In this video, we're taking a look at the difference between the remix vs. the British 1st pressing vs. the remaster of Pink Floyd's Animals.
If you're a lover of Floyd's Animals and want to know the difference between the various versions of the album, then this video is for you! We'll take a look at the differences between the remix, the British 1st pressing, and the remaster, and see which one is the best version of the album.
Animals is the tenth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 21 January 1977[2] through Harvest and Columbia Records. It was self-produced at Pink Floyd's Britannia Row Studios in London throughout 1976. The album continued the longform compositions that made up their previous works, including Wish You Were Here (1975).
Animals is both a progressive rock album and a concept album, focusing on the social-political conditions of mid-1970s Britain, and was a change from the style of Pink Floyd's work. Tension within the band during production culminated in keyboardist Richard Wright being fired two years later. The album's cover shows an inflatable pig floating between two chimneys of the Battersea Power Station, conceived by the band's bassist and lead songwriter Roger Waters, and was designed by long-time collaborator Storm Thorgerson.
Pink Floyd released no singles from Animals but promoted it through the In the Flesh tour. Waters' agitation with audiences during this tour inspired their next album, The Wall (1979). Animals reached number 2 in the UK and number 3 in the US. It initially received mixed reviews, but received much more favourable reviews in later years and is considered by many as one of the band's best works.
In 1975, Pink Floyd bought a three-storey block of church halls at 35 Britannia Row in Islington, north London. Their deal with Harvest Records' parent company EMI for unlimited studio time in return for a reduced percentage of sales had expired, and they converted the building into a recording studio and storage facility. Its construction took up most of 1975, and in April 1976 the band started work on their tenth studio album, Animals, at the new facility.[3][4]
Animals was engineered by a previous Floyd collaborator, Brian Humphries,[3] and recording took place at Britannia Row from April to December 1976, continuing into early 1977.[5] "Raving and Drooling" and "You've Got to Be Crazy", two songs previously performed live and considered for Wish You Were Here, reappeared as "Sheep" and "Dogs" respectively.[3] They were reworked to fit the new concept, and separated by a Waters-penned composition, "Pigs (Three Different Ones)". The only other new composition, "Pigs On The Wing" (split into two parts to start and end the album), contains references to Waters' private life; his new romantic interest was Carolyne Anne Christie (then still married to Rock Scully, manager of the Grateful Dead).[6] With the exception of "Dogs" (co-written by David Gilmour) the album's five tracks were written by Waters. Gilmour was distracted by the birth of his first child, and contributed little else towards the songwriting of the album. Similarly, neither Mason nor Wright contributed as much as they had on previous albums, and Animals was the first Pink Floyd album not to contain a composer's credit for Wright.[7]
The band had discussed employing another guitarist for future tours, and Snowy White was therefore invited into the studio. When Waters and Mason inadvertently erased one of Gilmour's completed guitar solos, White was asked to record a solo on "Pigs on the Wing". Although his performance was omitted from the vinyl release, it was included on the 8-track cartridge version. White later performed on the Animals tour.[3] Mason recalled that he enjoyed working on Animals more than he had on Wish You Were Here.[8]

The UK first pressing with the really wide 15mm spine has a most wonderful sound. Very airy, beautiful tones to all the voices, and a tight bass that fits in well with the rest of the music....and the soundstage is very wide. It is a very homogeneous sound. It is warm and yummy sounding...chill out, have and have a nice listen alone or with friends. I love this pressing very much. It also sounds really really good played at max volume. The 2018 Remaster is a totally different ball game, as it has undergone a ferocious transformation. This is a party record now...especially side 2. The bass has been brought to the forefront in a big way, and in many spots one can hear stuff we never heard before (drums, pigs, etc). This is well done, and I like it as well as the original UK. It will depend on my mood as to which I will choose to listen to. It is my understanding (hopefully correct) that it is the band that was not happy with the original Animals mix. I think the original UK pressing (pressed by EMI in England) was of better quality. I am not a big fan of Record Industry. When I compared the Knebworth 2LP 45RPM from Record Industry(US release) vs Optimal(UK release) there was a HUGE difference in the sound. The Record Industry pressing sounded like it had a blanket over the speakers...sounded like you were in the nose bleed seats.....as compared to the Optimal pressing that sounded like you were within the first 10 rows. So in the end, I do not choose between one and the other!! Notes: Single LP vs Hardback edition with LP, CD, DVD, BLURAY. The cd was made in Germany. The dvd and bluray were made in Japan. The booklet and the jacket for the single lp were made in the Netherlands. The booklet and the hardback cover for the hardback edition were made in Germany. The colors are Terrible on the Netherlands issue, and are Fantastic on the German issue! The lps from both were Record Industry first pressing version 2...5A/3B. Neither had any defects, although the lp from the hardback edition was quieter. Both lps were perfectly flat. Also, the German booklet is 4 pages longer, and has a slightly different layout.

Hello Mike , thank you for the belated review, it’s still useful because it steers the conversation to the end point of what has transpired in 2022 …you nailed with “cmon why not” …the vinyl resurgence has been driven in great part by the reissue/ remix factor. All of us can recall the lean years of our hobby when the survival of record store dealers, websites, and any other sources were drying up rapidly. Now we have the luxury of discussing and comparing if we chose to , and yes it still a choice. More power and fortune to those who who pursue this resurgence, the great mastering minds , the visionaries, the entrepreneurs and record dealers, writers, youtubers , etc …its a great time to be alive . respect , gratitude and perspective must given to those who never gave up , the Fremmer’s, Harley’s Mofi’s , Chads Etc….without their efforts we would not be in a position to even have such choice , and as it’s becoming consistently obvious, we always have the choice of the originals . Thank you.

Michael, thanks for the comparison video. I've loved Animals since it came out in 1977. The new remix is a fascinating listen and I really enjoy it. I agree that there is a "Wow" factor to it. Having said that, I still love the original and will continue to listen to it without any reservation. Additionally, I also enjoy the 2016 remaster. So, I'm happy to have all three versions! I've seen where some people have said that they will retire their original versions and will probably never listen to them again now that the 2018 remix exists. I think that's a foolish mistake. Animals is the Pink Floyd album I probably have listened to the most over the years so I guess it's my favorite Floyd record if that's how you measure it - taking nothing away from DSOTM, WYWH and The Wall which are also brilliant too. There's a certain brutal rawness to Animals that I've always found appealing - and David Gilmour's guitar playing along with Nick Mason's drums have never been better.

I love this new remix! I'm one of those old farts that have loved this record from when I first heard it in about '77 (a friend at school lent me a copy) - it was so haunting, and that guitar work was unbelievable! I have, many years back now, bought an original 1st pressing (UK), and love it, and a few of the later CD releases/remasters. I bought the CD version of this new remix not knowing what to expect, but being interested, and was blown away by the overall clarity of this version....yes, it's changed in instrument presentation, and vocal reverb reduction at times, but, boy, does it all sound so clean and clear! The original, wonderful as it is, almost sounds a bit murky in comparison; almost as though the master tape deck azimuth was slightly off..!! Every instrument here is crystal clear and clean, sharp, and the vocals likewise! 😊 I love this new remix - shame that the vinyl release is suffering from QC issues.... but the CD issue is excellent! 👍

With the exception of the pressing quality (I have some light scratches at the beginning of side two that fortunately only produce a tiny bit of noise - They are pressed at Record Industry, right?) I am absolutely happy with the remix. Compared to my german first pressing it is a huge difference. They made everything right with the new cover design - It shows the change of the famous subject over all these years, and somehow in the same way the remix has a "modern" sound compared to the original mix. Hope we will also see more remixes from other artists in the future - It's great to have some variety.

Great analysis Michael. My favourite Floyd album. I’ve been one of the lucky ones regarding new remix.Mine plays clean no pops or clicks. 2016 remaster is fantastic a great alternative to an original.I don’t own an Og ,but have heard an original at a friends house several times. An original sounds amazing and out does the remaster for sure. The new remix on the other hand does sound incredible in my opinion. The drums & bass are now so clear and the up front. In certain sections you can clearly here Roger plucking the bass strings. The Remix on the other hand doesn’t have the darkness or the grime and the menacing feel of the original. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s fun to have both an original & remix. I actually think they have tried to clean up Animals to match the previous albums. All the best Michael, this is what it’s all about in the hobby they call record collecting 🙌✊

Thanks for this video, Michael. Your comments about remixes and being on thin ice as a remixer are almost identical to the approach of Steven Wilson, who is known to be hired for many remixes by renowned artists. When I compare remixes by Steven Wilson with the originals, I honestly don't hear any difference. Maybe that's also due to my hearing, which hasn't improved through many concerts over the years. I think the 2018 remix of Animals is great. It is indeed something completely different. That’s why I like it. I now have the fifth version of this album. It is by far my favourite Pink Floyd album.

Agree with you on the comparison 2018 vs Remaster. (I don't have an original UK). I have been through 6 copies of the 2018 remix and they have all been noisy and scratched. In this situation I would like to know the master performed in the studio. Only in this way could I make some statements. But I would like to say a few things: if it was possible to make the 2018 version this way, wouldn't the studio masters be much better than the old versions showed us? How was it possible to make the 2018 version? I don't think it's just sound equalization. I have the 2018 version in flac file, in addition to the dynamics and amplitude of sound, there is one thing that caught my attention: the "sound of" magnetic tape disappeared and I found a greater silence that vinyl does not allow. Therefore, I suspect that the studio master is better than what we knew until today and that the 2018 version allowed us to know. Michael, as I told you once, you should pay attention to the digital versions... if you like sound. Are the old versions smoother? Or are they just flat?

I don't have the original pressing but I have the bernie grundman version you have, and now the 2018 remix. I completely agree with your comments about both of them. I hope I can get an original pressing someday of this great, great record. I am lucky: My copy of the 2018 remix was perfectly clean, with no marks or scuffs. Still, I ran it through my Degritter ultrasonic record cleaner as I do with every new record. It sounds great. In the online vinyl collector forums I participate in, quite a few people have said their copies had problems - they were dirty, or slightly warped, or had excessive surface noise in parts, or other defects. A guy here in the U.S. who owns a record store said on his youtube channel that one out of every three copies he sells have defects. Of course he replaces them, but it is costly for him because many people bought their copies using his website, and he has to pay the shipping costs for the replacements he sends them. The record label reimburses him for the defective copies but not the costs to ship them to customers. So I feel very fortunate that I got a good copy. Thank you for another excellent video! I am a big fan of your channel. I think all of us are. Warmest regards, Ron Kenosha, WI USA

The 2018 Remix versus Original UK (both ripped from vinyl by someone not unfamiliar with this channel) shows a somewhat “apples and oranges” comparison. Both vital, both valid. What surprises me a bit is that the opinion of a remaster and audiophile reissue buyer suddenly changes completely since he discovered the OG's for himself. In many cases the result of the comparisons is quite correct, that the OG's often sound best. But there are some exceptions. IMO that is the case here with Animals. No Pink Floyd OG has such an unspectacular sound as Animals. The remaster has improved that decisively. That's why, for me, the remaster is the winner. A comparison with the remix is forbidden for me, because it is something completely different, tailored to today's listening habits. Crystal clear almost clinical instrument separation, great transparency and pounds of bass. I find it class made, but has not much to do with the original album. My remix copy was totally clean, dead flat vinyl. A release highlight this year.

Enjoyed the video and the balanced assessment. On the question of Remixes, however, your views appear a little contradictory if I look back at the recent Jethro Tull Stand Up comparison. To me there is little point in undertaking a remix exercise unless the objective is to produce an alternative flavour of the artist's original work. The remix invariably has, however, a fundamental advantage in that it uses as its start point what will normally be a set of pristine multi-track studio tapes.

Hey Michael, I am pretty certain that they’re not doing a remix for any other album in the Pink Floyd catalog. The general consensus for why they did a remix for Animals is that it was their first time mixing and mastering away from Abbey Road and they are professionals and therefore it came out so-so. Some people believe that it was mixed and mastered this way intentionally but most believe that it was due to lack of the best resources. Just wanted to share, what are your thoughts on this?

If we don't have input from the band or anyone else that was involved in the original mixing of Animals, then it's all just speculation idnit? BTW, there is a hidden Hi-Res remix of Meddle (Stereo and 5.1) that can be found on the Early Years 1965-1972 Blu Ray box set that they did a while ago. It's on the REVERBER/ATION disc in that set.

So I just received this and I loved it. I have the original, not a first pressing but I know this record like the back of my hand. The remix just makes all of the instrument separation far better. The bass is ridiculously good, and I am noticing Rogers bass playing far more than I did originally. It’s a much tighter sounding production that feels like the wool has been lifted. My only issue I think is the Lord is my shepherd part where the last line, of make the buggers eyes water is buried in the mix. Cover art and packaging are really superb too Now to the bad. I got a crap copy. Side two has very poor surface noise and scratches at the beginning and I can see it plainly on the edge. Some people have said it is the glue on the sleeve this being applied with record in the sleeve which is totally ridiculous but makes sense. Why this didn’t come in a poly sleeve for the price I have no idea. So I have put in a complaint and then listened to the CD. I am so disappointed as I have waited months for this. Ultimately it is a very enjoyable version of this album and I’d say will be my preferred going forward, but the production issues are just a total downer

I like how they brought up the bass guitar, especially Gilmour's stellar work on 'Pigs: Three Different Ones', but I didn't like what I thought was a bloated overemphasis on the bigger toms and kick drum.

So, my copy of the new 2018 remix on vinyl arrived this morning. I don't own an original 1977 version of the album but I do have a 1994 Digital Remaster by Doug Sax and James Guthrie on CD and I also have the Grundman/Guthrie remaster on vinyl from 2016. I have listened to all three of these today. I have to say that the 2016 remaster on vinyl is quite good. A bit flat, maybe, but quite good. The 1994 Digital Remaster on CD sounds better. But the 2018 remix on vinyl is just stunning! It has more depth all around. It's cleaner sounding, with more emphasis in all departments. More energy comes through in the sound. There is one issue... why was this record issued with just a paper inner sleeve? It is a very good quality heavy duty paper, but it is just paper. My new record was infested with small paper particles which caused it to pop and skip. I then cleaned it well and after that it played just fine. But why did they not put the record into a polythene lined inner sleeve. It can't be much more expensive. In this day and age all records should be sold in polythene lined inner sleeves. I store all my records in these poly lined inner sleeves.

Love this album as well and look forward to getting the Original British Press at some point. Agree, remastering that enhances to the artist work is alright and adds an entertainment value The Beatles Revolver Boxset appears will be dramatically enhanced with Technology developed by Peter Jackson. Going to get interesting !

Ya. Seems to be a consistent finding that they are too dirty/noisy. In a perfect world someone at the pressing plant would take ownership of an obvious failing in the quality control end of things. Great job as always Michael.

A wonderful record; I still have a huge heart for DSOTM but Animals is just as good in many ways and I agree the original pressing is superb but to be fair I never bothered to buy a 'better' version so I can't compare. The original pressing is available if one looks hard but there are not so many and then how many of them are in good condition after 45 yrs? Keep up the good work.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a producer or sound engineer, just a musician and a lover of music (and Pink Floyd). I also don't have these records on vynil, but I stream on Tidal which is as good a streaming service gets. The remix sounds more vibrant, like a band playing these songs live, it highlights the individual performancesnces, I can finally hear ALL THE NOTES and appreciate Nick's drumming on this one. It has a problem with loudness, as most modern mixes do, that is pretty apparent when you listen to this and the remaster back to back. Compared to that, the original sounded more claustrophobic, more confined, like a piece of art being presented in a form cut from the individual performers. It has a deeply depressing feel that for many years I felt fit this album too good, it was part of the reason this was my favourite Pink Floyd record, and why this band stood out for me. I don't feel that this remix is better and I don't see me listening to it outside of wanting to point out the differences or really hear each individual note. However, I wouldn't say it was unnecessary as it served this purpose of highlighting the people behind the songs.

Have to say I really enjoy the remix... there are a few minor gripes but over-all I think it is a very good mix. But yeah, I grew up with the original, so it also is well known in my head. Hard to truly pick between them. But will agree, luckily I had no audible damage, but yeah the pressing quality these days is so hit-or-miss. First few records I picked up this year were pretty decent, but yeah far too many this year have had major issues... almost all of them scratched on arrival, and several of them audibly damaged. I was born after the time to buy vinyl when it was the dominate format... but it just feels like this can't be what was the norm back then either...

I don't have a British 1st pressing but I bought mine in the US when the album 1st came out so it's an early US pressing. I got a good copy of the 2018 remix clean and no scratches. Sounds like I was lucky. As I said on another review, the original is excellent. Listening to it, if there weren't a remix I wouldn't feel it needed one. But once I listened to the 2018 remix...WOW! Better in every way to my ears. Clearer, cleaner with lots more detail and without some of the compression I hear in the original. I also bought the SACD and it's almost as good as the vinyl in my opinion. I'll probably save my vinyl and play the SACD most of the time. I'm not surprised that you prefer the original. The remix sounds quite different. You seem to always prefer the original and it begs the question, do you expect the remix to be a better version of the original pressing or a better version of the original performance? I'm not stuck on the sound of the original pressing. I think this remix better represents what Pink Floyd intended to have the album sound like. I'll give my daughter my original and probably never listen to it again. Keep the good quality remixes coming.

Pink Floyd never said that Animals didn't reflect their original vision in 1977 until the past few years. The only reason why they do it is just to stay relevant since they refuse to make new albums, so it's a bit flawed to take everything that they say for granted. Saying that the 2018 remix is significantly more detailed is quite a bit misleading because in most of the songs, many of the instruments are more detailed and thicker in the original. It seems like advocates for the 2018 remix use 'Sheep' as a template to justify the remix being better, without acknowledging that it's just a more generic, less atmospheric sounding version of 'Sheep'. 'Keep the good quality remixes coming', that's respectively quite a bit sad that all that many music enthusiasts can look forward is a revised version of a classic album without some of its charms. I think you're gonna want to at least have one copy of the original.

I agree. Those new remixes, from different bands and titles, are for me a fun approach, but also meanings full, in a way. As long as we also have a remaster issue, to put up against the original. And here i'm guessing were talking country of origin, right? (1. Press). The re-mixes is not for a 1/1 comparison of the "original", no matter which issue u got. Best 🙋🏼‍♂️✌️❤️🇩🇰

Clever analysis. The 2018 remix is a different approach to the original version, so they cannot be compared. No analyst has noticed it. I think something similar will happen with the new Revolver remix. But…A new remix has to have a tangible artistic orientation, it can't be based on a simple matter of marketing.

The Floyd have always prioritized instrument separation, clarity, and interplay. Animals was, for a long time, the outlier of their albums as it did not follow that blue print. This 2018 Remix rectifies that outlier and it now sounds more like Meddle or the band that made Pompeii. The 2018 Remix to me, is the definitive version.

Ok, your commentary got my interest up. I have the remaster and a US terra haute 1977 copy. Cleaned and played both. Not even close , the old T copy blows away the remaster and is WAY more quiet vinyl. The new stuff has poor QC and not near as smooth and dynamic. Thanks

I love both. Animals has always been my favorite PF record. This album, more than any of their others, makes (post Barrett) PF sound like an actual rock band (and not a studio band) to me. However to me, the original mix has always been a little blunted. A little too much of the haze from their earlier records. This new mix better suits what, to me, feels more like a rock record. I think you called it the party or wow mix. That fits with how I think this record is structured. Anyway the great thing is both versions still exist and we can choose to listen to either, happy days!

I also have all three editions of the Animals album, just like you. I also think that the new remix from 2018 sounds good, but very different from the original. The original sounds better to me. To be honest, after 20 minutes of listening to the remix from 2018, I started to get bored and couldn't wait for the album to end. Remix 2018 sounds the same as it looks like, gray and a bit boring. The original is dark, but full of flesh and blood.

Was this new release cut from a digital file? If it was, then that was a significant departure from what the album was originally meant to be. I'm not a big fan of changing things unless the artists themselves approve the changes to create a new version. 😜

Yes, the artists themselves created the remix. So, THIS is what the album was meant to be, not the wet blanket album from 45 years ago. Why would it matter how it is done when now you can hear instruments being played. This is an amazing improvement

@@rodehrhart2264 It's interesting, but I wouldn't necessarily call it an improvement, since that is subjective and dependent on the listener and what they like. I know that Roger Waters was at least involved with this remastering and I imagine David Gilmour was too, so it would be great to have a new remaster they feel is worthy of their artistic goals. We could go around the bush on analogue vs. digital. I'm an analogue guy and can hear the difference. Since I'm a hard core PF fan, I'm going to have to get this remaster and compare it to my original issue copies, especially my first issue UK copy. That'll be worth the price alone. I just hope I can find a copy that's clear of the pops and clicks I'm hearing about. 😎

I was fortunate enough to buy a pretty clean 1st UK pressing about 10+ years ago for about $13 😊 I think it was my very first online vinyl purchase. The US pressings always sounded so dull and lifeless, and in reading I found out how much better the 1st UK pressing was, so I found one. I also have a 1st German pressing, but it isn't as good as the UK. Probably my very first search for a better sounding pressing of an Iconic album. BTW, fully agree about remixing of Iconic albums...

I have a 1979 Canadian pressing of this album which i think sounds great, the slight muddy mix compliments the lyrical content. The 2018 remix sounds simply mind blowing i was in awe when i heard the advanced release track on You Tube. I will be buying the CD or SACD. I don't see myself buying the remix on vinyl since I already have a vinyl copy. Great comparison Michael. Maybe we will see a remix of The Wall, Wish You were Here, Piper at the Gates of Dawn in the future.

Sometimes, when an album is reissued (remixed/remastered/reissued) it comes out converted from being just one vinyl disc into two vinyl discs, without any extra material or music being included in the reissue. I love the sound of and the whole ritual surrounding vinyl. But I find the practice of changing a single disc vinyl album into a double disc album very infuriating because it means that I can’t just put on the album on my record player and just sit back and enjoy it without hopping up and down several times to turn over and change the disc.
