Any Live Pulse song is amazing.

For David Gilmour the song reminds him of Syd Barrett. The song starts (on the album) on an AM radio with the channel settling on a lone guitar. Think of this as Syd. Then a listener (Gilmour) with his guitar joins in and they play together until the rest of the band joins in and Syd's guitar fades out. Syd and David busked one summer in France before David joined the Floyd. The album which this song is from is generally understood as a Syd Barrett tribute though the main theme of the album is absence. For Roger Waters who wrote the lyrics the song is a more general appeal: "Can you free yourself enough to be able to experience the reality of life as it goes on before you and with you, and as you go on as a part of it or not. Because if you can't, you stand on square one -- until you die. That's what the song's about. All the songs are encouraging me, I guess I write them for me, and it's to encourage myself not to accept a lead role in a cage: to go on demanding of my self that I keep auditioning for the walk on part in the war, because that's where I want to be. I want to be in the trenches. I don't want to be at headquarters or I don't want to be sitting in a hotel somewhere. I want to be engaged in a way my father would approve of."

The Dark Side of the Moon album is in essence about death. Syd Barrett loved to bake his cake for creative thought. Barrett is considered to be the founder that launched Pink Floyd to fame and success. He was the principal songwriter behind the band’s debut 1967 masterpiece "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn." His creative genius was derailed by a drug-fueled psychological collapse, forcing his 1968 removal from the group he helped form. His presence is felt in some of their finest work. He was a guitar-wielding hero to some and a cautionary tale of fame, drugs and excess failure to others. And yet to still others he’s the ultimate romantic ideal of a reclusive artist. Syd Barrett, the rock icon, died long before pancreatic cancer claimed his physical body on July 7th, 2006. It is said that he went insane because of his experiments with hallucinogens that eventually caused his unfortunate downfall. His mental health deteriorated to the point that it was affecting his ability to integrate with the other band members and create and perform as a musician. He was replaced by his former school friend David Gilmour who would previously on occasion be brought in as second guitar.

I'm not used to watching you tube videos but by chance I saw on my cell phone how an American millennial reacted when listening to the best Spanish guitarist of all time, Paco de Lucía. It was very interesting, since then I have checked several channels and the truth is that I am following yours. You have a very good musical culture and solid reactions and analysis, you understand the reason for the lyrics without the problems of young people that sometimes it is difficult for them to understand in the time and context in which they were written and sometimes they try to find literal meanings. Pink Floyd wish you were here is a jewel, for me along with the dark side of the moon the best albums. I've seen them a couple of times in Barcelona in the eighties, a wonderful experience. This is one of the saddest songs I listen to, but i love it. Syd got involved with the Timothy Leary movement, who exposed "expanding your mind through drugs." In particular, LSD. He began doing more and more, and it affected his work. They became concerned, but intervention wasnt a thing yet. One day, he was just very different. Everything was off. They tried to record, but he couldn't play the guitar. They tried and tried over months, but he was never the same, and never able to play again. He was a founder of Pink Floyd, and he was their creative visionary for years, and several records. They were like brothers. But, he was gone now. The questions are criticism of the movement. They promised expanding your mind, but they destroyed his mind. They promised truth and enlightenment, but he was never able to truly function again. This is a truly sad song, because Syd was able to stand before them, but he was never there again. "Wish You Were Here." Syd and gilmore once had a talk about their parents' generation, and how they were defined by the war years, how the nation was unified by the war effort, how they wish they could do more than just a small part, but they acknowledged thats probably what they would be religated to. So, understanding that, the line that is particular sad for me is "Did you exchange a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage?" The cage being his drug addled mind, where he is all alone, isolated from the world, but he plays the lead (and only) role.

David Gilmore (Floyd's lead singer) described the changed Syd this way: he went from long hair to bald, slender to chubby, and looked completely like a homeless person. Gilmore and Syd were friends since both were 14 years old, but David had not seen Syd in several years, since Syd left the band.

Sid walk into Abbey Road when they were recording this, nobody recognized him as no one had seen him in yrs. #0 minutes ans Dave finally new who it was . A twilight Zone moment. seen this played all over the world and the amazing that so many people sing this while they are playing .ex. a person and friends playing and sing this in South America outside the theater.

This song hints at Syd Barrett's descent into insanity with the lyrics such as "can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail" etc. But the real lament about Syd is the song "Shine on you Crazy Diamond". And tragically David Gilmour and Syd were childhood friends so when David sings the song it is personal to him. One of the most poignant versions is from David's concert in Gdansk. Syd Barret didn't have mental problems because of drugs, on the contrary, he tried to treat his mental problems with various drugs. but unfortunately he didn't succeed. You could definitely go with the term bad in how he looked compared to before because he had shaved his eyebrows off shaved his head and put on a lot of weight which is why they didn't recognize him at first!! The irony is that if he had not gone crazy and lost it due to drugs which brought on schizophrenia which is what I've heard, Pink Floyd would have never written "Dark Side of The Moon" or "Wish You Were Here" or "Animals" or any of their great albums that we know them by today! Who knows maybe they would have even written greater albums than those but I kind of have my doubts there! As far as big bands they've sold over 250 million albums worldwide! Dark Side of the Moon alone is approaching fifty million albums sold and still sells eight to ten thousand copies per week! Also the concert you just watched where they played "Wish you were here" seats nineteen thousand spectators Earl's Court in London which sold out 15 nights in a row for over a quarter of a million people going to that one venue!!!

The opening is low quality as it represents someone surfing the music channels on the radio and settling on a guitar solo. To which the listener then plays along on his guitar.

MOST OF WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT SYD BARRETT AND HOW IT PERTAINS TO THIS SONG WAS CORRECT!! THE REASON THAT THE BAND DID NOT FIRST RECOGNIZED SYD WHEN HE WALKED INTO THE STUDIO (WHEN THEY WERE RECORDING THIS FOR THE ALBUM) WAS BECAUSE HE WAS OVERWEIGHT AND COMPLETELY SHAVED BALD INCLUDING HIS EYEBROWS!!! IT TOOK THE BAND A FEW MINUTES TO REALIZE THAT IT WAS SYD!! IT WAS TOLD IN INTERVIEWS OF BAND MEMBERS THAT IT WAS A STRANGE ENCOUNTER AND IT WAS THE LAST TIME THAT THEY SAW SYD I BELIEVE!! VERY SAD STORY BUT TOO MUCH LSD AND HIS BRAIN CHEMISTRY JUST COULD NOT HANDLE IT!!!

Syd turned up during the recording and wandered into the studio...... They didn’t recognise him because he was bloated, over weight, bald and shaved eyebrows..... and probably more. Incidentally..... not sure which song they were recording, maybe Wish You Here or Shine on You Crazy Diamond...... both written for Syd. Syd was not impressed with the song, he didn’t think it was any good. lol
