Hi. This is the first time I've built a pinewood derby car and well 25 years. I appreciate your videos they really helped me get my son's car to a nice position. I don't want to give him everything and every tip being that he is a tiger cub and this is the first time he's been in the pinewood Derby. Part of my desire is that he learns to build this on his own, but being his first year I want to make sure he doesn't lose every race as well. So we'll be taking some of your tips and including them and also letting him be creative and learn how to use the tools safely. Thanks again man I really appreciate it. I look forward to more of your videos.

Thanks for the comment and it sounds like you have the right mindset to do well just remember wait placement has more to do with it than most other things but every little thing helps good luck hope it goes well

Great videos, my rules say I have to use the pre cut axle slots. I've had trouble in the past with too much wobble by placing the weight behind the rear axle. Where should I be placing the weight?
@tateabdon1
@tateabdon1 5 жыл бұрын
Tee Bull do you want to balance the weight so that the actual balance point of the car is 1 in in front of the back axles but if possible I always like to start with two ounces of weight behind the back axles and then move the rest of the way forward until I get to that one two three quarters of an inch in front of the back axles if you put all the weight in the back it will unbalanced the car and cause it to wiggle as it goes down watch a video on tuning a car I also recommend using a three-wheel car railrider and steer about 2in of steer into the center of the track
@teebull9552
@teebull9552 5 жыл бұрын
The rules only allow for all 4 wheels touching. Also, there's no center rail. Which I think is also contributing to the wobble. How should I adjust to the 4 wheels and the no center rail?

Excellent stuff!! Question if I have a car with balsa fenders, could I try 5/8ths? I have no way of testing it. it is not a "Ladder Car", is about 27 grams. without wheels.

If you wanted to build a spare car that would be fine I try not to go that harsh unless I know that the car can handle it and usually it is the super lightweight cards I can but it is always a risk I've had cars to do really well and I've had cars that don't do as well where are the three quarter tends to be a little bit more reliable

Hey great vid man. This is our first year doing this, so I’m just learning. Do you ever set your cars up to do rail riding? I saw a couple vids about doing that. I actually set our car up to ride on only three wheels and to camber the wheels a bit to make it rail ride. I watched a vid that showed cars running in slow motion and they tend to bounce back and fourth on the track. It’s not really something the eye can see on its own.

Please go on my channel and look at the other videos I have all the other speed tips at use and one of them is running on three wheels and rail and how I set it up it's well worth watching all the videos it's all my tricks of how I've won multiple multiple races

@@tateabdon1 I definitely will check them out before our big race on Friday. But real quick question.. I’m not sure what I did wrong but I made our car purposely ride on 3 wheels but somehow the right wheel ended up being the one not touching, for some reason. Does it matter if the left or right wheel is the one that doesn’t touch the track? I’m really stressing about this. I noticed my son was playing with the car over the weekend and after he was playing with it is when I deepened the axel groove on the left front wheel. So i don’t know if something happened when he was playing with it or not. Anyways, if you could answer that for me I’d really appreciate your advice.

Hi. I have a question on your ladder type car. Me and my son build a ladder style car for this years race. Do you recommend covering the holes on both sides to reduce drag? Or just the bottom? I was think with holes in the center and front of the car, it would reduce the high and low pressure surface area of the car. In return, reducing drag. I was curious about your thoughts.
@tateabdon1

Aerodynamics are very little part of the race do what you can I feel that weight is a much more important I've never seen anyone and I've never put any of the plastic on the bottom a cover up the bottom of the car just the top saying that doesn't mean it's not worth a test few have the time
@TheBabydaddy1973
@TheBabydaddy1973 2 жыл бұрын
And final question.. are you recommending different COG for ladder vs stout car because you can balance the load between wheels better on a ladder car? Cause i dont have a ladder car but my wheels have the same weight load and a rail rider and thinking of trying 5/8.
@tateabdon1
@tateabdon1 2 жыл бұрын
As long as you have a steerable car a 5/8 is not impossible just remember to run the car a few times and make sure there's not wobbling happening if so you can always steer the car a little farther into the center rail but it is always a gamble three quarters tends to work really really well across the board as you get lighter and lighter to a point of where it doesn't affect it as much that's when I start getting into the 5/8 area

It looks like your weights favor one side in the back. Is that to help keep the one front wheel off the ground as it looks like it favors the opposite side? I am asking especially since you mention keeping the weight even across the rear wheels but it doesn't seem like it would be with your design.
@tateabdon1
@tateabdon1 4 жыл бұрын
You're bouncing to wait between each wheel this allows equal friction on both back wheels to achieve this you must add weight to one side of the car being on the side that touches the track in front it also gives you the benefits of keeping the car down on the driving wheel this is why we used the scales to balance the wheels on the back hope this helps
@alaroche00
@alaroche00 4 жыл бұрын
@@tateabdon1 when you say balance the weight between the rear wheels it sounds to me like the weight would be even on both but that seems impossible if you are placing the weight to one side of the car doesnt it?
@tateabdon1
@tateabdon1 4 жыл бұрын
@@alaroche00 it's kind of an interesting phenomenon but if you balance them properly with two scales that can do Graham wait you will see that balancing the two back wheels always will bounce heavy to one side I either wheel which is touching the ground

Hi, I have a Grand prix design car this year. This makes a very slim car. What type of weights will be the best fit for that design?
@tateabdon1
@tateabdon1 8 ай бұрын
I would still go with the tungsten carbide cubes and then you can also buy tungsten carbide little disks if you can't get those to fit

How are you adhering the weights to the car? Also, I've seen videos that suggest the optimum placement of the weight is 1" in front of the rear axle. Have you tried this? Our race rules says we have to run all 4 wheels on the ground. Would you suggest bending the rear axles and keeping the fronts completely straight? Or, should we canter the fronts as well? Thanks for all the vids!
@tateabdon1
@tateabdon1 5 жыл бұрын
I use CA glue to adhere them to the bottom of the car which seems to work perfect and then on the extra that I add when I get to the race I just use the aluminum foil duct tape that you can get at Home Depot

When I do a four wheel car I just do a 3-wheel car and I bend the non-dominant wheel usually the left wheel down and keep rotating until it hits the ground just enough to pass inspection it is still touching still legal but not actually doing any of the driving of the car
@dafontenot
@dafontenot 5 жыл бұрын
@@tateabdon1 So, you're saying that all four wheels are at a canter, the rear at a negative camber and the front right with a positive camber and the front left at a positive camber, but barely touching?
@tateabdon1
@tateabdon1 5 жыл бұрын
dafontenot yes the non-dominant wheel just enough I rotate it until it's just touching so as if I push it over the table I can see it spin just slightly and I leave everything else the same so it's still a three-wheel car steering properly with all the way in the back but the fourth wheel just barely touches so it passes inspection

You can also ask and make sure if they have rules like the wheel must spend at least one time every foot or something like that they have all kinds of funky rules like that and that might help you know what to do

What is considered a good time for a non-cheater car? 3-Wheels. Stock axles polish & canted. Stock wheels dresses and polished. Rail rider. I hear different things. Found one site where a guy was saying that 2.6s is a middle of the pack car. My pack had never seen a time under 3.7 until my son's car did 3.663 last weekend. It won both Den & Pack. Is that slow?

because every track is different it is very hard to say what is a good time I usually ask the person that is running the track with the best time for their track is and you should be very close to that if you follow all the rules

dafontenot it is the same vinyl you put on signs and that's where I get it I get the scraps from sign shops so the higher-end stuff seems to work really well and you just heat it up with a hairdryer after you're done to straighten it out works really well and it's free

On purpose it is basically like dipping your axles in oil wiping off and then adding graphite it does work if your rules allow it though
