Its plastic can still get very brittle tho ... been restoring and selling a bunch of xbox-es and one of them almost fell apart from just looking at it.

I remember being like 10-11 years old trying to cut up a controller cable so I could splice in a USB type-A female so I could plug in a flash drive and load Linux from it. Never got that far 'cause my mom wouldn't let me but those were good times! PSP was eventually my first modded console

Did you upgrade to the good IDE cable? That cut loading times even more, especially when combined with good 7200rpm HDDs with large caches.

Same. Loved modding that thing. Started out with the soft mods with mech assault then went with a modchip and loaded in a bunch of different bios. Also loved the community changing the boot up lava thing to so many other 3d objects. Was so sick.

@@hennygod7893 My mod was like 20 years ago, I'm not the go to guy for that. Plenty of video guides around though.

Microsoft were going to put 128MB Ram,but decided to cut it to 64MB and add the HDD. However there is still an open slot to add another 64MB Ram to give you 128MB and it really does improve game performance. I think it was MVG actually where i watched the video.

I couldn't get the sata ssd I was installing to consistently boot without using an 80 wire, I had the exact same adapter as well. Not sure if it is because it was an ssd, but it booted once every 10 times after installing xbmc4gamers

​@machinerin151 as opposed to what? The xbox is 40 pins. He's saying you are supposed to use an 80 wires, 40 pin cable since the higher udma modes the adapter uses will be more suseptible to noise. It will work one minute, then not boot the next. It is pretty much mandatory, idk why it was skipped. Probably did change it but just left out of the video

@@Hadzz95 80 wires means a ground for all 40 live wires. That type of cable mainly reduces crosstalk. It can be used with a stock system to stand in for a bad cable, but to little potential benefit.

From what I remember back in the day, the "80 wire" drives would still work with an old cable, just at a slower speed. Isn't that the case?

@Code7Unltd yes I know, that's why I called it 40 pin 80 wire. Obviously its not necessary for stock drives, but it basically is necessary for these startech sata adapters. Half the time it won't boot without an 80 wire cable, stock bios or otherwise

It was soo good for it's time. Great media controls with a controller. And the cool milkdrop visualisations. So much fun.

@@DuneRunnerEnterprises If you live in the USA, then grab an X-Out. For me it wasn't an option, since I don't live there. So, I built myself an adapter. However, many people don't have the know-how or the hardware available to build themselves one, so online retail services are the way to go. There are cheaper solutions if you search for them.

Would like to mention newer Aladdin's tend to not be able to flash new bios', but Cerbios can still work on it using its BFM installer.

For someone living in the US, x-out is a good option, but for a cheaper solution, there are options if you care to look for them over the internet (i won't name any places, because I don't want my comment erased again).

Fwiw I don't think the fresh paste gives a lot in most cases. I did it anyway on my old 1.6 I fixed up a couple years ago and the paste was gnarly looking but it wasn't in danger of not doing its job any time soon. Maybe others have had a different experience ofc

​@@deepspace6nineit's more of one of those "while you're doing all of this other stuff you may as well" things. I've done it on most of mine. The GPU used thermal cement and I'd suggest not trying to remove this unless you're confident.

Favourite brands are either a hangover from the days when it mattered, or are evidence of personal bias resulting from a few bad experiences. Like people who have two cars from brand X go wrong, and conclude that brand X is rubbish - it's just not meaningful data. The real death factors are vibrations (in particular how they transmit or don't transmit between drives in one rack/case), mounts and power cycles. Source: I have personally retired and scrapped literally thousands of hard drives, there were no overall standouts in brand, model or even RPM (other than those studid 10,000rpm things - I never found 7200 to be less reliable than 5400 on a domestic level). Fun bonus fact: my most unlikely survivor drive is an early 500GB 3.5" 7,200 Deskstar that I pulled out of a customer's old machine, it had over 58,000 power cycles. Not hours - power cycles. It still works fine. I have no idea how.

Yep, lost 3tb of flac music built up over 15 years due to a failed barracuda only 3 years old. My western digital green from 2006 still works.

Not sure about mvg, but even then I noticed what a royal pain in the ass it was to source 80 wire cables, let alone any long enough to function in an xbox. Doesnt help that the xbox is keyed upside down compared to every pc ever. So you pretty much NEED the maximum of 36 inches to reach everything feasibly. Thus, availability feels like it already dried up by 2013.
