Greetings. First I’d like to let your know that I’m a wildlife field biologist and I’ve worked as an orthodontist (study of wild birds) for the majority of the last 40+ years. I’ve studied other wildlife as well and currently am studying suburban wildlife and the effects of urban sprawl and wildlife habitat loss, which drives wildlife into suburban neighborhoods. Thank you or providing food and water for your resident birds. Aho! Regarding your Missouri Meerschaum, it’s my favorite Corn Cob Pipe… one of my very favorite of all pipes. When I was a boy, my grandfather and I would trout fish in the Black Hills in South Dakota… spend all day, and often several days fishing. And he bought me my first pipe, a Missouri Meerschaum cob pipe when I was 8 years old… many native children smoked them… I know it’s something that would be frowned upon by most people today… but it was part of our Lakota ways. I was making pipes when I was 10. But my grandfather preferred corn cob & briar pipes over our traditional hardwood pipes. Anyway, I’ve always had a corn cob pipe since then. This pipe Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman, is hands down my favorite. It’s smokes as good as any of my Peterson, Savinelli, Dunhill or any other pipe. Missouri Meerschaum and Dr. Grabow were always my grandfather’s favorite pipes, and he also had a few Keywoodies. New subscriber.. 👍🏼

I've only been smoking pipes for around 2 months now. Funny, the first cob I picked up, and coincidentally the first non basket pipe I picked up was a Country Gentleman...and it was by accident! One of the local tobacco shops just so happened to have one and I really just enjoyed the way it looked. I have since obtained a few briars including a Mr. Brog, Erikson, and a Rossi Vittoria. The plastic stem soon wore out because I tend to clench a little aggressively (something a forever stem has happily remedied). Despite having some excellent briars, this pipe is probably right up there with my Rossi for how good it smokes! Highly recommended for new pipe smokers and seasoned pipe smokers alike.

Hello from Spain. I live in a town between Barcelona and Valencia, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. You know that the pipes are made from the root of the briar, "Erica arborea", which grows in sandy and rocky soils, here in the Mediterranean regions. I really have been loving my 2 cobs but after a few months they took on a sour/bitter taste - I deep cleaned them and it mitigated it, but it seems it may be permanent. Have you ever had any issues like this with cobs? It isn't burnt out from the looks of it. If I smoke slow enough it is fine, but any heavy puffs have a bad tinge. Some say cobs are disposable and when this happens to toss them or get a new one, and some say they've been smoking them for 30 years, which I can't imagine. I've tried sun drying it , etc. But I don't think it's ever going to be as good as it was when it was new. Either way, my briar has been getting a lot more love now :D Cheers!
@hobbitonpiper Жыл бұрын
Bitterness from MM cobs often comes from the hardwood dowel that goes into the bottom of the bowl before it is properly charred, but that certainly shouldn’t take months. Improper care could cause sourness/bitterness over time as well. It sounds like in your case it may be best to start fresh.
@towhee89 Жыл бұрын
@@hobbitonpiper well I've been trying to smoke slower and last night I did this with them both and had no issues they both tasted great. And brought out a different dimension with Carter Hall. I've been running into trouble especially with Sutliff aromatics finding flavor and I realized I've been smoking too hard. It's tough but I am finally learning how to sip and never let the pipe get hot.
@towhee898 ай бұрын
@@hobbitonpiperI ordered one of these should be here tomorrow! Can't wait. I ended up using rubbing alcohol to clean the bottom of the cob. The shank or dowel doesn't allow the bottom tar and ash to be properly cleaned so instead of tossing them or removing the dowel I just poured a bit of isopropyl in the bottom of the bowl. It worked like a charm and other than discoloring to the outside no issue. The cobs always taste awful the first day while charring the dowel.
@brianquilty6873 жыл бұрын
I love a good cob, but I've noticed that they are finishing the outside of the bowls with a lacquer that seems to make them smoke hotter than the "open" unfinished cobs. So I have stopped buying them. Don't try Boswell's Apple Strudel, because it doesn't smell or taste anything like apples. I love Box Turtles, they are so interesting. @@hobbitonpiper I also enjoy my corn cobs without. So here’s a follow up question....Do you use filters in other pipes or do you go without?
@hobbitonpiper3 жыл бұрын
@@JS-pk5wt I prefer without. For me personally I’ve found it can reduce airflow, cause some bitterness, and they reduce some of the flavor nuances I’m normally able to pull from blends. However, some do prefer to use filters to reduce the potential for tongue bite and to prevent various gunk from reaching your mouth, etc. To each their own preference! :)
