My flying got started in a J3 cub, back then it was just fun to fly, my instructor taught me loops, spins, emergency landings, which paid off years later, a grass field for a runway and she made me land more than fly, like I said it paid off later on and I am very grateful for that. Knowing what to do and not to panic is key to a long flying career. I landed on every gravel road and farmers field in New Hampshire, she'd chop my power and say "land" Thanks for a great flying video, love the Cub!

Nice flying Emerson! I own a 1940 J-3 and would never have the balls to do anything other than wingovers. That is some very nice aviating. Just doing those maneuvers at all would be a challenge in a 65 horse Cub. Doing them well, all while flying close to the ground? Much respect. I know how much practice you put in to get there, sir.

Very cool video, I just purchased N98699, 1946 J3 85hp. When I get the feel of it a little better, I would like to do some limited aerobatics. I did some in a Citabria back in the seventies. My son had a Grumman AA1A for 8 years and I have a lot of time in it, but even spins are prohibited in the AA1A. He sold it in 2008. Great to get back to basics!

Great show!👌 In case you wanter you can always try to make aerobatic maneuvers with P-18 in a Flight Sim. For my next practice I will definitely try this maneuver at 2:39

Seen a someone in a float plane doing loops out on the lake the other day. Looked and sounded like a cub but had no idea cubs could do loops. Let alone any float plane. Would the pontoons add a lot of stress to the airframe when performing the loop?
@bardenaviation
@bardenaviation 10 ай бұрын
That's quite the aerobatics, never heard of anyone doing that before. Adds to both weight and drag having floats for sure. Interesting!

I made some comments 9 months ago when I first bought my Cub. since then I have about 35 hours on it even though I didn't fly it for 3 months due to a hip replacement. I am getting very comfortable with it, flying in ever increasing wind conditions and have done a few loops, spins and Hammerhead turns. My son who is a CFI, ATP and Captain on Caravan Amphibians doesn't want me to do aerobatics in a 70 year old Cub. He thinks the wings might fall off. I don't think a spin puts very much stress on the airframe. , when I did loops in a Citabria in the 70's I pulled 3 G's. Maybe he has something. Do you think there is a danger doing light aerorbatics in a stock 85 HP?

Would be best to have a trusted AP check your plane over really well, get some advise from a trusted Aerobatic instructor as well before getting too crazy there. While the J3 is great for this, the maneuvers if not done correctly will lead to air frame issues... Glad to hear the hours are building up, have fun!

That's some really great advice you got there, Jim. I would never do acro in my 77 year old airplane. Not only because of the age, but as mentioned above, botched maneuvers can quickly lead to excessive loads. One of the many reasons never, ever to do acro in non-acro aircraft. (Although the J-3 is legal due to it's certification.)

This might be a newbie question, but is there any modifications need to do aerobatic maneuvers? any structural reinforcements for the G's you pull and push? Can any piper cub do loops?
@bardenaviation
@bardenaviation 7 жыл бұрын
Each plane is different, as this is an "Experimental" modifications have been made to allow for the loads. Stock or certified planes have "G" force ratings as to how many positive and negative "g's" the air frame can handle. A good place to start is with the IAC - www.iac.org/getting-started-aerobatics - or visit a local airport to see if there is some aerobatic instruction available. Great question!

I thought a parachute was mandatory when doing aerobatics.
@Mike-01234
@Mike-01234 7 жыл бұрын
Parachute usage is covered in 14 CFR 91.307. Section (c) of this regulation applies to aircraft during aerobatic maneuvers. It states: (c) Unless each occupant of the aircraft is wearing an approved parachute, no pilot of a civil aircraft carrying any person (other than a crewmember) may execute any intentional maneuver that exceeds -- (1) A bank of 60 degrees relative to the horizon; or (2) A nose-up or nose-down attitude of 30 degrees relative to the horizon." Notice the words OTHER THAN CREWMEMBER(S) means if you're a crewmember and no passengers you are not required have have a Parachute. The reality is low level aerobatics never going to be able to get out in time anyway a BRS would be better has worked when RANS broke a wing off he was able to deploy the BRS riding the plane down with it. www.eaa.org/en/eaa/aviation-communities-and-interests/homebuilt-aircraft-and-homebuilt-aircraft-kits/frequently-asked-questions/parachutes-during-aerobatics

I do acro in my J-5 Cub ....But it has new spars heavy duty struts and I have been flying for 40 years doing acro . I have a portable g meter and in a barrel roll and loops I pull 2.5 -3 g's and it is when you blow a maneuver that you over stress the airplane . I will admit that I am playing with fire and you are too . I had a friend who lost a wing in a J-3 and death is reality sometimes bites you in the ass in these 70+ year old airplanes . It would be much wiser for all not to do aerobatics in a Cub . Pilots a lot more proficient than you and me have been killed flying like this.
