We remember Roger 'Syd' Barrett here in Cambridge as a local lad who was like a comet in the sky which burnt brilliantly for a short time. His death here was a quiet affair in true English style but I attended one of the tribute concerts. Before the pandemic the drummer of Pink Floyd ,Nick Mason, came and played a set mainly of Syd's stuff in the Corn Exchange, the place where Syd last played in public in 1972.

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is one of the truly great records of the rock music era - 1960s til now. It's just an explosion of creativity, utterly unique, and in a very small group of albums that achieved such a level or originality and ceativity.

The "Piper" album was badly produced! Joe Boyd, who produced The Pink Floyd"s first single "Arnold Layne/Candy And A Currant Bun", would have done a much better job. I wish the band had signed with "Polydor Records" then Joe Boyd would have produced the album. Boyd was replaced with Norman Smith when the The Floyd signed with E.M.I. The rear drawing is actually a picture of The Pink Floyd.

What made this record stand out at the time was Rick Wright's unique, other-worldly keyboard playing, different from anything that had gone before and a perfect vehicle for Sid's whimsical lyrics, notable on" Scarecrow".

I always however, go out of my way to listen to Syd tunes, whether from PIper, Madcap. Barrett, or Opel. He was the best songwriter! His tunes are timeless and filled with pure emotions. I know very little but remember (barely) reading an article about him in the seventies (in a magazine). I believe he was living at his mother's house in London, and gardening. He was interviewed for the article, so he was willing to brook questions, but only to a point. He said, and I believe this is an accurate quote, "It's very painful." There was a picture too. @@abigaildevoe

I got a little misty eyed at the end there when she was talking about Syd. I love him, too. I got Barrett and The Madcap Laughs as a double album when I was a teen and listened to them practically every day for a very long time. Syd expressed something that I didn't even know was in me, and also seemed to give me permission to be silly and whimsical sometimes. Sure, I love Dostoevsky, but I also love with equal enthusiasm Caroll's Alice books. He was a rare one.

British psychedelia was centered more on childhood reveries, in the U.S. it centered on long instrumental solos, acid rock. For 4 whole discs of British psychedelic music you must hear the "Nuggets II" box set from Rhino. Amazing stuff, mostly by bands you never heard of but many of the band members will be familiar to you.

Great anecdote: playing Piper at work in a kitchen, a younger hippie girl co-worker who routinely wore Pink Floyd shirts scrunched up her face and said "Gah, what is this Shit?" Which is funny enough, right, but when I said "Pink Floyd!!", without missing beat she goes "OH! I love Pink Floyd!"😂😂😂😂

The thing about comparing Syd's and Roger's work is: we don't know what Syd would have been writing in the 70s. The musical climate was entirely different in the 70s than it was in '67. Roger's work is informed by what happened to Syd, his melodic gifts and even his singing. Syd's "Dark Globe" sounds like Roger on "The Wall". //GREAT THUMBNAIL!!!!

PS: And excellent review! PSS: Flaming was actually the b-side to "See Emily Play", so it was expendable. That's why "See Emily Play" opens the album. In America, they wanted to capitalize on the singles for albums. In the UK, they kept them off the albums (as you know) to give extra value. That's the biggest reason why you have different track listings, not to mention greed. In America, it was 12 per side as opposed to 14 in the UK (or maybe it was 10 to 12, can't remember). So the US companies could make entire albums out of held-over album tracks and UK singles. In America, there was a new Beatle album out every three months (as opposed to the two a year in England).

Another gem of a video covering a gem of an album, thank you Abigail ! I've just returned from spending a few days in London, including wearing my "Bike" t-shirt, and I can confirm that it's still a small place, with lots of famous 60's landmarks within walking distance of each other. Sadly some are no longer in their original form but the memories remain. For me PF really moved on from Syd's underlying influence after the "Dark Side" tour. The recorded version of DSOTM was very different to the one they toured with prIor to the release of the album. I've never taken sides in the Syd era versus post Syd debate, and I think you've done a great job in keeping that out of your review, whilst giving a really comprehensive overview of the album itself, top job !

Groovy Baby...🎶🍄 "the" Pink Floyd... That's two mondays in a row. You knocked me off my chair. BlockBuster albums. As you said last week, We never would have DSOTM without Syd getting the ball rolling. "Piper" is filled with sound effects too. The songs are so quirky and simplistic, their genius, that's what sells. I finally got a copy of Piper in 2016. I had to research it. Mine seems to be a 1967 but released in 1969 on Tower, stereo, ST 5093, but has a multi colored striped label. Chapter is spelled right. On the cover it's" My" stethoscope, on the label it's "Thy". Also in 2016 I found a double colored vinyl set "Complete BBC Sessions 1967-1968" I'm just now interested in seeing if they merged Barrett era with Gilmour on stage or not. You are starting a new trend of bringing back 60's style clothing to match the albums. When I hear "Lucifer Sam" it feels like a 007 James Bond soundtrack. I really dig those long improv tracks that go on and on, when you're in the groove, just keep going. I'm absolutely sure Syd would have gone on writing songs and The Floyd would have had a different path. I'm grateful for all the albums. I wish the band hadn't imploded like it did. But, I have kept up with all their solo projects too. Keep spinning @ 33 1/3....📀

It’s a masterpiece; their first 2 LPs seem similar in nature to me. They expanded and grew as a band from there. If you can find the song Syd did called “Bob Dylan Blues” it’s great; even if he’s revealing his delusion about who Dylan was/is. It shows his whit and sarcasm, just as his only song on A Saucer of Secrets, “Jugband Blues” does so clearly. He was on another level. Great channel one more thing to look forward to on Mondays!

You've nailed it again Abby. Your fashion sense is straight out of a 1967 London club watching The Pink Floyd as they blazed a trail through the psychedelic scene. Piper is my favourite Floyd album. I, like you, love Syd Barrett and his sense of fun and experimentation is sorely lacking after he left the band. Dark Side is a high point and The Wall and Wish You were Here have their moments but, for my ears, I would rather listen to Syd singing about Gnomes, Bikes and Scarecrows to a psychedelic backing. - WATCHING BUTTERCUPS COME TO LI -I- I -I -I -I - IFE !!!

I'm a Beatles student and also in high school, instead of doing homework, I learned how to play all these songs on my guitar. And I was a fan in the first part of the 80s, so before everyone's catalogues were aligned on both sides of the Atlantic, so the US track listings,,,,,,,well as I've been saying since 1987, Dave Dexter Jr ruined my life.

Being a child of the 70s and 80s more so than the 60s, the 60s music scene has never been my cup og Gin( other than the usual suspects and occasional hits). But watching your show makes me wanna have Piper. Bought the Stones album Their Satanic... a few days ago, after watching Ms Devoe present it,and i DO like it more and more especially the jacket on the album ,how ´bout that, old dogs can learn! Just put Piper on my wish/to buy list,so thanks for your excellent efforts and inspiration. We´re in one hell of a heatspell here in Sweden right now so blaming parts of the rant on heatstroke! Thanks for sharing and take care!

wow thank you so much! it's really cool that i've gotten people looking at these albums in a different light, especially if they're outside "the norm" of what they'd typically listen to. always looking to bring something new to the table. thanks so much for watching!

@@abigaildevoe ,yeah, that´s the beauty that music brings, unity and enrichment! I love to leave my comfort zones and discover new zones(feels a bit weard to say that about institutions like The Stones and Floyd ,hahaha) Cheers!

Piper was the first Pink Floyd album I ever heard and it remains my favorite. I also love Madcap Laughs and Barrett.

There was no Vinyl Monday that day so, forlornly, he went looking for the gates of dawn. VM so quickly established the importance of cover artwork to the vinyl experience. Holding albums in your hands is enjoyable. Looking at the tracklisting I was thinking how great it would jave been to have Emily there not realizing that it was included for the US release. It feels right. The melody is lovely. In the spirit of 'the death of the author' theory I've always imagined the song to be about Emily Bronte. I'm surprised by how unaquainted with the album I am and the snappy pop of Lucifer Sam takes me by surprise. The organ on Flaming is dreamlike. How good this record is and wouldn't they have developed into a very different band with Syd's influence. Arnold Layne was a catchy singly too. Interstellar is imaginative, distinctive. You're admiration for Syd Barrett shines: it's a warm appraisal for this fine work. I didn't arrange it Emily I'm Sorry by Boygenius has just played on BBC radio 6.

I wonder if UK bands released more singles in the USA, so they might end up on Juke Boxes, to help promote the Albums. Probly Juke Boxes at teen center, high schools, college cafeterias, The YMCA teenager centers, restaurant and bars. I always liked those jukebox amplifiers that the band Devo had.

honestly even though I don't like Pink Floyd I seriously admire all the nerdy info you bring to talking about a format that I as well obsess over.

Fantastic to see this and beautifully presented. I LOVE Syd too (lukewarm on most other PF). Subscribed! Wow, no Astronomy Domine, no Bike on the original US issue? !!! Equal best tracks with Lucifer Sam, for me. 😁 You mentioned Beefheart. PLEASE!
