Pinion Seal for Dana 35: amzn.to/2wBxuO8
This is the short cut method to replace a pinion seal on a 1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ. The rear axle is a Dana 35. This 'short cut' method does not replace the crush sleeve and I use the same pinion nut. The repair manual recommends replacing the pinion nut and going through the torquing process. Reusing the pinion nut in this process is done by many backyard mechanics, but you have to weigh the risk and reward of using a 'short cut' method. Good luck. Please comment below. I am not a certified mechanic, just a hobbyist hoping to help others out with my videos. This video in particular was a huge pain to edit for some reason. Video editing software was giving me issues. hahaha, but got it figured out, so... enjoy!!

In the middle of this job on my 96 ZJ. My drive shaft was very difficult to get free from the yoke. I had to use PB Blaster, tap it a few times with a dead blow hammer and then pry on it with a screwdriver from the backside. Thought I broke my screwdriver but it was the driveshaft coming off the yoke. The seal on mine came out a lot easier than it did here. Very little damage. Someone has replaced this seal prior to me. With the amount of force In had to apply to get the nut loose it was much easier with the rear wheels locked in place.

Great video. I had some issues driving the new seal in. It would not go in straight. So I ended up taking a small piece of a 2x4 and used a hole saw to cut out a hole to slip over the pinion shaft. I could then tap the seal in with a hammer and it went in straight.

good and helpful video ! I did it exactly the same way and - after installing the seal - did screw on the pinion nut very easily without applying any torque, just counting down the threads and accordingly to the marks on the pinion, nut and the differential housing. Have seen folks using a lot of torque to screw down the nut - so guess this is totally wrong and will damage your bearing easily - your thoughts ?

option 2 for reassembly - torque pinion to 180 ft lbs, check preload if you have a inch torque wrench it should be between 20 - 40 INCH pounds to rotate the pinion the factory spec on the pinion nut is 180-200 ft lb but the 20-40 inch pounds of rotational torque is what takes precedent... if your like me torque it up until it feels right how the crush sleeve and shims/bearings are sitting is more important than the nut lining back up or the torque wrench clicking pro tip, take a pieve of lumber 2x6 preferably and us a hole saw or large twist drill to bore out a hole for the pinion shaft than use the lumber as a cushion between the hammer and seal, must be something wrong if this jeep is on atleast its 3rd pinion seal

Without using a torque wrench I wonder how soon his pinions started leaking again
@AndrewBrowner
@AndrewBrowner 3 жыл бұрын
@@jerrywhalen2100 the seal couldnt care less if the pinion is out of torque slightly, itd have to be either loose enough to move around or right enough to melt the bearing for the seal to notice, its riding on the same surface regarless of how tight the nut isnt tightening onto the seal its just tightening the bearings together sanding the pinion or just replacing it while doing a regear would be the solution if it keeps eating seals

Pinion seals wear out much quicker when the metal surface they contact is rough and/or grooved. I always make sure that the surface is as smooth as glass before reinstallation. Now, if you actually LIKE replacing pinion seals, then just leave it rough and corroded. :)

What if the driveshaft shop just told you to take the yolk off and bring it in to let them inspect it and did not mention anything about marking the yoke, shaft, and nut alignment or counting the exposed threads on the pinion shaft before removal? When you got home you just looked up the torque specs and cranked the nut back on to 200ft/lbs as indicated. Then you drove 200 miles the next day and noticed a bad pinion seal leak? How do you find out how tight to crank down the nut on the pinion shaft after you replace the seal? Thank you.

Dear jeep solid guy, Um, why the RTV? And is it OK to use a metal hammer and the metal seal? Also, is there a torque spec for the pinion bolt?
@JeepSolid
@JeepSolid 8 жыл бұрын
A little RTV there doesn't hurt anything, and it's just a little extra protection against leaks. Metal hammer worked fine, can use a block of wood if you like, or a seal driver (which is also metal). This is the 'short cut' method. There is a way to 'torque' the pinion nut but it is much more involved. Thanks for watching!

I've heard you need to replace the nut but I noticed you did not do you mind if I ask why?
@JeepSolid
@JeepSolid 8 жыл бұрын
+Exocartonic You're right. This is the quick and easy method used by a lot of enthusiasts. Kind of a 'short cut'. The manual suggests replacing the pinion nut, but in this case you have to go through the torquing procedure which makes it more complicated. You can't just count the threads. So, I guess it depends on what you're comfortable with. If you end up with play in the pinion, you can destroy it. I personally have had no issues with the pinion since this job a year and a half ago. Hope that helps.

This is not the way to set proper pinion pre load.

+Steven fitzgibbon That's true! I want it to be clear to my viewers that this is the 'short cut' method, as I mention in the description. With this method, you don't replace the crush sleeve, thus you can't change pinion pre load. Gotta weigh the risk/reward. Just one method used by some. Thanks for the input.

Dealers do it this way, not saying its right but that is the way they do it. I asked a Ford dealer and they said they do all of theirs like that, even warranty.
