Exactly what I was thinking, propagation from other plants is already so commonplace that I don’t think that’s why they are cutting the tops off

Yep, that was my first thought as well. I guess big business has to find a way to inject evil practices into fruit growing as much as they can. hah!
@sm-fl4vx
@sm-fl4vx 3 жыл бұрын
That is 100% correct. Many companies will remove the center or entire top of pinapples so you are not able to grow a plant from them. Though you are not going to grow full sized pinapples from the tops. Perhaps once the tree has gotten old enough it will produce larger fruit. But typically a tree grown from a top will only grow half sized pinapples.

They chopped the top of it so you couldn’t grow a new plant from the crown. It’s way of protecting their brand. I have grown a new plant from the crown of a pineapple I got from the grocery store. It did grow more pineapples (yes, unlike most ppl say, the new plant is not just good for supplying one pineapple and does not need to be discarded after the first growing season.) And yes, the resulting pineapples were just like the parent pineapple from the grocery store. Same size, same gorgeous colouring and the taste of them was even better!

haha, and the pinkglow website says they did it to be sustainable. "Should you open your Pinkglow™ package only to wonder if your pineapple has lost its crown, fret not. We remove and replant each crown before shipping, sustainably cultivating the next crop of this magnificent rarity. Plus, we didn’t want to overdress for the trip." copy-pasted from pinkglowpineapple.com. I believe the sustainable part is true, but del monte probably cared about protecting their creation more.

You can be alone in a tent atop a mountain you wanted to see during the pouring rain. Travel is work. When DelMonte introduce the "GOLD" pineapple in a corporate meeting, their competitors' dumpster-dived for the crowns thrown out after the meeting. DelMonte charged a premium (up to $15 in NYC). But in a couple of years EVERYONE was growing gold pineapples. They must have learned from that experience and chopped off the crowns, "neutering" their fruits.

Two things worth noting: They're likely contractually-obligated to prevent the potential spread of a patented fruit strain, same as "sumo ornages" and their equivalent mandarins stateside; "sunkist, yosemite gold", and the other gold I don't remember off-hand". Japan has essentially been doing this with fruit for centuries, I don't think it makes it less moral for some costa rican's to do it with the added-venire of pretentious and empty pseudo-culture. Also shipping was probably a solid $30 of that price tag lol...

@@Xlijkee How many people do you know with a iphone now days? Everyone is switching to android because the fact is android the much better and cheaper. People are starting to realize that apple is just ripping people off. At this point all apple has is aesthetics and the fact that it is simple. At this point at least 88% of the market is android users and apple loses more and more people every day. I own a iphone but it is a iphone 6. I use that iphone and once that iphone dies or needs replacing I will honestly go with a android. Either way when that news came out about the charger apple's stock dropped something like 1/3 of it's stock price in one day. in the EU I believe all GMO products must be labelled clearly when sold. This decision was made through massive referendums and national debates back around 2000ish. although the more I learned about biology the more I understood there is absolutely nothing to be concerned about when consuming GMOs. I'd happily survive on a diet made of pure crispr GMOs. But the public fear has saved us from an ugly, messy, problematic aftermath of a agricultural gold rush like GMO rush with millions of companies rushing to develop profitable bio products, and then those genes getting introduced to the wild. Also the few big globo companies like Monsanto suing everyone who accidently ended up growing corn with trademarked Monsanto genes.

@Soraia ljubtschenko Motta I understand the market for this sort of thing. I'm merely expressing that I am not that market, and I don't care much for that market. These are the kind of people that buy slightly-above-average whiskey in a hand-carved wooden box with a pamphlet created with museum-quality printing that describes a day in the life of the guy who rolls the barrels into various climate-controlled warehouse rooms; people with the dreary kind of success that comes from making something almost useless that enough people buy to provide a luxury income, like an app programmer, and they need to buy things that give them a sense of importance. Sorry about that tangent. I lived in Seattle for several years.

I don't think he is not for GMO because of the science. He's a gardener and there are some issues with patented seeds and independent growers of food. If most of the seed available becomes patented product it leads to bigger issues for those that like to garden freely and save and reuse their seeds or even sell them. The control over what's been natural for thousands of years is already a highly political issue.

@@let_uslunch8884 That is a good point, and I agree that we need to keep our eyes on the greedy corporations, but people forget that organic suppliers are also big corporations and they have been spreading a lot of mis-information about GMOs. Either way, we need to watch both kinds of corporations; conventional and organic. Wikipedia has a pretty even-handed summary of the issues: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetically_modified_food_controversies#Economy

When your masculinity is so fragile you can’t hold a pink fruit. I would have totally been on board if you went into some detail on being against genetic modification for the sake of social media clout, but just being mad that the fruit was pink and how “you’re not like other millennials”. Also, I’m very confident they cut the top off to prevent you from growing your own (and save on shipping costs).
