) Instructions says, to work efficiently, canister should be 180cm below top of water mark. My aquarium is on a chest of draws, so if i keep canister below top of water mark, on top of my chest of draws next to my aquarium, will it still run efficiently? (Q2) those course ,med, an fine pads seem to fit the canister perfectly. So what size are they an where can i purchase each one?..Especially the ridged variety. What's the band name? (Q3) I've got a planted aquarium, so what can i use instead of the carbon pad?..Because carbon will remove vital stuff from my fertilizer and other metals that the fish an plants need. (Q4) That perforated plant pot you said is 15 cm, but the actual part of the pot that you used . what did that measure? Also i live in Australia so im not sure if your site ships to my country . Thankyou.

Mister B’s -fish and things Yes, my old classic didn’t have a basket, just a couple of plastic grilles. I think I prefer the grilles, the basket takes up space.
@fastihavet
@fastihavet 6 жыл бұрын
Nice! I have never seen that basket. All the ones I have has a green plastic divider that you put in the bottom to lift the first of the media from the inlet. It does give the filter a bit more space inside that the basket itself takes up. But does not do wonders for when you have to clean the filter :-) I like the simplicity of these filters, they are very bare bones and have few parts that can break. But they do lack many modern features that I often miss. Adding shutoff valves to the inlet and outlet is one of the best upgrades that can be done. Otherwise my filter cleaning is relegated to days when I do massive water changes...

Yes these are a bit 1970's for sure but ultimately do the same job as a 'modern' filter. I'm actually surprised that Eheim still make them given their limitations.

The benefit to the classic series, is the incredible volume to size ratio, the benefit of fewer moving parts, the small footprint, the the quiet motor, and finally the reliability. I've gone through dozens of different filters and I still always go back to the Eheim classic series. You've definitely maximized the usable space inside that canister, but its also important to note that the media expands once it is saturated with water; thus if you fill it up correctly you shouldn't have your fine filtration flattened before it has a chance to catch the fine particulate matter. Also, what do you think of the pinky filters? I've found them to be incredibly useful if you are frustrated with changing out fine filter pads before the rest of the mechanical filtration gets saturated with gunk.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын

Years ago I was advised to put sintered glass media in a microwave oven to clean / recharge it . The idea is that water inside the media turnes to superheated steam which blasts its way out cleaning the holes as it goes .
@pondguru

Hmmmm....I've not head of that method but I can't think why it wouldn't work unless there was water in sealed cavities which may explode?
@theboesmani

I tried it once with Siporax and there were no problems . If water can get into a cavity then it should be able to get back out as steam . I suppose that it is possible that the sudden increase in internal pressure could cause poor quality media to crack .

Can I make a suggestion I had an idea when watching this video when you cut the plant pot to fit instead of cutting it round at the bottom you could cut it so there are a few strips ie 3 or 4 that can go right down to the bottom of the tube to take the weight of the media from pushing down on the filters at the bottom and keeping them light and fluffy just an idea I had if I'm wrong just tell me to shut up lol

I bought a second hand one of these but it had no basket inside. So I roughly cut some pond filter divider (light defuser/egg crate) into a circular shape and trimmed it down until it slid inside and stayed at the height I wanted. Wouldn't setup half as well if I hadn't seen some of pondguru's older videos but I think I have to much mechanical filtration and not enough biological. Thanks PG
@pondguru

The amount of biological filtration depends purely on the size of tank and stock so if you've got enough media for a full cycle its fine to add more foams for better mechanical filtration and that's necessary for messy feeders like piranha.

How does the Biohome Ultimate effect aquarium plant fertilizers, if at all? I have a high tech planted tank and need the nitrogen in the water, as it is one of the most important nutrients for the plants.
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
Plants can still thrive in an aquarium which tests low or no nitrate as there will always be some nitrate in the water due to the end product from the aerobic side of the biological filtration. The media does not affect any additional nutrients as it is a biological media simply there to support bacteria, not draw in any organic matter or chemicals. If you have lots of plants then the filter media choice is less important as the plants will draw in a large amount of nitrate as food but in most tanks there aren't enough plants to make much (or any) difference to nitrate, hence the need for a certain amount of suitable media to support the anaerobic bacteria to naturally reduce the nitrate.

If you put in the last foam mechanical filtration part in on top, it will ruin your pump in a day. I did exactly this and it broke my filter. It is just to close to the pump. I know this video is old, but just wanted to let you know and maybe somebody else will read it and it will not happen to them. Hi Pondguru, I have a question about the bottom disc grate on these filters.(not sure if the 2213 has it, since it has the basket - but models like the 2211, 2215 etc they have these grates both at the top and bottom) Do you put the grate at the very bottom, and then the Mech Media over it? Or does the Mech go in first, then cap it with the grate, and after that you put the coarse, medium, biohome, etc...
@pondguru
@pondguru 6 жыл бұрын
Yes if filter has a grate leave the grate in the bottom then put foams above that. The 'mech' media can go under the bottom grate as the grate does not go all the way to the bottom as far as I can remember.

I've already taken your advice setting up my Ecco, and my Professional 2, along with Biohome. Now, I'm just trying to find a suitable perforated plastic pot that fits inside of my Classic 2213. So, my question is.... while your philosophy makes perfect sense to me with regard to performing all mechanical filtration before reaching the biological filtration media, why has a company like Eheim suggested a different setup? I mean, they've been in business for decades, and I'm sure they've got highly experienced German engineers designing their products. What gives? Why would they overlook such a simple concept?

That's one I'm not familiar with unfortunately. I've looked online to see if I can get a water flow picture or some sort of exploded diagram which will tell me how water flows around the filter but nothing applicable comes up. Many of the Eheim filters will only have plastic or ceramic mechanical media followed by the biological media and in those cases the mechanical filtration can easily be replaced with foams and a fine pad. Unless I have one her to take a part or can find a good picture / diagram or a video showing exactly how it works I can't advise on that particular filter.

With doubled up foams in the filter(s) it should easily keep it clear - maybe the inlet / outlet need adjusting to draw water in / circulate it more effectively? a simple thing like that can make a difference to how much is removed from the tank. Another thing it could be is fish slime - are they chasing each other / breeding at present? I know from the pictures you post on instagram that the fish look in good condition so I doubt it's anything like a slime parasite but breeding behaviour can result in floating organic matter from slime which is knocked off.
