"Usahay" is a very well-known classic Visayan song of the Cebuano language. Cebuano language (aka Bisaya, Visaya, Sebwano, Binisaya, Sugbuanon, etc.) is a Philippine language, and is the second most spoken native language in the Philippines after Tagalog, and excluding the Filipino national language which is based or founded on Tagalog. The word "tán-áw" or "tánáw" is a Cebuano word that means like "to see, to look, to watch", and a Tagalog or Filipino word "tanáw" also exists and means the same as in Cebuano, though the base or root words "kitâ" and "tingín" or "tingnán" are mostly and usually used in both Tagalog and in Filipino for "to see, to look, to watch". The Tagalog regional language (including the Filipino national language, which is based or founded on Tagalog) and the Cebuano language are quite closely related languages and share most similar words.

What is that glitter in your eyes, man? She's mine, dude. 😉 Usahay is a Visayan word for "Sometimes." Visayan is one of the many local languages in the Philippines. Born and raised in Cebu City, Philippines, it is actually Morissette's true native dialect (not Tagalog/Filipino). So proud of her singing this timeless, classic, Visayan song. English translation: "Usahay nagadamgo ako nga ikaw og ako nagkahigugmaay." (Sometimes I dream that you & I fell in love (again).) "Nganong damguhon ko ikaw? Damguhon sa kanunay sa akong kamingaw." (Why do I keep dreaming about you? Dreaming of you in my loneliness.) "Usahay magamahay ako nganong nabuhi pa ning kalibutan." (Sometimes I regret living in this world (now that I no longer have you).) "Nganong gi-ti-aw-ti-awan ang gugma ko kanimo, kanimo day?" (Why did you have to play with my feelings for you?)

The word that you probably misheard is "kalibutan" or sometimes spelled and written as "kalibotan". It is a Cebuano word and also a Tagalog and Filipino word that means like the "world, Earth, whole world, whole wide world, all of the earth/soil or lands, the entire geosphere, the face of the Earth or the crust, or the entire planet Earth". Probably, you misheard "p*ta" in the "-butan" part of "kalibutan". "P*ta" is an offensive, vulgar, disrespectful, and swear word or expression, but quite commonly used and heard among Filipinos as an expression of dismay, anger, hatred, and other stronger emotions and feelings, and with the real meaning quite getting lost. It is a Filipino word and also in most other languages of the Philippines, and it came from the Spanish word of the same spelling, pronunciation, and meaning. In Spanish though, its real meaning only applies to women or females, while they have "p*to" for men or males. In the Philippines, the word "p*ta" is applied to anyone of any sex or gender, and even to anything there is, exists, or you can think and imagine of. The word "puto", on the other hand, is a Filipino word for a common and native rice cake delicacy or to an array of related and some other unrelated rice cake delicacies and pastries. In Spanish, it is offensive, disrespectful, vulgar, and a swear word or expression, and it is the one I said that pertains to men or males, while "p*ta" is for women or females. In the Philippines and in the languages of the Philippines though, it is not an offensive, disrespectful, swear, and vulgar word or expression. Accordingly, it came or was derived from the Tamil language of southern India, and from the word "puttu", which is also a type of native rice delicacy or pastry in India.

Hey Guys @Pinoy Roots. New subscriber here. Usahay is a classic love song from the 1960s sung in Cebuano language (alternatively referred to as Bisaya). You definitely misheard it :-). It was not p*ta but "kalibutan" - meaning world. It was from the phrase "ning kalibutan" which means "in this world". It would be weird and disrespectful using cuss words in a "Christmassy" vibed love song.

Hey @Joseph Tate, you definitely don't know Cebuano language. There are two meanings of the Cebuano/Bisaya word "Kalibutan" depending on the context. Neither of them means alive ;-) 1.) kalibutan. Example: Wala 'koy kalibutan - meaning I do not know or I have no idea. 2.) Kalibutan. Example. " 'ning Kalibutan - meaning "in this World". You can check it in Google translate. Cebuano language language is available there ;-) PS: Alive means "Buhi" in Cebuano/Bisaya language.
