My LaserKaraoke is having difficulties with the automatic side changing. You know, the usual laserdisc things...
The rubbing was bad enough that when there was something on top of the LaserKaraoke then it wouldn't be able to deflect the case out enough and it would get stuck. That was the root of the problem.
But for now the problem is solved. It seems really weird to me that this is happening in this unit. I was thinking when the side change starts the procedure should be:
1. Dock trasport in rotator
2. Lift carraige up
3. Rotate tansport
4. Undock transport
But instead it does 1,3,3,2,3,4 which makes no sense.

Ah yeah.. the "image" on the "blank" side of the disc was the LaserDisc Turtle. I remember well going to a RadioShack once back in the day and they had an LD machine set up on a projector with that showing. Clearly they stuck the disc in wrong way up and couldn't be arsed with flipping it around. Those were the days.

Man, that's what I love about your videos - you don't take any shortcuts if you can help it. Me, I'd have just epoxied a bumper in place where you did your test clamp and called it a day. Love your channel, dude.

A Laser Disk Karaoke Machine? Well, one who has learned a bit of the whole Laser Disk History and that of how popular Karaoke is in Japan. I am more amazed you found one. As they were extremely popular and lasted well after the Laser Disk was discontinued completely. Far longer than the movie media and even gaming. As it did one thing well. Far better before the DVD or CD took hold and replaced it. Could select what you want. Though issue with the Laser Disk. It is all Analog with Audio and Image. While the DVD And CD were Digital. Which means that one of your CDs could store MORE information than a Laser Disk could ever do. Plus have a better sound quality...if your sound system is good enough lol.

But th laserdisk is very VERY tolerant to damage. Search in youtube by cutting a reccord into a laserdisk. The guy uses a turntable to engrave music into a lasedisk, played it back into the turntable, and then incredibly the laserdisk held its data (most of it) and could play it back, while cds and dvds die just because of a scratch.

Well, yes. That is true. You are right. This maybe the reason why they may have lasted they have as a Karaoke Machine. As it takes little to no effort to keep it working.

I don't know if Karaoke laser disks encoded their audio in analog or PCM digital. But I would expect the mid 80's and beyond would be LPCM digital, as that's when digital audio came into being on laser disk. From what I remember laser disk uses the same 16 Bit 44.1kHz LPCM encoding scheme as CD's used; makes sense since they could use all the same chip sets already on the market for CDs. So the audio should be as good as a CD if encoded as PCM digital audio. Later Laser Disks used one of the analog tracks for encoding AC-3 Dolby digital. With later DTS audio using the two channels normally used for LPCM digital audio . I think in this case they would leave the last analog channel for a mono mix for compatibility, normally used for commentary tracks when the other analog channel was carrying the AC-3 RF carrier. Considering how they started out with just two analog audio tracks in the beginning (using CX noise reduction), by the end they managed to pack in a lot of digital encoding options and even commentary tracks, just like DVD's would later use.

Love your content! A similar, and maybe superior(?) Karaoke model to this one would be the Pioneer CLD-D604 or Yamaha CDV-W901 (both same). It has that U-track you were looking for, quick side change, easy maintenance and AC3 out! (demodulator required). They just don't come with the quick search button row atop the face (who cares... right?) Only drawback is there is a brittle plastic piece with a pin that follows the U-track. It was upgraded to a better plastic material by Pioneer. It's located on the carriage assembly, around the motor's front and worm gear. "Holder" Yamaha part number: CX678250 (can be had for $2.20... wow!) "M Holder" Pioneer part number: VNL1637 (VNL1779 looks exact and can be 3D printed) Back in 2011 it cost me $20+shipping direct from Pioneer. If you get one of these models; greasing the tracks, new drive rubber-band for the drawer, and that carriage assembly part should be inspected... maybe make/get a new one and tape it to the inside of the unit, just in case there is a day when the old one fails. OH WOW! in this research, i just found AliExpress has the whole optical block for this unit too!... hopefully I'll never need it. I rid of my whole LaserDisc collection years ago. Only kept a few and use it as a CD player (loud.. the playback mech is loud for simple use)

I think the problem is the carriage is rotating twice. It should only rotate once.

Yepp. Go down, rotate once, go up. Seems it detects that it did not rotate and does it again without lowering the whole thing again. Probably a bug in the "try again" routine =)

I think it might be some end switch problem. I really don't think it is supposed to rotate twice.

You should see the "dance" that happens on the one that also plays DVDs! There is a second head mechanism for the DVD laser that has to get parked out of the way when using the LD. Mine had an issue with that plastic gear track where it had warped a little over time; a little hot snot fixed it.

I have a version of that machine with s-video out. Got the same mini karaoke LD and complimentary Tenchi Muyou LD, microphone, the works. Has a transport problem, too. It’s like mine has trouble latching onto the disc. It tries a few times, then gives up and ejects the disc. It eventually seats properly and plays... eventually. I’ve never left it open to see exactly what’s going on, but I’ll get around to it one of these days.

Nice fix actually, i would just have cut a whole on top of it, and regret really hard after finishing it. Btw is there a word for these improvised fixes in english? I've heard "jerry rig", "macgyverism", but never a propper word, like in portuguese "gambiarra", a universal word in the language to describe that.

@iroll 6 жыл бұрын
A lot of the words you are looking for are going to be regional, as opposed to universal. Rig, by itself, is universal. Other universal phrases might sound overly formal, like "improvised fix/solution." Bodge, kludge, macgyver, jerry-rig, etc. all tend to point to who/where the speaker is. In some places the "jerry" (a diminutive for German) in "jerry-rig" might be replaced with racist terms for other people.
@Dant2142

I guess he was implying that "improvised fix" is about as close to a universal term that there is. English is weird.

LMAO I freaked out when I saw this video because I have the EXACT same laserdisc player and then you mentioned the laser flipping mechanism getting stuck and I freaked out even more because mine has the same issue! Unfortunately the similarities ended there. Mine's issue is nothing to do with the carrier raising too high, the mechanism comes to a dead stop half-turn and the whole machine freezes up. You can't stop it, the power button doesn't even do anything, all you get is the A--->B animation on the front display and the stressed out whirring of some motors. The only way to return it to its original state is to unplug it and plug it back in. It's able to return the laser to its original position. I think my issue is probably some sort of stripped or cracked gear or other plastic bit, definitely more complicated to fix @.@

What's the point of having an LaserDisc Player with S-Video Out? Aren't LaserDiscs already encoded in NTSC or PAL?
@eduardoavila646
@eduardoavila646 6 жыл бұрын
Better video quality. From what i've heard, s-video has a way better quality than composite
@CommodoreFan64
@CommodoreFan64 6 жыл бұрын
S-Video helps separate the Luma, and coma for a bit less fuzzy of a picture, because with composite you are sending all the data down a single small copper wire.

@chainedenintenloup

Composite is a lossy format, even if it's on composite on the disc, when the decoders sends the signal thru omposite, you'll have an other layer of loss in the picture.

The only thing that the S-Video output on laserdisc players adds to the image is a comb filter, and a very primitive one at that. At the time, it would have been great but now, you might as well not bother. The composite will be superior.

@@narunetto Your probably right about just leaving it as composite, and letting the TV's (3D) comb filter with DSP do a better job then the analog comb filter they had back then. You probably get less artifacts that way.
