Pompeii, a city in southern Italy that was destroyed in 79 AD by a volcano (Vesuvius), killing everyone. Pink Floyd performed in the ancient Roman amphitheater; epic concert. Please also do part 2. Nick Mason, drummer extraordinaire. Also worth checking out the last time David and Rick performed Echoes together in 2006 in Gdansk, Poland.

I lived in Sorrento at the time, 20mnts by train from Pompei. I was 12 but my friend older brother and some of his friend had heard about the filming and brought us with them to try and bunk in. We just managed to hide in the bushes and listen to Floyd rehearsing for about half hour before security found us and threw us out. Worth it!

The bits of the video with the bubbling lava were filmed in the Campi Flegrei, just north of Naples. It’s vast area of underground volcanic activity often bubbles up to the surface around Pozzuoli and the solfatara. Vesuvius itself is a dormant volcano but still active. The last time it erupted was 1944 with a plume of fine ash that destroyed crops all around the bay of Naples when it fell.
