Composer: George Frederick Pinto
Artist: Marek Toporowski (fortepiano)
This album contains the complete piano music by Pinto, presented by Piano Classics, a label of Brilliant Classics.
According to the impresario Salomon, had George Frederick Pinto not died at the age of 21, ‘England would have had the honour of producing a second Mozart’. Early in 1806 he probably succumbed to the effects of tuberculosis, much exacerbated by a dissolute lifestyle; Pinto’s ‘very questionable character, his habits of intemperance, and his somewhat lax principles,’ were notorious to his contemporaries.
And yet despite the praise of Salomon and Samuel Wesley, who remarked that ‘a greater musical Genius has not been known’, Pinto’s music fell into obscurity, only to be revived in the 1960s. Within the two or three years before his death he produced an astonishingly mature body of work centred on the instruments with which he was also a celebrated performer, the violin and the piano. Perhaps his most remarkable music is to be found in the piano sonatas recorded here by Marek Toporowski:, more particularly the two sonatas op.3 and the Grand Sonata in C minor ‘Inscribed to his Friend John Field’ (1803).
A Fantasia and Sonata in C minor, left unfinished and completed by Wesley and Wölfl; and three sets of Variations also match up to Pinto’s best standards. These works are blessed with beautiful and original ideas; although the influences of Mozart, Dussek and Cramer are clearly discernible there are many original touches, as well as astonishing anticipations of Beethoven, Schubert and even Chopin. Anyone with even a passing interest in Classical-era piano music will find Pinto’s highly inventive music worth further investigation.
Marek Toporowski plays three fortepianos, all of them modern copies of distinguished German models from the end of the 18th century.

george Frederick Pinto was an English performer and composer who died at 21 years old at the initiation of the XIX century. He was a child prodigy playing violin and piano. His early death made impossible for him to achieve a large body of music, so as to compare him to his contemporaries Mozart and Beethoven, It has been proposed, however, that his early efforts announced a serious career as a composer. His sonata opus 3 number 1 has been compared to the opus 110 of Beethoven, of course without the same density, but with similarities enough so as to ask oneself of what cusps of music should Pinto have reached if given more time. Thanks Brilliant Classics for recovering half forgotten brilliant musicians from the past

@Karla Kirkpatrick You are right, few composers were women. However, very many were great singers of piano and violin players. In all probability social and cultural factors were responsible.

I' ve not a great acquaintance with English repertoire but This Composer seems to me probably the best instrumentalist in England before the arrival of Sterndale Bennett... Great Music, well written for the Pianoforte ( or better for the Fortepiano...) and the E- flat minor (what an astonishing choice in the '700!) Sonata in particular is, to me, a real Masterpiece. Beautiful Performances, a really interesting discovery! Thanks a lot, Brilliant!

I'm all for period instrument performances, but one thing I've never been able to get used to is the early fortepiano use in recordings. It just sounds awful (and I've tried listening to it a LOT - didn't help).

'Sounds awful' is most intemperate and unreasonable. Have you never been in a shop or cafe and been tortured by the noise played? I have often been tortured by such noises in branches of Lloyd's Bank, to the extent that I have been desperate to get out, and have heard many customers complain. Even allowing for all reasonable differences of opinion this sound is absolute heaven in comparison.

Such lovely light classical works, what a shame it's played on the ugly sounding period instrument! What composer would want their hard work played on inferior instruments when the choice could be a beautiful concert grand? I don't understand this! The pianist worked so LONG and so HARD to be able to play this and then waste all that on an ugly-sounding OLD piano!
@musicyh
@musicyh 2 жыл бұрын
Early pianos are not "inferior". They just have different aesthetics, because the aesthetics of the 18th and early 19th centuries are vastly different from the aesthetics of later. Instruments changed with changes in aesthetic preferences over the centuries. The modern concert grand is excellent at singing lines but not the intricacies of speech inflections that classical and early romantic works were literally based on. Period instruments reflect the musical tastes and styles of their respective time periods, and to just write them off as inferior prototypes of modern instruments because you don't like how they sound, is to practically announce that you don't care about the sounds and aesthetics that the composers had in mind. Composers wrote for the instruments available to them, and they wrote their music in such a way that it would highlight the strengths and acoustical properties of those instruments. They didn't go, "oh I'll write my music for an instrument 200 years in the future, because my current instruments sound absolutely horrible." Literally if you have even just played a period instrument once in your life, you would see how the music seems to play itself, because it is so much easier to get the articulations and expressive markings in the score to sound the way they need to sound, when the instrument actually works with you instead of against you. Pianists have to work much harder on the modern concert grand to produce the speech-based musical style of the late 1700s and early 1800s, because the modern concert grand is designed to sing, at the expense of almost everything else. The pianos of the classical period were designed to imitate the inflections of speech, and the pianos of the early romantic period combined speech-like inflections with a slightly more singing quality. Neither of them were designed to primarily sing, the way the modern concert grand is designed to. People play music on period instruments because they want to understand the musical style and aesthetics of the time period more. It is your choice what kind of sound you prefer, and there is nothing wrong with preferring the singing tone of the modern grand, but to say you don't understand why anyone would want to play "ugly-sounding old pianos" is the epitome of ignorance.

What are we trying to do here? Recreate a piano from mid 1800s? The sound of this piano is awful, and it's out of tune. Sounds like a saloon in the west, a performance which would have actually been awesome to see.
