How I declutter now, after 10 years of decluttering. In February 2011, I started on KZfaq as a beauty channel, I began collecting all kinds of beauty products, makeup, skincare, clothes and home decor for creating content. Until one day in 2012, when the desire to become more "minimalist" entered my mind. Thinking back to my roots, I was always a minimalist at heart though, before social media. So what changed?
When I started working for myself in my late 20s, I was finally able to buy things I couldn't before. I even thought "I deserve" to enjoy the things I missed out on in my earlier years. On KZfaq, I saw other women treating themselves to lots of new things and I'd think to myself, "that looks fun" or "that looks so pretty," "I want nice things too." Life would be better, more interesting, more exciting... with all of these fun things one could own, right?
Growing up in the 80s-90s, my family had very little money, only enough for basic necessities. There was never money to buy "things" but I was grateful to have food and some thrift store clothes. Even as a teenager, my bedroom was always minimal, I had a twin bed and a couple of old blankets. I disassembled an old drum-set my father had and used the bass drum as a table and the tom toms, as my nightstands. And just like many other teens, I had a couple of posters on my walls, tropical island beaches I dreamed of exploring one day. We moved a lot, landlords would evict us, due to my mother's mental illness making them uncomfortable. Looking back I was never attached to "things" or living in one place. I always understood it could all be gone in a heartbeat.
I spent most of my time in nature, at the beaches, rivers and sand dunes. Exploring and enjoying experiences that can never be taken away, like the feeling of warm sunlight on your skin and swimming at the river on a perfect summer day.
In May 2000, I moved away from my small home town on the Oregon coast to Maui Hawaii, with $300 and everything I owned in a small backpack. It was the adventure of a lifetime.
In July 2017, my husband and I sold almost everything we owned and moved from Maui to the Sonoran desert in Arizona, with only what we could fit in the back of our Toyota truck. We moved into the 1950s home we're renting with our minimal amount of belongings and I loved the light and airy feeling of owning less stuff, it felt so good! I was so burnt out on over-consumption and this felt like freedom! I still had some old habits to work on, it can take awhile to recognize and reset our patterns of consumption.
While we're not extreme minimalists, I make a conscious effort to be very intentional with my purchases. I'm careful about the things I let into our home. We use minimalism as a design tool for our home and for peace of mind. Decluttering, being more intentional about the items we buy and choosing to own less overall, can transform our lives, reduce stress and anxiety. While saving us time, energy and money.
