Follow Dan McKinney as he revisits his old high school wrestling team on a journey that began with a simple question -- WHY? Why become a high school wrestler? With little glory and no cheerleaders, the sport lacks obvious reward, but that's just the beginning of a story that examines the unlikely mix of adolescence, Buddhism and punishing take-down moves. Running time 26 minutes

Great documentary. My dad was a highschool wrestler in the 80s also. He developed a brain tumor shortly before I joined the wrestling team. He never got to see my first match but I love the sport.

Dan McKinney As a former high school wrestler, this definitely resonates and takes me back. For all the work that wrestlers put in, they get virtually no glory. However, the old Dan Gable saying that "Once you've wrestled, everything else in life is easy," is true in my opinion. Beautiful documentary!!

Brought tears to my eyes. This past season was my first season wrestling and it was the absolute hardest thing I've ever endured mentally in my entire life. As you said in the video , I really did have a losing mentality. I was a "freshman" wrestling against seniors constantly , which ultimately would immediately crush my self-belief every time I stepped on the mat. Suddenly all the training I did , all the 3 hour practices , went to waste. Because I knew I was going to loose. One thing you said really caught my attention: " it was a relief to loose." I will never be the same person I was this past season. I know what I've done wrong now , and next season , I'm wrestling to win. Great video!

those of you guys who's first wrestling year is this year and are looking up wrestling videos to be better, I got some advice for you all. First, these videos won't make you better. to better yourself, you will have to do that on the practice mat. Yes you will be hit in the balls, yes you will go against hairy wrestlers who look intimidating, yes it is the hardest sport in highschool. if you think jv will be tough, you got another thing coming. but your aim as a jv wrestler is not a spot on varsity or a states championship. as a jv wrestler you will know what losing and winning is. you jv wrestlers will get mostly 3rd and 4th places. but because of those loses, they will drive you to a point where you don't want to be a loser any more. you're going to be at a point where you don't want to be a practice dummy anymore. you're eventually going to be at a point where you want to be a wrestler and a winner. believe me, that feeling you will get when you have your opponent in a pin, and the ref blows his whistle then lifts your hand in front of everybody is the most amazing feeling ever. that feeling is what winning feels like. having everyone in the building clapping and cheering at you because you've won. but the feeling of crying, and walking away and hearing everyone clapping for your opponent is the worst. use that feeling of defeat as a motivation to better yourself.

Thanks for the video, Dan. I was also one of those "detached" wrestlers. I never had the killer instinct. I wrestled because I liked the training and camaraderie of my teammates. I won more matches than I lost, but I was on a very competitive large high school team, so I was surrounded by guys who were very much into it. I was a pretty good baseball player, but it is nowhere near the emotional drain you can go through as a wrestler.

Your story is exactly what I’m going through right now. I didn’t make basketball or football and was pretty far in middle school. I said “fuck being fat” last year (freshman year) and I joined the wrestling team (my pe teacher last year is the head wrestling coach and he pushed me to do it) I was 170 last year, I’m 152 this year and developed some muscle. I haven’t won a match yet and I keep thinking just as you said “why do this, getting beat up over and over, the humiliation” I honestly thought I was the only one who was going through this. This gave me confidence to keep going and get hyped for practice today. The kid who got upset and punched the wall? I did almost the same thing except I tore my pec or something (I forget). I cant emphasize enough how alone I felt until this video.

Never became a beast of a wrestler until I started training with guys who could whoop my ass with ease. After three years I improved so much I could beat my coach. One thing that really helped me was to learn how to be aggressive. If you let the other person control the tempo of the match, you are bound to lose. You have to keep moving and commit 100% to every move you attempt. You can beat yourself in wrestling if you are not mentally strong, that's why the best of wrestlers train like soldiers.

I'm in middle school and this year was my first year wrestling and I broke my finger on the first meet. It is more of an emotional sport than physical. I remember walking onto that mat knowing I have a broken finger and knowing that I'll loose. It's a very bad felling but even though that happened I still am going to wrestle next year because I work out and I am very strong but emotionally I am weak. Because of this video I will work and stay with wrestling my whole life.

Im a freshman, first year wrestling, and I lost 13 out of fifteen matches my entire season. First one I won was a forfit as well; and let me tell you, when I got that first win... I was stunned. Last tournament of the season before districts and I had won my first match. Nobody said anything but my partner. I sat for almost twenty minutes before it really hit me and went off to cry. My season was crazy; at my schools tournament, first of the season I competed in, and I wrestled against a girl from the best girls team in our district. I went into three overtime matches. Having never done a single sport before in my life I was exhausted. Bothing my coach said was getting through to me, everything was muddled and all of the sudden i hear "One more point and you win." And I just drive. At the end of my match her coaches pulled me aside and told me how wonderful I'd done and how i had a bright season to come. My coach told me he was proud as other girls on the team watched me; i was srill out of breath, wheezing and hyperventilating but relatively calm. Trying my hardest not to cry, becuase the match mentally whipped my ass as much as it did physically. I leave the gym and hide out the locker room, make sure it's empty and just scream. I sit in the bleachers, and as soon as my mom touches me i the tears finally fall. I was so mad to be done. That match which should have given me hope to improve ripped me apart and left me incontinent for the rest of my season. I maybe took four shots out of all of my season after that. I make it to districts becuase I'm the only one in my weight class, and while i was still an unconfident wrestler, I became passionate for the sport. Like.... Ive tried so many things previously in my life and none of them really stuck to me, but wrestling makes me determined. I fought my best but lost both matches. A braquet of 5, all I had to do was win one match to move on. And i got last. I was okay and at peace with that; I'd tried what i thought was my hardest. I'd accepted what life was, and as the regional qualifiers practiced, i sat on the sidelines, doing homework, yearning to be with my team. It was okay though. Two days before regionals i get a messae from my coach. Someone in my weight class got injured. I could compete in regionals. Later that day i find out the girl who got injured was from the match that snapped me. A senior, at that. I went through practice in the boys uniform that are washed all together and in spare shoes three sizes too big until my mom brought mine half way through, against guys in my weight class; 138. I got back to it the next day with girls in the weight classes above me. 148, 158, and 165 (we did a group of 4 rotation) regionals came and my first match was against a girl who had won for my weight class last year; her record being 3 loses - 40 wins for the year. Another senior. I lasted all three rounds before being pinned, and ultimately it was one of my best matches. Wrestling is a hard fucking sport. Both mentally and physically its draining, but that one win I got erased all the pain from the begining. My off season won't be spent fumbling with the basics but growing and learning. Next pre season I'm going to grow. The sport has sucked me in; I'm sticking with it ans hope you do to. The day you can kick ass wil come.

I am a 17 year old junior wrestling at 160lbs-170lbs. My freshman year was miserable, that summer I started to train but would have my ass handed to me by the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. I barley won 3 matches that season amd my first win was from a girl. I ended up taking 7th from that same tournament after beating some dude. My sophomore year was just as miserable, I played football and broke my wrist before the season for wrestling. Not only that but I was out of shape. After lossing and being eliminated from tournaments and dual meets I was so done. However I kept going to practice in the varsity room. This one dual however something sparked in me. I used all that rage, harnest it and turned it into aggression. I beat the kid 12-4 amd made that match miserable for him. I think he was a junior. I ended up making it for the CIF (state) team duals. I lost but first experience. Now my jumior year I have 7-8 record. Yes not as good but I must work on it. I remember watching this video my freshman year, then sophomore year. Now my junior year. I have improved but haven't unlocked my full potential to become a champion. My coaches tell me "you can beat those dudes up, you just have to go out there and be dominant". In order to become a CIF state Champion I must be dominant. I must never underestimate my opponent for he has endured pain as well. But for the most part, I will be dominant.

Is this the first day these kids have been wrestling? Here in Iowa most freshman high schoolers have been wrestling since early grade school. My kids started in 2nd grade. I started in 3rd grade.

I lost literally all my matches in my sophomore year at 170 then this year i dropped down to 145. Every jv tournament i went to i placed top 4 and such. And in the conference tournament i placed 2nd at a jv1 tournament. Hard work does pay off

I kind of disagree with the whole “you have to be fired up to wrestle hard” thing. If you are taught and train hard, that’s how you will compete…just need to be able to tune out the distractions of “I’m tired, he looks jacked/is rlly good etc” and get locked in on wrestling

Wait your school didn't have the cheerleaders at wrestling meets? That's awful shame on them! . We always had the cheerleaders at out dual meets and any tournaments hosted by our school . Only time they weren't there is if they had special competitions on same day/night .
