How to make a cheap Plastic handled Ferro rod into a custom wooden one.
A Ferrocerium rod is possibly the most popular Bushcraft tool after a knife. This video shows how I modify one, giving it a unique look and custom feel. Hope you enjoy, please hit the thumbs up if you do and as always subscribe.

I'm doing the same thing but with a beautiful piece of fatwood. I'm going to make it over-sized in case there's ever a need for emergency tinder. I don't have any fancy wood working tools so I plan on just using a knife. It's going to look rustic. Yours looks great...thanks!

Subbed after I watched your Morakniv pimp vid😆. Of course you can get ferro blanks, Bayite seems to be the best compromise between the hard sparky variety and the dragon snot slinging softer ones that are higher in magnesium. Chuck up a square hunkof High speed steel lathe bit material like this, and it gives ya 4 edges for running a ferro, and a nice matched set. Save the knife spine for the SHTF in the woods stuff

Keep in mind to start carving when and while it’s green. Very hard wood, great for crafts. Best of luck on the handle.

@@volleytheory Thanks. Most of what I have is very dry. Have you tried carving a spoon dry? I saw someone do it with poplar. In shaping walking sticks I have found that it was not too hard to work with. However splits will run out on you. It is also a great wood for burning designs into the walking stick handle.

After the epoxy has set you can fasten the ferro rod into your drill and spin the ferro rod to shape the handle with a piece of sandpaper in your hand or on the bench. You can easily control the speed and sand at a rate that you feel safe and comfortable with. This method also works well for sharpening punches or awls if you get my point, no pun intended. Stay safe!
@SwampValley
@SwampValley 3 жыл бұрын
Yea, I've tried that but I find it's hard to sand evenly, especially close to the ferro rod where it's really thin, I think on a lathe it would be easier but I don't got one yet. All the best mate 👍 Skye

Skye, thanks for all your vids; the wife and I are chilling from the sofa (in the warm!) throughout our lockdown afternoons by binge watching the Valley on the big TV - keep them coming! I'm hoping for a few less arctic days sometime soon, so I can get back in the workshop and make a little sheath for my Hults axe without freezing my toes off; I'll be stealing some ideas from yours, obviously. Hi as well to Colin, and the rest of the Swamp family and friends too. Great to watch your interview with Yankee the other day!

Nice video. I have been using branches from trees in my garden (we say yard in the US). I let them dry for about six months first. I have cherry, oak, hawthorn, pear, holly, redbud, and crepe myrtle. I basically do the same as you have shown. I do the major part of shaping with my Mora and then finish off with hand sanding. Mine have worked better than the plastic handles. I now just buy the rods off of Amazon and then add the handle.
@SwampValley

Thanks John, sounds like you've got a nice yard 👍 Yea I just buy the bars too, it's crazy I've got about 20 ferro rods now and I could probably light fires for the rest of my life with 2 or 3 big ones 😅 All the best mate 👍 Skye
