tbh, I took multiple Master Classes as a gift from an estranged rich family member, or I would have never had the ability to afford it. that said, I took the following and genuinely adored them: -Frank Gehry (Architecture) -R.L. Stine (Middle Grade Horror Fiction writing) [this was life-changing, included an actual Q&A livestream with just him and the twenty or so students in the class that week. it felt like being in his office talking about writing with him!!] -Aaron Sorkin (screenwriting) I learned a LOT. @sparks6177
@sparks6177 14 күн бұрын
@@Lacewisethat’s true but practical skills are also hard to market these days. Either they are so specialized that almost nobody will pay to learn them or the skill has already been taught much better in a KZfaq video. Business skills especially can be hard to teach because there’s no roadmap that says do this and succeed. And well masterclass seems to have a problem saying that it will be more like learn these skills, then work really hard, hope to get lucky and eventually you’ll be moderately wealthy. But you don’t need mark cuban to teach you that, any small business owner can teach that but they aren’t big names that draw attention. So mark cuban is relegated to teaching his extremely personalized journey to success that was 90% luck and 10% skill, and that’s not a dig against mark cuban, he probably would have been wealthy regardless but making a million dollars for owning a small up and coming tech startup is like winning the lottery 3 times in a row sort of luck.
@Lacewise
@Lacewise 14 күн бұрын
@@sparks6177 I don’t think the second part is true. A lot of KZfaq videos teaching practical skills are terrible. Sometimes because the KZfaqr is new to teaching, but more often because they don’t expect their audience to rely on KZfaq videos to learn a skill. A lot of them also, relatedly, either assume you have background knowledge or that you can figure out the how to put the essential knowledge together with advanced beginner knowledge. (Skipping over “novice”territory altogether.) This quickly bumps into “trade secrets” by which I mean, things that professionals won’t tell you unless you’re in training (or, in the modern era, are reading a book or paying for a class). You _can_ still find a lot of that stuff if you’re willing to look through hundreds of hours of material and three different mediums. But not all of it. And that adds a significant amount of time to learning. Paid services like Masterclass are meant to sort through that for you and bring a lot of those tips (that have dissipated over many year) and Masterclass specifically takes it up a notch by specifically recruiting people who are famously successful in their field and all of whom have public speaking/workshop/training employees credentials.

And even then, I'd struggle to find any mainstream skill that can't be 'mastered' (at least to the skill level you'd get from Master Class) for free from other sources. Seriously, the resources for animation, coding, music production, etc, that are available on youtube alone are insane. I can decide I want to learn some video editing for a project, and stumble on a video showing how to almost flawlessly recreate special effects from the latest Marvel movie and it's completely free.
@Lacewise
@Lacewise 14 күн бұрын

I think ultimately even if they weren't trying to make a scam website. Masterclass is something that inevitably becomes a scam because most celebrities don't know how to teach, they don't have the motivation to sit down for a long time and actually consider how stuff should be taught so the result is kind of haphazard and incomplete. And because its celebrities it's expensive for what it is. Like with someone like Gordon Ramsay, sure he's a good cook, but you could probably learn more from an experienced cooking teacher or even as KZfaq has proven, a competent home cook. We don't even need to speculate about this, Gordon Ramsay posts to KZfaq and yet there are so many better KZfaq channels for learning how to cook than his
@jeffseidl

Someone bought be a membership as a gift for a year- this is exactly what I found as well. The Gordon Ramsey class was good- but nothing you can’t learn for free here or in a cookbook. Just doesn’t seem worth the cost when so much cooking tutorials and guides are available elsewhere.

One, I did not expect to get a Muppets song stuck in my head - I'm not mad about it. Two, I lost it at James saying, "oh, you really don't have to do that" upon you saying you'd try another song. Truly a best friend. I hope Usher taught you the power of friendship. I know Kermit did.

I like the section with Dax. You fully nailed the vibe of a masterclass. A masterclass is like a lesson but with a very advanced teacher. The only way for a masterclass to work is if the teacher is fully engrossed in the students improvement.

Dax is a sweetheart man! You can tell, he’s overcome alot of anxiety. I feel like younger me would have been harsh/judgmental to that type of persona, and I’m glad I’ve overcome that inclination, but I still don’t understand fully where it comes/came from, some type of insecurity I’m sure. But Dax’s wholesome vibes are life!

Pinely, I think you’ve got some real potential for singing! I’m being 100% genuine. I don’t think telling people to try copying someone / a group that’s like top tier, well, I’m not sure that’s the best way to find your voice and learn the basics of singing and breathwork! You’ve a lovely voice and I want to hear it singing free 🤩

First: The fact this took a month is so impressive!! Admire the work you took into making and editing this! Second: Dax Flame was my favorite segment! You can really see the improvement around 30:00. I was definitely giggling and kicking my feet lol. Lastly, being out of your comfort zone about singing is so real to see. I’ll scream my broken cords in my car alone 😂 I’d love to do karaoke tho. Rip to whoever hears me 😭

it's actually more complicated than that, it's called a semi occluded vocal tract exercise (aka SOVT) and helps with a LOT of stuff by basically being a way to warm up the same processes with less air and intensity than full on singing requires

The music part was interesting, it seemed like Usher was actually trying but there's only so much he can do without actually interacting with a student. You have a very sweet voice and you probably could do well if you pursued in-person lessons. Also The Rainbow Connection is hard that song requires a really relaxed tone over a wide range

Somehow the thing that threw me off the most was bush claiming putin had a Russian dog? It confused me so much that I had to look it up and found out that 1 I was right. Putin has never owned a russian breed and 2 that there’s an actual Wikipedia page listing all of his dogs and idk how to feel about that
