I dunno, what does that say about the rear camera? It sucks, probably? IMO it's the big letdown in all Linux phones, as well as degoogled Android: the camera software is always terrible, no matter if the sensor and lens are maybe okay. You can't take a decent pic with these things.

I think it is the exact same battery as the standard Pine Phone. I wouldn’t count on better battery, as it is essentially a Samsung J-series battery they are using. With regards to the SOC, I truly hope that it performs well. It is a very similar chip to the Pinebook, albeit in a much more restricted thermal design. That being said, I don’t think it will match the performance of the Snapdragon 855+ in the OnePlus 7T. That was Qualcomm’s flagship SOC of 2 years ago. OnePlus’s thing used to be to use flagship components and sell it at a mid-ranger price point. Sadly, not anymore, as the company has lost its uniqueness in its continuing morph into its bigger brother Oppo - but I digress.

To be successful in market, you have to think from the perspective of Level 0 Noob. It must be highly intuitive. Easy to use. Even a kid should be able to do it, literally. It must be reliable, ie, not glitch. And the system must be stable. Shouldn't be slow. Developer community and products should be available for it. Common users want to play games, easily surf internet, easily watch video and listen to music, easily install small shitty apps or softwares even if they do practically nothing. Let the background be in background. There is reason it is background. Have the possibility to commercialize. Closed source softwares may not be liked by some people, but it is what drives big corporations to make stuffs. If they can't make bucks out of it, why would they give any fucks to it ?

Actually Linux is used more in Corpo environment (development, server infrastructures, etc) The issue of Linux is that it isn't user friendly. And no, telling someone to copy and paste console commands hoping such doesn't break your system isn't user friendlyness. I love Linux, but I believe instead of having millions of distros and software package distributions, a unified system would make more sense. Because for example, I don't use Fedora because the install packages are RPM, and most of the current software manufacturers that support Linux they use deb installer packages. Well, they have both the same kernel, so why Fedora and Ubuntu feel so different when it comes to being their own OS?
@nikkehtine
@nikkehtine 2 жыл бұрын
@@sharkuel You're overly generalizing linux like it's some single alternative operating system like Windows and not a set of kernel and system tools with an entire ecosystem of software, both user-facing and the system layer hidden away from the regular desktop usage. You don't need to copy paste some commands from the internet or even touch the terminal at all to use desktop Linux nowadays. User experience is going to vary based on what OS you install and which desktop environment you use. A Fedora Gnome desktop is going to be waaaay easier to use than a Gentoo installation with bspwm and a custom selection of software that you compile from source.
@sharkuel
@sharkuel 2 жыл бұрын
@@nikkehtine and you basically replied to you own question. That's the main problem, it is a set of kernel and system tools and environments. And that, for the "normie users" is enough to keep them away. Now am I generalizimg? Not at all. This is the way people view Linux and if I was a newly fresh guy to start my Linux journey I would be discouraged to continue. Because most of the people want an OS where they can do everything with ease, and not having the trouble to manage console commands and search forums to find their WiFi driver, for example. This for the normal end user is just not okay, and for small and medium businesses as well. And that's why Windows is mostly the industry standard. It is not that they are pushing some form of monopoly, but the ease of how normal users can do things under basically the very same environment all around (basically they change to another PC, windows still feels familiar), and that's something that simply doesn't happen with Linux. In one PC it could have one distro, and then you change jobs and you need to use another distro with a different environment. Aditionally, the "it will get better" promise that looms in the horizon. For years Linux users have been preaching such, it is 2022 and Linux is still miles behind both Windows and MacOS when it comes to accessibility. And this is what "normie users" want, ease of use, and leave the console commands to their Admins/IT guys.

i believe that the widespread adoption of mobile linux is lacking builds for existing smartphones. Like iirc postmarketOS only supports a handful of devices that were made as android phones. It's like the hardware for Linux on the desktop. Sure, you can buy a pinebook pro or whatever, but most people get a device with windows pre-installed/used without an OS, and install Linux on that. Although it's cool to see PinePhone evolve, mobile linux should be improved on booting it from phones that came with android pre-installed.

Folks why don't we build a linux distro/gui on top of the base android kernel. A fully open OS? Why reinvent the wheel when it's already here. Look at Huawei what they're doing with Harmony OS.

I think its absolutely impossible for the Pinephone Pro to run anywhere close to the level of Oneplus 7T. I think Snapdragon 855+ is many times more powerful than RK3399S if RK3399S actually is RK3399 with lower TDP.

If you just use it for calls and SMS, why you want to buy a "smart" phone in the first place? I don't mind frickling and tweeking a long time to get the best experience for me, but without proper hardware acceleration and also little battery and a bad camera (its 13 instead of 5 MP, but still a miserable sensor plus terrible software) I can't do anything to improve that to a level I would accept it as my daily driver.

You can still do a quick google search or check wikipedia on it. Don't know about whatsapp/telegram if they can be used in non-browser mode. Anyway, there are some uses. Also, even if the camera is pretty shitty, it's still better than nothing. Maybe you simply want to make a photo of some flyer or something, where you only really need some information, nothing fancy.

It seems to me, that this is more just for the sake of novelty and that by the time they have modified the distro of Linux its running enough to get full functionality and stripped away all the non/relevant/unnecessary features and modded the kernel suitably...........youd may as well use Android as thats pretty much what android is, a modified Linux Kernel running on specially designed ' distro ' for phones.

really like the concept but its just too expensive for a low range chipset. I do believe the LG G5 H820 from 2016 is a much better deal imo. Its costs only $80 USD, its smaller, has SD820 Chipset, 4gb Ram, a headphone jack, a microSD Card slot, removable battery (upgradable up-to 5700mah for $15 via Aliexpress). Hope this helps

This project should have been released as a 10 or 12 inch LTE linux pen tablet, maybe it would be released as a phone later on. I think it is a useless device as a phone, but if it was a cheap lte linux pen tablet, it could be very useful for business and education.

Whole point of the Pine phone was security so if you add all these computer funtionalities to the Pinephone you're defeating it's original purpose. So if you want a mini computer on a phone than no the Pinephone isn't for you if you just want a secure phone then the idea of that Pinephone is just right!

You criticize the hardware but have no thoughts on software efficiency. Softwares are getting more and more useless as they are expanding in gigantic size without adding any functions. The route of current "software development" is a dead end as there is no requirement to software efficiency, only bloat and gigantic size. A software development must include using hardware efficiently.

I'm fighting with Pinephone over my Linux phone that was never delivered and I've escalated it to PayPal for resolution. I rarely buy with PayPal because they've decided against me on shipping before. The company claims I gave an incomplete address but the real problem is they didn't tell me what carrier they're using beforehand so I know which address to use. They're also claiming the phone will be destroyed or abandoned. It's a Hong Kong company and I'm calling them on that lie. I have a similar problem with Amazon deliveries but they've always made it right. I've been bitten a lot by Chinese companies but expected this company to be different based on reputation. I don't plan to be fooled again.
