Pinhead laughed in hellbound but only because of Kirsty’s lack of Knowledge of hell. With this pinhead it’s almost like Amy Schumer could make a joke and he would laugh. Pinhead laughing should be very very rare occasion and it should be for a serious reason.

Everything about this movie feels very Studio, very sanitized. I remember seeing this movie at the video store when I was about 7 or 8 and was still terrified of being anywhere near a horror movie. In hindsight, I probably would've enjoyed this movie, even if I had to look away a few times. It feels more like a fantasy adventure than a horror film

@@axebomber2108 True, but in the first films he said less but it was more impactful. From the third onwards he just talked and talked, acting more like some fantasy genie while in the pillar (offering the world when you knew he was just going to screw the victim over in whatever they asked for), and then proclaiming things like he was some dark ruler, despite that we know from the second movie that he's just a figurehead to those really in charge.

I didn't mind him being in the pillar since that was his predicament at the end of the second movie, but they could have come up with something better for him than mass murder. It's a little to on the nose, while being a toned down version of the concepts Clive Barker based his idea on. The real inspiration for all this has a foot planted in Georges Bataille's works, a philosopher Barker read, who talks a lot about the insepperable relationship between violence, death, and crime on the one side, and sex, and desire on the other. I prefer the simpler quote from 2: "It is not hands that call us, it is desire" The cenobites aren't really part of the unknown, they are us when we embrace the unknown, and they have come to teach us how if we are willing to seek them out.

This is shite: his human side wasn't what was keeping him balanced as a Cenobite: if anything all this vengeful cackling and mass-murder is far more human than his otherworldly role as an austere priest of sensory excess.
@steerpike665 жыл бұрын
This is bullshit The Cenobites are not under restraint: their Order is entirely self-imposed. they are not 'under hell's control' or any of that crap. The sadism they practice is their idea of joy and pleasure: they are devoted to it; nothing else interests them: that's what makes it creepy: they're NOT evil and they're NOT demons. And there is no indication they were EVER human. All this was banal crap made up for the sequels. They are just amoral extra-dimensional sensualists whose idea of what's fun is so alien to humans that it SEEMS evil and terrifying. A hedonism so extreme it's indistinguishable from pain. All this got tossed out in the movie so Pinhead could be the next Freddy Krueger and laugh his stupid gravelly laugh. This whole concept went to shit in Hellbound when they stuck that egg-beater in Channard's head, and nobody even noticed.
@steerpike665 жыл бұрын
Because they are a strict, albeit alien order of religious maniacs whose worship is the spirit-as-flesh. This is all very much in line with Clive Barker's ideas about anti-metaphysics, and the non-existence of any division between body and spirit. That's why violence and flesh in his work always has a spiritual element: the Cenobites are the darkest side of that. They are lawful hedonists drawn to the absolute logical conclusion, which to human beings looks like the most horrible sadists imaginable. That's why the box is their ritual not their commander: their contract, by opening the box you are signing a pact to participate in their rites. In the books, it takes days to open, and you never, ever do it by accident. This is all far more complicated and interesting than bloodthirsty demons tormenting and killing the unrighteous for their lust. Which is just crude medievalism, not advanced or alien at all.
@steerpike665 жыл бұрын
Yeah but it's nice when the adaptation maintains SOMETHING from the book and isn't just vastly inferior and very different. And there's no surprises at all when the plot is a bunch of literally centuries-old ideas that every one has seen a million times. Everything cool and advanced about the Cenobites is in their make-up and design, which made them famous. But their philosophy was dumped almost immediately and that's why the films became trash so fast. Really, the sequel to Hellraiser should have been Weaveworld but the money for fantasy wasn't there in 1990. Bottom line: Barker is a fantasy/ sci-fi writer: the horror was a cosmetic addiction, a side effect of the extra-dimensional exploration. With the sudden resurgence of interest in Neil Gaiman, maybe Clive will experience a renaissance and some of his actual ideas will make it on screen with talent and a proper budget.
@hectorsaez33153 жыл бұрын
@@steerpike66 no, i recomend you the comics with direct clive barker ideas, there explain all. They really are demons who serve leviathan, and the mayority was humans, but some have pure cenobite blood, and pinhead is the high priest of them, leviathan is a ancient devil of order before nature, all nature was created against leviathan who just want order, all that can be seeing in all puzzles, labyrinth and other thinks like that who simbolice his power ( leviathan manifested in humans between mathematics and dreams with messages of labyrinth and puzzles) . The nature is chaos and existence is pure chaos, because of that leviathan and the cenobites dont like the flesh, they hate it becasuse is against leviathan, and thats because they want to discipline and punish flesh, is the act of discipline and punish the flesh what is pleasure for them, not the flesh itelf. They are enemies of other form of human demons: the nightbreeds, who serve baphomet (god of nature) other creation of the clive barker mind and they are funny and goofy, the entire opposite of cenobites who are evil and serious.
