@Sebastian From 3:55 in the video recording of this section I'm glad to see Rick get a close "cameo" of his magical control of the keys. Some may have thought he was nervous with shaking fingers but his every movement was deliberately that of genius. Add the harmonies with David and we had an exceptional master keyboardist and singer who is/was vastly underrated.

This is why Pink Floyd can't be Pink floyd without Rick Wright. Such an integral part of the band and so under-rated. RIP Rick.

in 1973 I was given as Xmas present "The Dark Side of the Moon" and " Deep Purple "Made in Japan". I was 12. A year later, one of my uncles took me to a theatre to see this live. I was just speechless throughout , my uncle at the end was worried that maybe that "was too much for a kid " (he was 20 years old). I just told him that I do not know what to say, I need it time. After saving for 3 months, I bought all the available PF's discography on music tapes (yes) . That year I bought 3 LP to my uncle, for his birthday. He was shocked, asking why I did spend all those money.... and I told him that I wanted to thank him for having taken me to see this Live at Pompeii at the cinema, that I would never forget. Which, in fact, it is true.

@chicklets4ever512 жыл бұрын
It's not even necessarily that they were total masters of their craft, but that the intimate dialogue of the group creates something alchemical and transcending each part. This is the true harmony of the spheres, the eternal voices for which artists, be they but open to receive them, can become the living vessels. The perfect higher union of the multiple, in such collaborations, cannot last, but it creates the Work, which then takes on its own much longer life. It becomes part of the world.

Richard Wright was the special sauce of Pink Floyd. His choice of keyboard tones and chord voicings were always unique and genius, along with his vocal harmony contributions - without Richard, Pink Floyd would be a far lesser band. Using crude and primitive synths, he found the sounds that even with all today's tech, hold up and remain timeless. He mixed that with traditional organ and piano, to bring out the best of the best, without ever grandstanding. Just, pure taste, tone, musicianship and class.

Pompeii? No way. Not the Pompeii one. Pompeii is great, don’t get me wrong. But for Careful With That Axe, Eugene it’s gotta be the Ummagumma version. That’s the best performance of it. It sounded like some magical fairy wonderland. I crept along the landing and stood quietly outside his door. We had had a falling out so did not want him to catch me. From that moment on age 9 or 10 it has been Floyd above all the others now heading towards the big 60 and nothing’s changed in that respect.

@@briganfree3656 thanks for sharing that story; some of us need to thank our older siblings as well. When my older sister went out I had her turntable to myself for a precious few hours. I am nearing 70 now so The Floyd bug bit me as a young teen, and has (gratefully) not let me go for an instant.

Lori Raf I think that is the test of true genius. I have loved a lot of music in my time. I was a Dylan fan for 15 years then just grew out of it. I still like him but it’s not such a big deal. There have been a few bands and artists that have gone the same way over time but not Floyd. I must have heard this stuff thousands of times and it never gets old. For me it is Gilmour. Like so many others I don’t just listen to him play. I feel every note physically even as well as emotionally. Gilmour’s music is not just heard it is experienced, you live it. Even in the darkest times of grief he is there making beauty out of pain. If you don’t believe me listen to his Red Sky At Night from “On an Island” and also the Gdańsk version. If you have ever known grief it will move you. Young happy people who have never suffered tend not to like it. It saved what was left of my sanity frankly. Musical medicine lol.

Hey Jamel, I dig your intro music to your show. It's like a 1950's sit com music. Ha ha I've been a huge fan of Pink Floyd since I first heard them in the late 60'. You and I are forever bonded because of our love of Pink Floyd. I'm 75 now. Nice to meet you.

They really are musical as well as visual artists in a class of their own. Whatever they do they do it on highest level. It is art. Their live performances are often even better than studio recordings. Only the best can do it. This is difference from majority of today performers.

Dear Jamel, you and a few others have put me back on the Floydtrain again. I listened to them since the mid seventies, when I was where you are now. Along the way to this moment in time there were some distractions. One Kate Bush for instance. But I always come back to Pink Floyd. It never tires me. I travel through time and space when all their beatiful music comes along. It is a treat to hear you express your experience wile learning about what they do and also how and why. Thank you for letting us witness the start of your journey. It's kind of comforting to me.

@@JustMe-vk4fn it's so sad. it's so true. while the pop music of my childhood was chock full of floaters, if one took the time, and was discerning, one could find exactly that which satisfied our inner desire for music satisfaction- as listeners *and* players. i find great new music all of the time, but i've found that my search for it has become ...longer. a lot of chaff to sift through. i honestly, dearly hope that modern music, produced for the masses, hasn't drastically fallen towards the least common denominator. sadly, i fear that it has.

The foolery was on Mount Etna where the lava came from that buried Pompeii. All the stills at the beginning are Pompeii as well. All those seagull and background noises are made by the lead and bass guitar. The repeated echo is played on the grand piano that you can see from time to time. There will never be another band like PF. I was so lucky to be going to concerts when they were around...!!! Talking about the 'experience'... I'm my day I couldn't afford enhancements so just dimmed the lights and cranked the stereo up as high as the neighbours would allow. That did it as well. Great reaction man.. Keep on rocking.

On the album, Gilmour was set up in a studio at Abbey Road used for recording orchestras, just his amp and stack close mic'd, middle of the room mic'd, and a mic at the back of the cavernous room. Pompeii is far more subdued, but the band performance as a whole is better. Waters is really pumping that bass and with fantastic tone. Mason is pounding away more authoritatively at Pompeii as he does on Set the Controls, Careful With That Axe, and One of These Days especially, and Rick Wright is fantastic throughout Pompeii. All that said, I, too wish Gilmour had felt more inclined toward ripping it, but the performance is still magesterial.
