So here's a super neat J-3 Cub with an OS FS-48 Surpass engine flying at the Tehachapi Crosswinds RC Club! This plane was restored by Rodger Hecht and is being flown by his son Brent. Unfortunately, we don't know the manufacturer of this great old model, so if you think you do, please post it up in the comments. Cheers everyone and happy landings!

Thanks for the vid John. I love that cub, flies great and with the on board glow driver she stays running at idle. Brent does a great job of throwing it around. I like doing touch and goes with it.

@@JustwingitRC Thank you. I've been buying ARF kits lately because I don't have time to build but love to fly. This spring I have 4 airplanes to maiden: 1. Hostetler 108.5 inch WS Bonanza DLE 85 2. Phoenix models Stinson reliant DLE 35RA 3. Cessna 182 CMP PRO DLE 20 4. VMAR 80 INCH CUB (Engine not decided) So I'll definitely have my hands full. Thanks for the info about the cub. I've never heard of VMAR and don't recall ever seeing one fly, but I'll take your word it flies well! Smooth skies fellow aviator!

@@sophiasocal68 Wow my friend! Hands full indeed, all of those models sound awesome, my kind of planes! Those aircraft are all classics and should fly very well. I have a friend who has the VMAR Cub, and even the Twin Otter (twin electric), and both fly very well. Fair winds and happy landings to you!

Oh man, that is so cool! These old planes always invoke fond memories, and I'm glad to share them. Your electric conversion sounds awesome! What size motor, ESC, battery and prop are you going to run? These are usually built pretty heavy (old school). Cheers my brother, stay warm up there 😎👍🤠🤙🇨🇦

@@JustwingitRC I installed a 5055 700kv with a 200amp SC. It is equipped with a 4 blade 14". Static tests show a hover at just over half throttle. 1600+ watts. I have named it "Cubzilla". I'll post a flight once the weather and time allow. Best wishes brother.

Man John I love Cubs! There were so many 80" 1/5 kits. Great planes, Goldberg, Sig. My guess is a Goldberg. Both the GP and Sig are more scale. Nice flying by Brent. I love flying with Rudder! Thanks for sharing!
@JustwingitRC
@JustwingitRC 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there my friend! I figured you'd like this one knowing your affinity for Cubs! You know, someone mentioned that over on RCG and I completely forgot about the old Goldberg kits, and yes, it does have that "look" about it! I recall Goldberg had both: some decidedly "sport scale" and some that were a bit more in line with the full size. I also agree with you that the GP and the Sig were more scale for sure. It's nice to be able video someone like Brent who can demonstrate the difference rudder makes just by asking him to do so! All the best to you brother!

If i had to guess id say it was a great planes. It been in our club for years going from one guy to the next. The side windows were molded . I got attack by Hornets or yellowjackets while trying to land and crashed it hard. Had to rebuild the whole front from the first side windows all the way forward. It was just too fun to throw it away.

This certainly looks like an "old" Hangar 9, model HAN1500 circa 1994 or so. I still have the one I purchased new in the late 90s. It was the first ARF I ever bought. Great flying plane but the one-piece wing is a bit cumbersome to transport. They released a slightly more scale version with a two-piece wing shortly after I got mine, kinda wish I waited for that one lol. I haven't flown mine in years, this vid makes me want to dust it off again.
@JustwingitRC

Thanks for checking in! Yes, it certainly could be the Hangar 9, and for sure it was a very popular ARF back in the day! You should dust yours off, these make for nice flyers! Blue skies my friend!

HI! I recently purchased a similar size cub, but the struts are a major pain to deal with. I noticed you don't have struts on this one and are flying it pretty "aggressively". Any concerns about the wings folding or anything like that without the struts? any advice generally speaking in relation to that.
@JustwingitRC
@JustwingitRC Жыл бұрын
I believe this Cub model was originally designed and built without struts, even though the full scale obviously has them. If your model has them (which it sounds like it does), I'd encourage you to keep them on as it probably needs them for structural integrity. I hope this helps, all the best to you!
