The 3DS’ code name wasn’t Citra but rather Citrus

It's OK. The DS flashcards work well on 3ds. But yeah. I guess ideally you are using a Dsi for nds.

With some elbow grease, you can awe your friends by having games and homebrew from Game Boy, Color, Advanced, DS and 3DS, all in one lean and mean device.

yeah the first thing i did was dump all my 3ds and ds games on the sd card, the godmode application is quite handy for that 👍👍 plus the retro stuff too, and 3d classics! something the 2ds owners can't use lol

The CIA file extension is short for Citra Installer Archive (Citra is the internal/codename for the 3DS.) That's why they named it FBI.

Also this is why Citra emulator name came from.

I will say though, I don't like the 2DS compared to a 3DS or even a DS vanilla simply because it doesn't fold. It's so chunky and ugly looking and I have no idea what Nintendo was thinking.

@@avreyunroe7668 Did you watch the video? Homebrew is just user developed (ie "home-brewed) software. If you follow the instructions in the video you can run that software, which will allow you to do things with your 2DS/3DS that Nintendo doesn't necessarily want you to do. So to answer your question, yes, you technically could install those games free of charge (although that's piracy and technically illegal). But you can also do a lot more than that.

@@azurekite3870 I haven't had any issues with that. It's played every 3DS game I've thrown at it. The only real downside to it is it can't play SNES games. For a console that I've barely used before though, I can't complain

@@volvo09 the 2ds and 3ds play the same games, the “New” 2ds/3ds has a more powerful processor and there are a few exclusive games to the “New” variant of the 3ds line. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is one example of games exclusive to the “New” models, but it’s a pretty limited list.

True, I did the old method of CFW like 3-4 years ago, probably 2017-2018. I did the CFW process 3 separate times, since i was CFW my friends 3ds as well, and it would take me like the entire day after school. This was the free method when it was still around until it wasn't for a couple of years. Then I did CFW again on my little brothers new 2DS recently, and litterally only took me an hour to accomplish. CFW has come a long way.

Not sure if it was the first method, but I remember having to use a modified save file of Ocarina Of Time 3D when I hacked my launch model Aqua Blue. And installing games was a total pain. A couple of years later the freEshop was the best piece of piracy ever coded.

What's the point in having a bunch of games you're never going to play? Just to say you have them? Even with homebrew, I stick to what I'm interested in. I don't need a library of 2,000 games when I'm probably only going to play a few dozen of them.

@@qactustick Fair enough point, but by that logic, what's the point of libraries? Not all the books will be read, or continuing to make movies and shows? We have enough already there's no way to watch them all. Luckily, I have a house full of gamers ranging from 4 to 42 and we've got probably well over 7k games across systems from NES to PS5 and Series X. It helps to always have something to play, and fun finding games you'd never thought to try otherwise.

With other media, you don't really have individual people striving to maintain personal collections of literally everything that's produced, or at least it doesn't seem as prevalent as it is with video games. I don't want to own everything...just stuff that I'm interested in playing (and will hopefully have fun playing). Maybe it's unusual to treat a 'free' ROM collection as though each game was purchased individually, but that's really how I do it! If I'm not gonna play it, I won't buy it...or download it, as the case may be. My entire collection is my 'greatest hits'!

All the timebomb r4 cards can take this one kernel from a splinter r4 company that uses a wood kernel copy. My 2022 gold r4 card doesn't have the timebomb and even let's me install custom themes on it. I found a windows xp theme for my r4 card lmao.

@gsshunter the r4i gold card often comes with a "timebomb" inside the kernel which will lock the r4 from doing anything when it reads a far enough date on the console. If you bought an r4 and it bombs, you can just set the date on your 3ds back a few years and it will work again.

I find r4 cards better than twilight personally because any ds can boot up the r4 card immediately. Twilight menu also sometimes has worse game compatibility too. I find my r4 gold being able to boot Gameboy games at proper game speeds more often.

When toys r us was going out of business, I’d go in pretty frequently to see things go more and more on sale. During the last week the were open, they had one small locked cabinet full of electronics stuff like video games, tablets, and galaxy New 3DS XLs. They went downt to 60% off, meaning I got a brand new New 3ds xl for $90.

That is actually with the firmwares on some (often knockoff) cards, and I for one know that my multicast 208-in 1 was actually a acekard+ copy, and I could do the proper firmware, with no risks (also backups backups backups)

some of them, not all a common indicator for "time bombed" carts is that they show up as Bomberman in the menu other carts that show as Spongebob are more likely to not have a time bomb

@@DragoSmash that's why I said "usually" ... I know it's not all of them. usually the ones that specify a year (like 2018 model and so on) are the ones designed to die after a certain date.

@@ferna182 These "timebombs" don't really brick the cards. You can literally bypass it by setting the date back to before the date the card stops working.

@@Melonposting At the bare minumum, yes, but with the base 32GB insternal storage you don't have any space for much, so you need an external HDD with it's own power supply, which isn't a little thing. You also require the gamepad to use homebrew channel, so if you have the pro controller, that's an extra controller to have around. And the gamepad's battery is prone to die, so that doesn't help. So yeah, maybe it's not "tons of accessories", but the ones you need are pretty big space wasters. I think the Wii U is amazing for homebrew, don't get me wrong, but aside from what I said, I also had many problems trying to install stuff, so I didn't have the best of the experiences with it. I prefer to have the Wii U just for Wii U stuff and use the Wii for other homebrew stuff, I had more luck with that one. Edit: I forgot. This isn't an accessory, but it's a pain, and that's having to boot haxchi everytime. Annoying and time consuming.

The Wii homebrew scene is my favorite of all time. I remember my friend and me spending a bunch of money on 4.7GB Verbatim DVD-R for pirated Wii and GC games to play them with Neogamma R9. I was so happy with it but Neogamma was very barebones... Then I discovered Wiiflow and USBLoaderGX along with external HDD playback, boy those were the days.

On the DSLite system just change your system clock to match the year printed on the R4i cart. I bet it's the same when using R4i to play DS games on your 2DS/3DS. And save your money... Silver/Gold/Red R4i are all the same so get the cheapest one you find. Newegg and eBay and Etsy have them.

Install YSMenu.

R4 carts that are more likely to have a time bomb show up as Bomberman in the menu carts that show up as Spongebob in the menu are less likely to have a time bomb

Sadly the hinge is the first thing to break. Even just from using it normally you have it flopping around after a couple of years. A sleeve for the 2ds is probably better than the hinge design

In terms of portability, there's not that much in it. The 3DS is much chunkier compared to the 2DS. Also worst I've seen on 2DS is a few scratches on the top screen that could easily be buffed out (the touch screen is recessed so less prone to the scratching other than over zealous stylus use). Worst I've seen on 3DS though is completely dead top screens and non functioning touch screens due to the hinge accidentally destroying a ribbon cable. I personally prefer my 2DS to my Original 3DS.

@@Martel4 It's a third party solution but very handy indeed. Nintendo should've used USB from the get go but they are so dickish that for example the DS/DS Lite port is practically a mini usb but not quite like they were just trolling at that point and in fact a mini usb fits and can actually charge them (it's a bit of a tight fit so I wouldn't recommend long term)

@@justananimefan1570 It isn't as much of a problem when new units include these proprietary cables/chargers in the box. It becomes a lot more of a problem once they aren't included, which did eventually happen with the New models. I personally feel like it's worse to not include a charger because that's either putting the consumer on the hook for obtaining one separately or assuming that they already have one, which isn't necessarily going to be true.

Unfortunately, Nintendo patched the nice simple browser exploit that worked on 11.14.0. There are still other ways to mod a 2/3DS, but they're not as simple. The guide will probably be updated within a couple of days.
