Pirates of the Coast - A great, colorful Italian costume epic with Barker as a ship captain who is pitted against a crafty pirates. There are some interesting turnabouts, however, with plot twists a-plenty.

"In this exciting, colorful Italian 1960 swashbuckling costume drama, Lex Barker plays Commander Luis Monterrey, a man who is seemingly successful and powerful (although an interesting early scene makes clear that although Monterrey is allowed to attend important social functions and mingle with the rich, he is NOT one of them, and is expected to "know his place" in society), representing Spain as a naval officer in the mid-1500s. You might be expecting a usual captain hero vs. bad pirates plot based on the first twenty minutes, but the film makes an interesting about-face, and then goes in a very different direction, which I won't give away. Barker handles the role convincingly, and is paired against, then with, pirate head Livio Lorenzon. One of Lorenzon's associates is played by Black American expatriate actor John Kitzmiller. The film could use some more swordplay, but overall, it's an exciting, well-played and well-photographed genre-film, for those who like Italian costume adventures. And the charismatic Lex Barker once again shows why he became such a popular actor in Europe in the late 50s and early 60s. This film was once a staple on US local TV twenty years ago."

A lot of whiners comments. Appreciate the production values, period costumes, dialogue that accounts for the context of super power conflicts and loyalty to country over rides the temptations of conspiracy and greed. Loyalty comes down to how to treat women, and least not forget, the one woman who turned the "tide," of betrayal. More honor than some men really are cowards.

59y/m I'm a sucker for pirate movies, this one is new to me even though it's older than I am. Hell, I even liked Cutthroat Island and Yellowbeard. Let's see how this turns out. This turns out like a live action version of the Sega Genesis game Sid Meier's Pirates Gold. I played the hell out that game. I wish I still had it. Good movie, cheesy but good.

Lex Barker is a real German cut. I do not know much about him but he looks totally German. Swaggering good looks and solid build with those sharp lines and perfect handsomeness. It was a good film, and I wonder how the lady in question could resist him.

Lex was actually an American actor he played in a lot of German movies such winnetou and old shatterhand which probably was he most famous role. He also played Tarzan and many other roles

As the size of boats grew, so did the steering oar, making it much easier to tie a boat up to a dock on the side opposite the oar. This side became known as larboard, or “the loading side.” Over time, larboard-too easily confused with starboard-was replaced with port. As such, around the early to mid-19th century, “port” popularly replaced “larboard” for this reason. At first many just made the switch on their own, but by 1844 the change from “larboard” to “port” was made official in the British navy and two years later in the U.S. Navy and has pretty much become ubiquitous since.Larboard sounds similar to starboard and in 1844 the Royal Navy ordered that port be used instead. The United States Navy followed suit in 1846. Larboard continued to be used well into the 1850s by whalers.

Turn right , turn left a little bit. They did mention starboard a couple times. Could be some of the studio hearts were confused by the naval talk. It was said that “ England was jealous of Spain’s wealth! “ and wanted some of it.” That was absolutely true. This is entertaining. View it that way!

The description above is a century off, it mistakenly says 1500s when it was the 1600s, the costuming alone shows that. Also, in the film the model of the ship the hero used during the attack on the port appeared too close to shore.

At 51:15 it looks like the extra actor playing a soldier wearing a helmet ran too far to the left to make sense for the story. That clip should have been edited out.

Check out Frenchman's Creek (1998 version). It has a great ship to shore battle that is very realistic, mostly cuz it not only has lots of cannon fire, but also suspense, whilst they reload. In most movies they never seem to run out of loaded cannon. Cutthroat Island is another awesome movie with several battle scenes, also without gore.

Flag is wrong. From 1506 till 1842 the Spanish Flag was the Cross of Burgundy both for military purposes as well as to represent the spanish empire; a red saltire resembling two crossed, roughly-pruned (knotted) branches, on a white field.

That is definitely NOT Lex Barker's voice. The dubbing is terrible! I lasted exactly 8 minutes and 8 seconds before I was getting nauseous and deleted it
