This week the Vinyl Geek checks out the classic 1973 album, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. Is it as great as it's cracked up to be or is it overrated, you decide!

from what I recall, PF was a great psychedelic band that really didn't sound that great on psychedelics. The Beatles, on the other hand were great. Better still, Brian Eno, especially on the Hero's album.

Kaladin Stormblessed he didnt actually die from lsd but his abuse of it did make him a recluse in which he remained til the time of his death. I believe he even had a 3 day binge (which is v unusual for most psych enthusiasts) w a gf before he made his solo album ‘The Madcap Laughs(1970)’ but it wasnt til after that he locked himself up from the world til the age of 60 when he died as a recluse in Cambridge.

I like this album but I don't understand why it's such a cultural phenomenan. Pretty much everybody and their grandmothers have Dark Side on their playlist, even the non-progressive rock music fans. Personally, I thought Wish you Were Here was a better album over all.
@NoN4m31617 жыл бұрын
It was innovative for its time. The bands use of the mini moog, other various instruments and instrumentation set the album and band apart from everyone else. People still claim that if the album was released today, it would still be as relevant as it was for its time and have the same impact.

Daniel Rand and drugs. i know that u don't need this for this album to be amazing..but taking LSD and listening to this album does make it even better tbh cuz it's already awesome to start

You dont need drugs to achieve an altered state of consciousness ;) On the other hand, the experience is waaay differend than in standard mode :P
@MaTriXzvR7 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest with you that I tried listening to some tracks from Pink floyd before my experimentation with drugs and it didn't really appeal to my ears. After sophmore and junior year though drugs opened my mind into this new state of consciousness about the world and since then listening to pink floyd made them be my favorite band. I guess some people already see the world and music in a unique way such as you do Daniel and then some others need some sort of way to open their mind to new things such as I have
@nationradical8 жыл бұрын
Overrated? Nah. Overplayed? I guess. It's that good it makes you listen over and over again until it gets old, but by then you've discovered Wish You Were Here, Meddle, Piper, Animals, etc. that it's no big deal. I discovered DSOTM like many fans do, around their early high school years. Of course I've heard of it and recognized the iconic album artwork, but there was nothing like listening to Pink Floyd for the first time. They're now my favorite band by a mile, and I only wish I could have seen them in concert.

It's probably the single strongest channel I've ever come across - theme wise. Every single song has a "theme", mostly the things every single individual has experienced or has concerns about. The album starts with a genuine heartbeat, as if you were inside the album waiting for the music to start, as Speak to Me gradually transitions into Breathe, a gentle, relaxing song on not rushing into anything enjoying and feeling the life we have around us, the air, the nature, etc. That it's your choice the way you live your life because in the present you think you have time to live "long you live and high you fly", but as time passes you"ll realize no matter what you're just another human being and life isn't really as magical as we think it actually is "All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be". After the realization of this you get "scared" or try to escape the reality, and the second song On the Run is literally the action of escaping, the whole struggle of trying escape, and if you closely listen until the end of the song with headphones you can hear the running steps go back and forth, because you'll notice that there is no escape, there is no place you can go to to escape life and reality. And then the ringing clock, ringing as if your time was up, the third song Time, the lyrics poetically expressing what we are always told by older people, but we will only feel it with experience. Time is short, there are going to be days were you don't care about time, there's nothing to do, there is "time to kill today", but you shouldn't take that for granted because after a while even the if "the sun is the same in a relative way" you'll will eventually get older and be "one day closer to death". And as time keeps ticking and you're closer to death, the 5th song comes up, The Great Gig in the Sky. A beautiful depiction using no lyrics at all other than the questions Richard Wright (r.i.p) says to himself at the beginning, with powerful vocals expressing death. The first part of the vocals express the fear, the pain we might have in dying, but as we realize we shouldn't be afraid of dying the vocals become more tender, softer as if we were embracing death. I won't explain more but for those people who think The Dark Side of the Moon is overrated or don't understand why it's so popular, read carefully this paragraph that I just wrote and just think about how just with 5 songs I was able to communicate such deep, powerful, real thoughts. And I haven't even talked about the sound, not only the lyrics but the sound as well, the emotional, amazing guitar played by Gilmour in most songs including those badass solos in Money, Time and Any Colour you Like. The fact that every single time Mason hits the drums it's perfect, there's not a hit too little or too many, the drums are perfect, especially the way he magically plays the drums to transition the songs (especially the transition from Us and the Them to Any Colour you like). The keyboard/piano throughout the entire album by Rick Wright, the piano in The Great Gig in the Sky... beautiful. Waters, the lyrics in every single song is perfect, a true poet, and plays the bass also perfectly in every song. This is why it's one of the best albums of all time (in any genre, not only rock)
@danithedorito5 жыл бұрын
personally i think the first part of the vocals in great gig in the sky doesn't express fear, but the beauty. nonetheless this is an awesome writeup. thanks for writing that.

On the run was originally meant to express the fear of flying, but it can also be interpret as a commentary on how fast time passes during mid age (the transition from an infant to an old man, from breathe to time). I particularly enjoy how it depicts cacophony of daily life, the helicopter sound, and also the explosion that "pops" our bubble of reality.

Released 1/3/1973?? In Jan 1970 I went back to Uni in Brighton ( England ) early for the second term and Floyd were playing The Dome concert venue (check it out) , as there weren't many students around I managed to get a couple of tickets. That evening I was expecting past work but they were trying out some new tracks for a future album, it was 'Dark Side of the Moon'. So the album was in gestation for some time. A masterpiece.

I had the same idea.

I think that is forbidden by The Geneva Convention under poison gas, Pity it could work well in any war. Although the US troops were pretty high on LSD in Vietnam and look what happened in that war,

Islam allows music it's just that every religion has extremists. I promise most Muslims are not like that.

I really enjoy your videos, and I’ve been binging them lately, and you do a good job of recreating an acid trip. If you would have just done a thorough review of the background history and the making of dark side of the moon like you did with the wall and animals- I think you would have a top tier video about dsotm. I highly recommend you visit the album and just give us the facts about the background and everything, that would be great, thanks!

How cool the way you turn to face the camera whilst being occupied. Reminds me of Hugh Hefner in the show Playboy After Dark.

One of the albums I can get down to, from start to end, both altered and normal. Fantastic work.

The first time I listened to this album was late at night when the moon was full and I put on a pair of high quality headphones. My experience was absolutely crazy I felt every beat and each song seemed as if I was being played the album right in front of me. And when "On The Run" was on I felt like someone was running through my head. This albums ties first with "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" with "The Wall" as my 2nd place. BTW great review.

My favorite version of this album is Alan Parson's Quadraphonic mix (2 speakers in front and 2 behind you). The stereo version is great, but the Quad mix takes things up a notch. DSotM is one of those meant for Quad albums. Seek it out!
