That instrument David Gilmore played the solo on is called lap steel guitar. It sounds surreal!

it had to be too as it just sounds so longingly wistful whereas a normal guitar wouldn't have had that and would have jarred you out of the trance this song puts you into.

For me, this is the best version of my favourite Pink Floyd song. Everyone knows the Comfortably Numb guitar solo, but IMO this is the most beautiful solo Gilmour has ever created. 100% pure emotion, and the stage + background video make it even better. Magical. Check out David Gilmour - The Blue feat. Crosby & Nash (Remember That Night). It has another magic guitar solo.

Much of what PF did was influenced by The Beatles. Much of what every band did was influenced by The Beatles. They were the great innovators who did more to change popular music than any other band. I don't think you can compare any band to The Beatles. Who said that? David Gilmour.

What a wonderful reaction Ruben! This song is kind of a farewell by them, because its the closer of their last album The Division Bell way back in 1994 (I wasn't even borne, I'm from 1995)...yes they released The endless river in 2014 but in my opinion that record is a sort of spin off of their discography. The slide guitar solo at the end is simply beyond human! Don't worry, more PF suggestion will come and I promise they will be as great as this one, or even better!

I am curious Ruben.......where would you rank this song, in terms of; musicianship, composition, writing and most importantly (for me) the emotion. Now at 68, I have such a deep sense of appreciation for the wonderful times and memories I have had in my life. This song, more than any other, makes me think of my past (the good and the bad) and just be glad for all of it. It has made me who I am. The old saying is, “You can never go back”, is true, but I wouldn’t want to......I like the memories....just the way they are. Some songs make you happy, some sad......but this song makes you remember.

The studio version is just as beautiful! It's clarity is astounding, but this live performance is something special! Since my mom's passing in April 2018, I never fail to get tears in my eyes when Dave hits the lap steel guitar. This song was one of her favourites (I introduced her to the Floyd), so between this, Wish You Were Here & Shine On You Crazy Diamond, it brings back fond memories of her...and a longing (or High Hopes if you will) of the day we'll meet again!! Great reaction to a stellar tune!

Definitely one of the precious few groups, outside of the worlds of Classical art music or Jazz, whose creations go straight to the back of the brain, instead of just hammering away at superficial sensations or obsessing on the literal content of lyrics. They absolutely take you away to a place far richer and deeper, and that is something very very special.

Technically, he is playing a peddle steel guitar (it has a volume peddle controlled with his right foot) and he calls it that. Gilmour also plays a lap steel on occasion (Meltdown concert) where a small guitar literally sits in his lap but played virtually the same as a peddle steel with a slide.
