My friend, your use of words to describe these albums is nothing short of art itself. Very bold, although understandable, to place the wall at #8. The Dark Side of the Moon has been so important to me and the lyrics have evolved as I grow old. Rather, I have evolved with the lyrics. Very well done video, my friend! Keep up the great work!

@@michaelsalisbury1477 Interestingly, I was in a bar one time, and some younger people, offspring of my friends, asked me what bands I liked. (Which is only a step up from 'What's your favourite colour?') After naming a few bands they'd never heard of, I said Pink Floyd. They said that they quite liked The Division Bell, but didn't know much about the earlier stuff... (I've heard The Division Bell probably twice, and that was enough for me.)

@@monty2005 It's curious that, from reading the comments on KZfaq videos, Animals is like Marmite. You either love it or hate it. Maybe hate is too strong a word for Animals, but until The Wall was released, it was my least favorite of my Floyd collection. But then The Wall took that slot...
@monty2005
@monty2005 Жыл бұрын
@@lazer2365 I agree about the Marmite thing. Animals came out a few months before I was born, so I can only remember The Wall coming out onwards (I remember being terrified by the video to Brick 2 when it was on Top of the Pops around Christmas ‘79). After I discovered DSotM and WYWH in my mums record collection around the age of 10 or 11, and Dark Side especially kicking off my PF habit, I went out and got the albums over yhe next few years (or got people to give them me as gifts). Animals was the last one of the big ones that I got, having always put it off because it only had five tracks. I can still remember the day I brought it home and listened to it for the first time. It was truly a WOW moment. I fell in love with the album the first time I ever heard it. It is my absolute favourite album, by any artist/band ever! Having heard the 2018 remix of Dogs, it’s given me a second WOW moment. Pigs is my favourite track, so I can’t wait until the 16th to hear it. I just wish there were live recordings from the In the Flesh tour, like professional ones. I definitely remember reading that James Guthrie was asked to work on one show from that tour after the success of Is There Anybody Out There, but for some reason he felt he couldn’t do it justice, yet it’s said there are no professional multi tracks of any of the shows. At least we have Oakland ‘77! As for The Wall, for me too it occupies my least favourite slot, at least of the Meddle onwards albums, but I had always wanted to see it performed live, and I was lucky enough to see Roger do it at Birmingham in an arena setting then again at Wembley Stadium. I have to say that was another WOW moment, especially at Birmingham. I’d love to see all of Animals performed live. Have you ever heard Live Frogs Set 2 by Les Claypool? It’s a fucking amazing set consisting entirely of Animals live!

I agree with the sentiment that “The Final Cut” is essentially a Roger Waters solo record. But if that is so, then we need to consider “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” as being a David Gilmour solo record, and in my view “The Final Cut” is vastly superior, and it didn’t need remixing.

However, especially David's and Rick's musical work on "Animals" is incredible, so I don't think you can tell it a Waters solo album. Also, the musical pearls on "The Wall" shine because of David's musical work. When you compare "The final Cut" to Water's real solo albums you can clearly hear, that it has only Floyd in the name, all the great influence of the other band members are missing (unfortunately) - no comparison to "Animals" or "The Wall"!

I find The Final Cut to be more of a reflection of my life afflictions than any other of their albums. The Final Cut has been one of the albums that make me cry every single time I listen to it and I always recommend it to others. It is one of my favorite albums by Pink Floyd and I don't find any post-Waters production worth musically or content-wise, except for maybe a couple of songs from a couple of albums. I have spent entire months dwelling in The Final Cut. I find it has one of the most dramatic abrupt nuances in the entire Pink Floyd catalog. And it requires tremendous sensitivity and tremendous fortitude to listen to it. No other album requires this type of self-check and mental preparation from the listener. David Gilmour does an amazing job where he contributes in it and I love the sax player's contribution as well. The lyrics are superb, touching, painful, deep. They tear the soul like no other album does.

Piper forever 🌈. They were never more creative or far out as on that album. Interstellar Overdrive is an experimental masterpiece and the rest of the album is so playful and dreamy. Syd was just wonderful. You can certainly hear his influence on Roger in songs like Brain damage and pretty much the whole of The Wall is very like the Mad Cap Laughs.

Atom is my fave. It's got spooky bits, religous sounding choirs and I think the first extended Gilmour solo where we hear the fantastic melodies he can create, backed with a funky rythm which is developed in Echoes. And then there is Fat Old Sun...........WOW

My 2 favorites are Wish You Were Here and Piper at the Gates of Dawn. They both represent Floyd's 2 major lineups flawlessly, and are thematically linked in that WYWH is largely about Syd's fall into the abyss of insanity. Awesome list my friend.

Roger Waters sounds a lot like Donald Trump: In October 2016, Waters arrogantly announced: "We are going to take a new show on the road. The content is very secret. It’ll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things. Probably 75% of it will be old material and 25% will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. It’ll be spectacular, like all my shows have been." Wow, that's better than Alec Baldwin. Bigly.

A well researched review and analysis of the albums! For now, my ranking would be: 1. Wish you were here (Every song of this album is giving me goosebumps. Shine on you crazy diamond is the best composition in their whole carrier, in my opinion) 2. The Wall (It´s a fantastic journey and it has opened a new point of view on life for me) 3. The Animals (Fantastic melodies and great lyrics) 4. Dark Side of the Moon (My very first Space Rock album and my favourite one) 5. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn 6. A Saucerful of Secrets (I love Jugband Blues and Corporal Clegg) 7. Atom Heart Mother 8. The Final Cut (The lyrics are good) 9. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 10. The Divison Bell 11. More 12. Meddle 13. Obscured by Clouds 14. The Endless River 15. Ummagumma

This is a very bold best to worst list. Interesting in that I am not sure many others would agree with you, but your reasons for placing the albums where you did are well documented! Well done! Like Rush, I think that there are supporters and detractors for almost every album, which makes those bands so interesting. I wouldn’t argue too vehemently with you about any of the placements except for placing The Final Cut so low and The Division Bell so high. However, I realize that I am in the minority. Thanks again for the great discussion on a fabulous discography.

Fantastic ranking/reviews! Very well put and interesting takes. My top 5: DSotM, DB, WYWH, Animals, Wall. It’s oddly refreshing to see someone else unafraid to say how great Dark Side of the Moon is. It feels like so many knock it down because of its popularity and how cliche it is to say it’s a masterpiece. But this is one of those cases where the hype is very much earned. I rarely throw the word “perfect” out about any piece of media/art. But it truthfully is the closest thing imaginable to perfect to me.

I realise that I'm late to the party by two years but it's taken me around a month to work up the courage to view your thoughts given the honesty that I have appreciated in your reviews. I am pleasantly surprised by your list although, as predicted, I'd rank The Wall higher, but I was 18 when I bought it on the day of release and I loved it, still do. Like you, and possibly all other Floyd fans, Dark Side is my number 1 favourite album and I only bought it in '76 at age 15 when I was also discovering punk whilst still appreciating other genres like glam rock, early hard rock, reggae, ska plus music by Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, ELO, SAHB, Ian Dury and the Blockheads et al. Interesting and thought provoking video. Thank you. ps if you ever do an ABBA review I'll consider unsubscribing!

Very well expressed and understandable listing. I would only switch around a couple of entries and yes, the wall would be higher lol. I also get a lot of grief as I would have Reason/Division Bell as higher up but the thing that struck me overall is the sheer quality and variety of the catalogue as a whole. For all the band conflict they certainly produced a lot of groundbreaking stuff, just wish they had enjoyed the journey more, they all deserved a lot for giving us this music.

First time listener and subscriber...while I may not agree with the rankings or some of the opinions, I enjoyed the analysis and descriptions, especially the more technical instrumental factors. One thing I don’t get from a lot of album reviewers and I think is paramount, is “what kind of overall mood does this album invoke?” Because music is largely about moods and emotive reactions. Edit: the pic of Syd at the end was unexpected and made me suddenly a bit weepy...
