I've always wanted an expanded Amiga 500 that ran Kickstart 1.3, an internal accelerator, and the ability to boot from a hard disk. Finally I've been able to do it. Check out this video!

Regrettably, I never knew much about the Amiga. Also, you're electronics skills are above mine. However this video was absolutely amazing and also intimidating. It's serious how much work has to be done to attach that enhancement.

Great video. I've been working on the TF boards myself and they're a great design for the price. People should keep in mind that TerribleFire has a whole series of accelerator boards either complete or in progress so be sure to follow him. One thing that's cool is that you can upgrade that TF530 rev 2 board down the road and migrate to a 40-50 MHz 030 and add a 68882 FPU as well. The next revision will have 4MB of RAM and SATA instead of PATA IDE. Given how cheaply you can get pulled M.SATA boards and M.SATA to SATA carrier boards, this could make for a pretty awesome Amiga setup. In the pipeline is an 040 board and ultimately TerribleFire plans to do an 060 board as well. Something you forgot to mention was the relocator board that's necessary to mount the TF530 inside the A500 and still be able to install the keyboard and close the case. You used one in the video, where did you get it?

Was able to do this easily on the Amiga 2000 like the one I had since they offered a few accelerator cards for it. That was the main reason I got rid of the Amiga 500 and upgraded to the Amiga 2000 for expandability. Loved the Amiga line of computers. I thought it was funny back in the days when Pixar was getting mad at Amiga for being able to duplicate there animations on a computer that was just a fraction of the cost of their computers. The Amiga 2000 and 3000 were powerful graphics workstations when equipped with the Video Toaster graphics add on hardware.

I wouldn't have done that soldering to the main board like that. You could have just used a bit of strip board, some header pins and a chip socket to make an adapter.
@brostenen
@brostenen 5 жыл бұрын
Heh... Then he would not have had space for the kickrom. The relocator covers 1/2 of a square millimeter over the top left corner of the kickrom chip. And if you have somethong that raises the chip, then it will be just slightly too high, and the relocator will not fitt. Only way to get around this, is to make an kickrom relocator, using a ribbon cable to socket solution. Or use one single chip like in this video. Or just go and upgrade the kickrom to 2.x with IDE support. The one with the revision 37.350 is a good one. Then get a 1.3 kickrom downgrade floppy. Here I am thinking about the relokock 1.3
@brostenen
@brostenen 5 жыл бұрын
I think the did not want the scandoubler as well, because the cpu relocator will go and obstruct the space from the scandoubler or something.

And excellent video, although I often get worried seeing these How To guides that people without too much technical knowledge will not know enough and may ruin their machine. I would not at all be comfortable flashing the rom chips, and back in the day I just bought a ROM switcher, 1.3 for disk based games, and 2.04 for HDD stuff. I think a real ROM is safer than flashing the roms, and cheaper, and as a bonus you get KS 2.04. There are purists out there who would argue that hacking the motherboard and changing the rom means you no longer have a stock A500. Back in the day I used a big box A500 side-port expansion (called Bodega Bay) which auto-booted IDE drives but I had SCSI, so I had to boot with the IDE and then use that to boot the SCSI. I also bought a Derringer 030 for £250 which is pretty similar to the new device in the video, and by swapping the clock crystal to a 50mhz one, the board ran at 50mhz without issues for 5 years. I eventually sold all my A500 kit and just bought an A1200.

Man, there is so much great info in it, I don't know where to start. This is a properly PIMPed A500! You put a lot of effort into it and it shows. And you gave so much great info along the way. I learned so much. Thank you! One question, you say the A500 can't boot to a HD with Kickstart 1.3. I had an A590 external HD that plugged into the expansion port and I booted to Workbench 1.3 with Kickstart 1.3 all day every day. Was this some crazy voo-doo magic? I never had to mod my Kickstart ROM or anything of that sort. Also kudos to TerribleFire. That guy is a legend with all he is doing for Amiga!

Thanks Bill ! yeah ive dreamed about having a KS1.3 setup like this for years haha. I love WHDLoad but this is where its at for me as for the A590 - it has its own ROM which handles the booting of the device on KS 1.3. im not sure of the tech ins-and-outs though. I'll definetly keep you in mind if i ditch the ACA500+ but for now im gonna hold onto it a little longer, it still has some really cool features (creating fast CF Images, Action Replay freezer etc) thanks for watching and supporting as always !

This turned into a rather expensive project. I bought an A1200 with a 50mhz 030, IDE and external SCSI with an MMU and a math co-pro for about the same price as this card and the EPROM burner. I bought this many yeaars ago, so maybe it's gone up in price, but still, that's a lot of money for an A500. Then there is the new FPGA based card which gives 060 level performance. I think it's called the Viper or something and it also has modern video abilities so you can use a modern monitor with 16 or 32 bit color.

I always preferred 1.3 myself, mainly for nostalgia reasons but just a shame more software isn't available for 1.3 like it is for 2.0 or above. I definitely understand why this is but still. It looks like you have Lemmings installed on the harddrive there, is that using JST by any chance? Liking your video's too, they are awesome!

Many years ago, I gave my few valued possessions over to safe keeping to go on a brief adventure working in the United States. Now it's beginning to look like a return is in order to reclaim my 5.25" floppies of Borland DOS V3.1 and an original A1000 with Kickstart on disk and 512Mb of memory. Not at all bothered by exploded computer innards but I loved coding on that thing. Any idea if this would work or is there something better given all the bits I'll have to expand?
