Spent the day practicing a common pipeline weld test - 12" .250 wall pipe I cut into small pups and welded on a 45 degree angle. I also give you my advice on what type of truck you need to put together a welding rig for any oil and gas work.

Love your videos man, I'm a new subscriber. I've been soaking in all the knowledge I can about pipe pipeline and pipeline welders. I'm looking to get into it this year whether it be as a helper or however I can. I currently have 6 years of experience welding pipe in refineries and had a few questions for you if you could answer for me if you have the chance. First of all my welder is a 2016 Miller Bobcat250 it's a gasser is that gonna be big enough you think? Also I hear a lot that pipelines use mainly xx10 type of rod is that true? What rod did you use in this video was that 6010 or 8010?

The dually has good flotation and traction on the muddy right of ways. I did sanitary process tig ( food service ) with Dynasty's powered by a 11,500.watt generator. Inverter all the way Saves much weight so a smaller truck can be doable. No off road in the winery's. With the full electric vehicles on the horizon soon will only need an XMT 350 to make a welding " rig ".

Worked for someone but due to a layoff I Went out on my own recently. I have a 1500. That’s all I could afford. Put air bags on it for $300. Helps carry the weight. Have a trailblazer, jacks, a toolbox with everything I need. I’ll get a 2500 later (diesel) and a big boy welder like a SA300 but for now that’s all I can afford

Quick question, did the USDOT start making welders who cross state lines get DOT numbers if you had a 1 ton rig? And a medical card? When this was going around a few years ago, some welders were opting for a 3/4 ton to avoid this hassle.

8 ply tires Don't, in my experience, hold up on single, if the rightaway is rough. I had to run 10 ply. They are expensive enough to negate the savings of the extra tires.

Austin: Do you cut your pups\coupons and grind the angle by hand or do you use a pipe beveler? Would like to see someone cut a pipe bevel by hand. I know most angles are 37.5 degrees but to freehand would be a chore I would think.
@arosswelding
@arosswelding 6 жыл бұрын
no we don't put the bevel on by hand. we use a beveling machine or band and crawler. i have plans on making a video on setting up both of these and a couple tips to go along with.
@bjen2005
@bjen2005 6 жыл бұрын
I guess my question is; what if I didn't have $2000 to drop on a pipe beveler at the current time. Been looking at craigslist and everything I see is $600/800 for the Mathey Dearman then another $500 for a long straight torch and coupons are expensive. That leaves hand beveling as the next best alternative. What's your take?

There tom waters pipeline glasses, we wear them because they fit under a pancake without any problems, an they dont fog up as bad as normal safety glasses, a lot of gas company's require u to wear safety glasses under your hood. So thats why we wear those kind of glasses

anyone scratch build their trucks? I been a car guy & poor too long, but prices I see for trucks freak me out, & I say ill build my own, have an old 1980 GMC 3/4 ton with 1 ton rear, dual rear wheels, 2wd, going tomorrow to hopefully pick up a granny gear 4 speed & transfer case with driveshafts, dirt cheap, & got to scrounge for a front differential with same gears as my rear, & already wheeled & dealed for a big block Cadillac engine, need to pick up soon to replace the worn out small block it has in it I figure I can build truck dirt cheap, compared to buying, but I still got to learn everything, in pipelining, but I do own a lot of tools & equipment, I have a vintage Hobart Pipeliner welder.

With the 3/4 ton trucks the frame will crack after 20 years of pulling around a full weld kit and a small trailer "that's if your vary easy on it"... the engines will give out a time or three over those years... get a frame for a 1 ton truck cheep from a scrapper and cut/weld it to fit under a 1/2ton truck cab and cut/weld the suspension to keep it looking like a 1/2 ton truck... if your welds are good the frame of that truck will make you all the money.
