Deer season offers Kentucky hunters a variety of firepower options. Farmer opts for a modern pistol. Although Farmer's .44 magnum pistol is a bit less common than the bow or a rifle, it is up to the task of taking a doe. Follow his adventure near the Shelby-Franklin county line.

Good hunt , you did well ! My .44 mag groups 210 and 220 grain Nosler very very well , mostly I use the Hornady XTP bullets ! If I want less meat damage I use lead hard cast bullets! If you would like better control and accuracy, one : use the tip of your trigger finger , don’t got past the first joint ! A lot of folks do this and don’t realize it , do not have your trigger finger inside the trigger guard when you are cocking any firearm , there is plenty of time once the firearm is cocked !

Great video! I had the same idea years ago and decided to have one of my revolvers drilled and tapped and install a rail and red dot. The revolver was a Taurus 686 7 shot 357 Mag with a 6' barrel and it was stainless. i didn't feel too bad about drilling it being a less expensive revolver that I got used like new. I too wanted it for the challenge, and fun at the shooting range. It was awesome because without the red dot the 100yd gong would get obscured from the front post, not anymore,,,haha..That was so much fun nailing targets at 100+yds. I figured a high energy round from Buffalo Bore etc. and sight it to that and I would be set for some deer hunting. Figured keep the shots within 50yds for the energy. Well never got to do it as I traded it for another rifle. Now my son is hunting finally as he is old enough and I tag along. i think its time to build another hunting revolver....Maybe a Ruger GP100 is what I am thinking, but I cringe at having work done to it,,hey its only money. Now 44mag or another 357mag...I know everyone thinks bigger is better, but I have trust in 357mag..Very versatile cartridge when loaded for what you are after. I think it looks more fun than bow hunting myself.

Stu650Zuk I am a handgun hunter also. 357 cal is considered the minimal handgun hunting cal,. for deer; that is if you keep your shots within 25-50 yards. Try to find a S&W or a Ruger single action in 41 magnum. It's pretty powerful for deer and black bear with the right bullet. Since you reload that should be no problem coming up with an accurate load for your gun. I shoot a S&W 686 .44 mag with a 6 in barrel and a 4 x Leupold scope. Very accurate. I also have a scoped TC 10 inch barrel in 480 Ruger/.475 Linebaugh. Absolutely devastating on hogs and black bear. Good luck on your endeavor and happy hunting.

@Bubbars last timei checked you're supposed to leave it in a cooler filled with ice and empty the water that is created by the ice melting, also fill up the coller of ice every day. The water help to drain the blood from the meat. After a couple days of that you can freeze it.

The holes in the barrel allow gases to escape. Those gases in turn force the barrel down somewhat to help the shooter recover from the recoil and acquire the target faster. It doesn't look like they did much in the video for this gun, but without the holes the gun would've jumped a lot more.

They redirect some of the gas produced by the propellant in the opposite direction to counter-act some of the recoil. It's called a recoil brake.

I enjoy pistol hunting for large game also. I shoot a S&W 460 XVR with 8 3/8" barrel. I have a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x32 mounted on top of it. It is a little bit heavy for many people but I always carry some shooting sticks with me or make sure I have a decent rest if I am going to be taking a long shot. It is a large gun, but I have a big bandolier holster and it makes packing in and out of the woods nothing more than a nature hike. I choose the 460 so I would have the option of shooting the 454 or 45 Colt if I wanted to. Happy and safe hunting everybody.

Thank You Sir for your service to our country plus that was excellent shooting. You should be able to take a deer up to 100 yrds with a little practice, the 44 Mag is certainly up to it. Having said that I also am planning on hunting deer and elk here in Idaho with my 44 Mag, It is a Taurus Mod. 44 I love shooting it.

Good shot, i can hardly hit at 5 yards with my dad's HW 45, i'm more of a rifleman but i can see why pistol hunting is easier with a small firearm and i think any meat you can kill and prepear yourself is better than anything at the store.
