Bad fuel or fuel filter, and usually stater, would effect all 3 cylinders, though no filter as was the case could send clogs to some carburetors and not others, as is almost always the case and should usually be checked first to save time. Also, If you remove the plug wires at the upstream end, at the coil, you are far less likely to get zapped, though sometimes they are glued on.

@@marcelcorbeil615 Blocked Idle circuit perhaps - I usually open the carbs up and put them in an ultrasonic bath to remove the varnish from all of the internal parts..Many people seem to think that a rebuild kit always works but actually this does not remove all fuel varnish from the internal parts.

@bengoulding6963

Not likely; a warmed up (The one that was actually firing) cylinder will usually test tighter than cold cylinders. It should be said that "compression testing" is not really a reliable way to evaluate a rotating assembly. I have encountered many pistons with mangled piston skirts that "pass" a compression test. This is because the skirt/sleeve damage does not make it up to TDC in the cylinder. Leak down testing has been the industry standard for some time now.

Cliff Thomas I have a 35hp Johnson outboard, 81 model, starts and runs fine until you open it full throttle, then bogs down some, had it serviced at a boat dealer, run good and right until we got down the Lahr a bit, them bogged out a little and now doesn’t seem to be “opening” full throttle and cutting out a little every now and then, any suggestions Sir??? I carry my 4 yr old son out and don’t wanna chance it with him until I find out a little more. We only have 2 boat service places and they are booked, expensive and they didn’t catch the problem at service, so I’m a little nervous of them now 🙏🏻

So I learned from you in 15 min what it took nearly 15 years of boating and learning (the hard way) on my own. Granted there was no youtube when I first started doing boat maintenance. This video is short and to the point. And to anyone reading my comment I STRONGLY recommend a fuel stabilizer such as Startron or Stabil.
@deuteronimus750
@deuteronimus750 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Using stabilizer in any boat engine that might be unused for an extended period of time is a bad idea. It usually gums up the carburetor and fuel lines. To be sure that there isn't any damage all of the old gas should be drained out of both the engine and tanks.

I don't trust fuel stabilizer either, only way to make sure you don't have fuel drying out in the float bowl is to drain the float bowls for storage. That way there is nothing to dry out and gum everything up.

@sail4life
@sail4life Жыл бұрын
Bit late, but in case anyone was wondering. Each cylinder on this engine has its own carb. It is just a lottery which one plugs up first or last. So yes, on a two cylinder with only one carb like an 8 HP or a 9.9 the blocked carb will stop both cylinders from firing, but not on this one.

Hi Eric, I jut bought a 2007 25hp 4-stroke Mercury with EFI, and took it out yesterday for the first time. It would not seem to go very fast even though it is on a 12ft RIB, a relatively light boat. It struggled to get my buddy and I on plane... took like 20mins but we finally got on plane. Then when we slowed down and tried it again, it never happened.. it just felt like we we going 5-8mph with the bow way up on the air.. just no power at WOT. I also noticed the water coming out of the pee hole was no more than a couple of degrees warmer than the lake water... not warm at all.. and it runs fine, but it seems to not go past a certain rpm... almost like it's bogged down or somehow underpowered. Now I know this same boat would have no issues getting on plane with my '97 Johnson 15hp 2-stroke, but this 10yr newer 25hp EFI merc could not get my buddy and I on plane now matter what we did. It does not stall at any point, which is odd... as that would lead me to think it was a fuel issue... it just simply has not enough power under load. Any ideas what it might be? Thanks in advance!!
