I cite the 1989 Highlight Reel to demonstrate Pete's unique abilities. Pete could see everything on the court and throw a great pass leading to an easy basket despite a good defensive play that forced him to dribble behind his back. He deceived his opponent by appearing to lose control of the ball and made a spectacular pass-not to be fancy- but deceptive. He used the good defensive move of his opponent against him.

I'm not comparing Pistol to anybody else. All I'm saying is: 68 points from all over the court between the baseline and the half-court line. Dropping bombs from downtown before the three-point line existed. The man was certainly one of the very very best. RIP Pistol.

After 50 games in the 1978 season, a season in which he had a good chance of winning his second scoring title in a row and had led the Jazz to a 9 game winning streak and was leading the expansion Jazz to their first playoff spot, Maravich suffered a knees injury from which he never fully recovered.

When Pete played for New Orleans Pete was the only guy on that team - save for two short years with Truck Robinson - who could really play. In the games Pete played for the Jazz (excluding the games he missed), their record was 93-92. The Jazz were one of the most successful expansion teams in NBA history.

Remember this game well, as a kid. My Knick fan Moms almost had a heart attack! This performance was against an aging Knick team plus some young bums! He doesn't do that in '70 or '73! I'll assure you that. However, he was still a wizard of a ballplayer.

Pete actually did lead the league in scoring in 1977. 31.5 points/game without a 3 point line. In 1978 Pete was again contending for the scoring title when after a 9 game winning streak he got hurt with what proved to be a career ending injury. Pete's injury came when he was just entering his prime and the Jazz would have made the playoffs. The expansion Jazz were actually 93-92 in games Pete played. His teams won 82% of the games in which Pete scored over 40. Pete the best 1 0n 5 player ever

Watch the "1989 Highlight Reel" on KZfaq. Pete is on the break and someone tries to steal the ball. Pete dribbles behind his back and appears to not have control as he dribbles away from the middle. Lou Hudson continues to run towards the basket and Pete, never looking up and moving away from the play, flips the ball over his shoulder and Hudson takes the pass and scores. Unique.

As Spike Lee said of Maravich in his book "The Best Seat in the House": His game was vertical, horizontal, but mostly magical...and no one could stop him. This doesn't mean he was a better all around player than Jordon. But as his former team mate Lou Hudson stated, "...skills wise, he was the best ever".

In the game in which Pete scored 68 against the Knicks,(a game in which the announcer has previously stated "No shot is too long for the Pistol" Pete is at the top of the key (beyond 3 pt range holding the ball with one hand);because he is so far away the man guarding him doesn't expect him to shoot and yet Pete shoots and makes this very long shot.

(76-77) The following season was Maravich's finest as a professional. He saw action in 73 games and led the NBA in scoring with a career-best 31.1 p p g. He scored 40 or more points 13 times, the most in the NBA that season and he led the league in total points (2,273), field goals attempted (2,047) and free throws made (501). On Feb. 25, 1977, he scored 68 points in a game against the New York Knicks despite the efforts of defensive ace Walt Frazier to bottle him up. Any more doubts?

Another testimony by someone who should know taken from a recent edition of ESPN Insider- Bill Walton on Pete Maravich: "Pete was like Wilt Chamberlain. If they played in the era of ESPN, no one else would ever get on. .. he changed basketball forever. No one that I've ever seen had the accuracy or the skill that Pete Maravich was able to dial up on command, through a lifetime of perfection through practice, creativity through imagination and visualization." Pistol Pete averaged 24.2 points a game during his pro career despite injuries, illnesses, no 3 point shot, and the hostility of not only other players in the league, but his own Atlantic Hawk team mates. (Pat Riley stated in the "History of the NBA" that "There were 250 guys in this league that were ready to knock Pete down every time he dribbled through his legs or did something fancy. Maravich's teams won 82% of their games when he scored 40 or more points.

Defense doesn't mean only being able to shut down your opponent or blocking shots, stealing is one of the hardest things to do in basketball besides blocking because you have to be able to read the game so well and anticipate what happens next, there is no room for error when it comes to stealing. One wrong attempt to steal the ball means your opponent has the upper hand.

Concerning the notion that Jordon faced more complex defenses: As an individual who averaged 44 points a game for three years in college when every team he played tried every way to stop him-double teams, box and ones etc. Maravich was undaunted by any type of defense thrown against him. The difference between Maravich and Jordon is that Maravich had All Stars on the Hawks when he was a rookie and a team that made him change his game because of their hostility over his salary.

Go to AOL video and type in Pete's name. The first two videos are great "The story of Pete Maravich" and a short "hightlight" film. In the highlight film Pete takes a jumper from the corner which the defender attempts to block. Pete's reaction will make you smile.

hmmmm ! Point well taken. Bob Coastas always reminds me of the short guy who always wanted to "fit in". Either on a basketball team, or any sport. And he was this rich kid who tried to "fit in" by using phrases such as "Let's bust a move". Then he would go home to his rich house and the servants would ask him what he wanted for dinner. Also notice that Costas never talks about the internals of the game itself. He's never "in-the-present" moment

Jordan took more shots per game than Pete. 82% figure for games over 40 taken from the book Maravich. 3pt shots are significant because Maravich was noted for his long range shooting. he made 10 of i5 when he actually had a 3pt line in 1981.

Pete had many high scoring games. Once against Buffalo when Ernie D was playing he scored 42 points without playing any of the first quarter. Pete still holds the record for most points scored on Super Bowl Sunday-50. This year Kobe averaged 31 points a game. The year Pete scored 68 against the knicks he averaged 31 without a 3 point shot. Perhaps Jordon was a better all around player but his skills were not equal to Maravich's.

I have cited the best coaches and ball handlers in the game as proof that Pete was a more skilled passer and ball handler. The differences in their shooting percentages is because of the different shot selections. MJ had the ability to go inside and play a post up game when he was having a bad shooting game.

Not only was he resented by his teammates, Pete had to contend with the hostility of the players in the league. Pat Riley stated in the "History of the NBA that there were 250 guys in the league who were ready to knock Pete down every time he dribbled between his legs, behind his back or made a fancy pass. Jordan was welcomed to the Bulls and accepted by the rest of the league. Maravich's skills and pay (for a guard and a rookie) were unusual, and his style of play resented and ridiculed.

One final thing. When a player of the skills of Nate Archibald, states that people today don't know how great Maravich really was or When Pat Riley who coached Magic Johnson states that Maravich was the best ball handler he ever saw and then stresses "Ever" and John Wooden calls Maravich the greatest ball handler who ever played it supports the case-even though I spelled Jordan's name wrong-that Maravich was just that. Maravich was not a better player than Jordon, just more skilled.

Jordon also was not a controversial player when he entered the league and was embraced by his teammates and allowed to utilize his talents. Maravich's skills were disdained (see Riley's comments below about 250 guys in the league ready to knock him down) and because of the money the Hawks paid him as a rookie -about 500,000 per year at a time when All Stars on the Hawks were paid 60,000-he was unwelcome on his own team.

The only other player that I put on his level was david Thompson, who also played on pretty awful teams that he had to carry. During Pete's era those long range shots were not considered high percentage shots and were only worth 2 points. Because of this very few people would attempt shots from that distance. However, these types of long range shots were a normal part of Pete's arsenal. Pete would have been shooting a lot of 3 pointers and if the 10 of 15 that he actually made are any indication, he would have done more than all right.

Prior to Scott Pippen coming to Chicago Jordon had plenty of opportunities to average 50 points a game and only averaged in the high thirties. No one was telling him not to shoot. The difference between Maravich and Jordon when they came into the league was stated in a previous post. Maravich faced hostility from the league and his own team mates. Pete was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks a veteran team, with a number of All Stars none of whom made more than 60 thousand. Pete was paid around $400,000 as a rookie before he ever played a game. Because Pete was white he was resented by his Afro-American teammates who considered it unfair and a form of racial bias.

Oops...Jordan...sorry about that. In the books "Maravich" or "Pistol" Danny Ainge states that he played with Bird and played against Jordan and that Maravich was more skilled than either of them. One does not average over thirty points a game without taking a lot of shots. When Lou Hudson played with Pete, he averaged 27 one year and Pete averaged 26. Ball hog? Maravich's teams won 82% of the games in which he scored 40 or more points. Jordan's 69%. Pistol should have shot even more.

You have also not responded to the fact that much of your information is wrong cited below. The consensus is that Jordan is the greatest player to ever play the game. However you will never find Former NBA players or coaches claiming that he was a more skilled ball handler, passer, or creative offensive player than "The Pistol." That is my point. Jordan, like many others was exciting, in the air, but Maravich because of his unique skills generated excitement every time he touched the ball.

MJ was not unique in his athletic abilities. David Thompson was defying gravity before MJ. Dr. J was dunking from the foul line and doing spectacular things way before MJ. However No one was doing the things Pete did-including long range shooting-before Pete came into the league and no one even today can throw the passes or dribble the ball as well as Pete Maravich could or has the variety of his shots.Pat Riley: "Pete Maravich is the best ball handler I have ever seen. Ever."
