Interesting fact: this was recorded at Abbey Road studios at the same time as the Beatles were recording Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. The band’s would mingle between sets. Appreciate your reaction to this particular song and era of Floyd. Interstellar Overdrive is most definitely the peak of this album.

Great reaction guys! Yes, this was the depths of Floyd psychedelia...largely in part to the 'mad' genius of Syd Barrett (RIP). The Piper at the Gates Of Dawn is a marvelous slice of the 1967 psychedelic era! There are some amazing (and quirky) songs on the album! I HIGHLY recommend Matilda Mother as another track from it. Some songs were definitely more melodic & groovy (Lucifer Sam)...others were just adventures in sonic textures (Interstellar Overdrive)...others were just weird (Pow R. Toc H.)! Check out more of their early Barrett era stuff - it's good, but in a very different way to the Gilmour years. Cheers!

Also, the mono mix of this album blows away the stereo version! The studio equipment was limited to a certain number of tracks so the stereo mix lacks detail. My only issue with Barrett-era Floyd is it was too damn short.😢

For those who know Floyd post-Syd, this can be difficult to get into. I saw this Floyd several times. IIRC their set for the International Love-In Festival at Alexandra Palace, London, July 29, 1967, was one tune "Interstellar Overdrive" (maybe). It was about an hour long (maybe) and was very dark. For that reason it has stuck in my memory all these years.

Not every song I could tell you what the first listen was like. But the first time I heard this was in 1968. My two brothers and I were hauling hay. Lol We were out loading the truck in the field when this song came over the old scratchy AM radio that was in the old flatbed. A local radio station in very rural AZ that played variety, although mostly country music introduced Pink Floyd. And I have been a fan ever since. 🤠🏞️🐂

I really like the live version on the Ummagumma album.....it works well with the compilation that that album is! You mention acid? Story time, if I may: In my young, wild days, a group of friends and I...we called ourselves "The Crew"...we would often take "trips' together.......one of those trips was a hike up to a place on a hill top above the city called "Two Trees" (It was what it sounds like).......we took a portable stereo (boom box) with us and had Pink Floyd's Ummagumma album recorded on to a good cassette tape. We sat just below the two trees and listened to it as we watched the sun slowly fall.....it was perfect, and a cherished memory I will keep for the rest of my life! *I am, by no means, recommending anything....but I am grateful for the experiences I had, and to have survived them. 😉

Couple of things. This album features Syd Barrett on guitar, and there is another version, that is quite different, with David Gilmour on guitar, and it is a live version as well, off the UmmaGumma album. I would love for you to listen to The Gold it's in the.... from the Obscured by Clouds album, as well as Mudmen. The album Obscured by Clouds (1972, the year before Dark Side Of The Moon), was the soundtrack to the movie 'The Valley'. And if you want to watch a guitarist do something you have never seen before, watch Saucerful of Secrets from the Pink Floyd live at Pompeii movie. Interesting thing about that movie, it was shot in a Roman amphitheater that was buried along with Pompeii when Mt Etna (volcano) erupted. When they were shooting, some local kids were allowed to sit in the exit tunnels as long as they did not get on camera. When the director went back 25 years later to shoot the parts for the Director's Cut of the dvds, the government guide that helped him was one of those kids that got to sit up in the tunnels!!! The movie Live in Pompeii, used to play every Friday night at a repertoire theater for $1, and then $2 for a long time. And it was always packed, and there always smoking going on...... My favorite Gilmour solo song is still 'There's No Way Out Of Here'. Haunting guitar. I have seen Pink Floyd twice, and both Gilmour and Rogers solo, and within a month of each other. Oh, and playing guitar for Waters was a fellow named Eric Clapton.....

This album was with Syd Barrett. He was the original singer, guitarist and songwriter. Without Sud there would likely be no future Pink Floyd. While Gilmore led to a more structured style the themes of the Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall albums were essentially about Syd and his descent into madness. Barrett was exceptionally talented. You shoul review his Floyd work of See Emily Play and Arnold Layne and Bike, and Jug Hand Blues. As well as his solo songs of Octopus, Baby Lemonade, Dominos and Opel. Barrett was a compelling figure and writer. Many British musicians Bowie, Bolan and others respected him.

Their second album " a Saucerful of Secrets" saw the introduction of David Gilmore because Syd had become unreliable and unpredictable due to mental issues caused by LSD and other problems. On the first Pink Floyd album in 1967... 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn'... Syd Barrett (vocals & guitar) was the main songwriter and his music was both weird and unpredictable... It was no secret that Barrett was dropping acid around this time and his ideas could be 'out there'... But he could write catchy melodies and play these trippy guitar parts like on 'Astronomy domine'... the song that opened the album. Canadian metallers Voivod recorded a great cover of 'Astronomy domine' in 1989. When Pink Floyd started, one of their first singles was 'Arnold Layne'... and it was a strange song about a deviant who steals women's undergarments from clothing lines in the back of homes... The other members of Floyd and the music industry were impressed w/ his originality... Pink Floyd released a much catchier single - 'See Emily play'... and it made Pink Floyd in the early days. In their club days, Pink Floyd would perform w/ a trippy light show and play music to it... it was a like a soundtrack to a visual experience. That made them a popular attraction in London, but people outside the city didn't get it. Pink Floyd did become a live attraction on tour, but Syd Barrett's mental illness and deteriorating condition made it impossible to perform predictably... An American tour was cut short. It got to a point where Barrett could not remember the arrangements of songs he was writing and would keep changing them during rehearsals. Pink Floyd quietly approached Barrett's friend guitarist David Gilmour about joining the band and learning their songs... work on a new album. For a while in 1968, both Gilmour and Barrett were in Pink Floyd... but once they felt that David Gilmour could play and sing their songs, Pink Floyd decided to carry on without Syd Barrett... The problem was that none of the band members were songwriters, so both Roger Waters (bass) and Rick Wright (keyboards) had to learn how to write songs in the style that Syd Barrett did... However, their early efforts a making 'hit singles' failed miserably... Pink Floyd finished a 2nd album 'A saucerful of secrets' ... and it did have some standout songs like - 'Set the controls for the heart of the Sun' ... 'Let there be more light'. It also had 1 of the last songs that Syd Barrett wrote for Pink Floyd - 'Jugband blues'... and it was a very eerie song because it was Barrett singing that he was not "here" anymore.

Oh, man, you two are >this< close to being right about everything! This was London Underground music, The Pink Floyd being its UFO/Marquee Club house band, performing an all-night, acid-raving soundtrack, with the earliest experimentation in prog rock and light shows and performance art and what-have-ya. No surprise the Floyd of the early Gilmour years worked on...wait for it...film soundtracks. Bullseye! Some (like me) believe part of Syd Barrett's breakdown was being ushered away from his familiar, sweaty, intimate, adult basement clubs into pop superstardom and pantomiming singles for tween girls.
