Upgraded my smoker to a Pit Boss 5-Series. It's a pellet smoker, has a much more reliable temperature setting. This is the break in period, running high for 40 minutes. I'll have an upcoming video showing what it can produce.

Craig Arndt I’ve been looking at one of these to compliment my Pitboss 820 pellet grill but one question I had is how much airflow is happening in your standup smoker? To be more specific if you had a traditional smoker you would have smoke generated and flowing through to the exit but On my 820 grill the heat is distributed through by a fan. This is great for even heat but not so good for smoking sometimes because it dries the meat surfaces too quickly. I’m wondering if there is also a lot of wind generated in this smoker as well from the hopper or if the air is much more static on the vertical smoker? Any information would be appreciated!

There is a metal box over the hole where the pellets enter the burn chamber. It diffuses much off the air flow to just rising heat. This thing can get hot if you need it to. I like that it makes heavy smoke and it will consistently cook butts, brisket and ribs the same way. I wouldn’t say our food was ever dry, the probe is accurate and I bought a second on amazon so I get good temp readings. This smoker is the bomb, I’m doing a turkey for Thanksgiving this year.

@@CraigArndt thank you for the information. Its a lesser known issue on the pellet grills and I just didn't want to spend money on something that did the same thing so I really do appreciate the feedback. I did end up ordering and got it set up last night so I'm pretty excited for the first smoke. Take Care!

Why does these pitbosses do not throw alot of smoke

Brick oven pizzas burn at 550°+ degrees and the pizza is smoky. 275° and under there is less combustion and more smoke. Higher temps, less visible smoke.

I love my Copperhead 5, I've been told pellet smokers don't produce much smoke flavor but Copperhead hits different I think. I have been thinking of moving to the Brunswick though, it fixes a lot of the issues I have with the Copperhead

Oh no, this is the real deal smoke machine. If I cook a butt like this weekend I will, I start at 150°-200° for an hour, that thing is rolling coal. Then I turn up to 275-300° for the rest and it gets lots of smoke but it’s not thick because it burns some of it up… but the flavor is there for sure. Lesson I learned, pellets expand like mad with moisture, so I can’t leave it outdoors. Stays in the garage, they turn the auger to concrete! Thanks for checking the video out!

This has been a great smoker, it makes perfect bbq. But just a warning, don't leave it outside. I did and it rained, the pellets swelled up in the auger and hopper and it was like concrete. Had to take it all apart and hammer the auger out, lol. So I keep it in my garage now, but soon as I cleared all those chips, I reloaded it and it ran fine. Using it for Easter to smoke 5 pounds of fresh sausage.

@@CraigArndt yes! That is one thing I make sure not to do! I was always worried it would happen so I keep it in the garage until I’m using it. I definitely don’t want to have to take it apart!

First thanks for the review. I bought the same smoker at Wal-Mart for $396. As of July 7 the grill is on sale at Wal-Mart for $299. People can Google Wal-Mart and fact check for me. Anyway did the same burn off. You probably want to get it out of the garage. Did my first real cook on Jul 4. Ribs and eye of round. Did the startup as stated in the guide book. Set the temp on after a 23 minute heat up at 350 to 250 degrees. One problem I had was the temp varied from 215 to 375 in the first 3 hours. I joined a pit Boss forum and was told that it's better to start on smoke. Set temp to 200. Wait until the temp reaches 145 and the smoke settles then take it to your set temp. All in all was initially angry because I thought the roast cooked to quick . When I sliced it I was pleased. Last thought, I was so fascinated by being able to see my food while it was cooking I set in a chair about 10ft away from the smoker. Dosed off a few times and got a mild heat stroke. When I cleared my throat my spit was black from the smoke. Didn't mean to gross anyone out but just want my fellow smokers to be careful out there. Once again thanks for the post. I'll sub and look forward to your experiences

Purchased same model at Walmart in mid 2018. When the unit works, it works well, however I've had numerous failures due to poor design. The Chimney welds have broken numerous times and I've had to JB weld several times. Pit Boss sent a new chimney and it failed as well. The controller has failed and needed replacement, which I think is related to it being directly under the fire box. Also, when door opens and food is removed, the controller gets splashed. I've already had to go to Amazon to purchase another igniter as well, since I could not get Pit Boss to respond to parts purchases or replacement. I would look at a different unit with the control box to the side. When I purchase another, I will look at Masterbuilt or Weber.

I just started getting some paint peel on the inner side of the door. I've been lucky so far with the controller and yes, it is a mess when you're cooking. I clean mine every time, SOS pad and water on the door so I can see in there, but that is easy. Doesn't scratch the glass and cuts right through that junk. I wait a couple days, vacuum the fire box out and then I clean the temp sensor in the back. It definitely needs constant maintenance.

You should really like it. I've had it almost a year and it really does a great job. I try to keep the glass clean, its not easy. I found that apple wood is the worst for the glass even though the wood is so good to smoke with. It coats the glass with a brown film that just is a bear to get off.

Beware! I've had my Pro Series 5 for over a month now and still haven't been able to cook with it! Set it at 350 for burn off and it got to 330 then goes down to 235 and re ignited, went to 240 and stoped igniting - went down to 170 before re igniting! And so on till an error at 130 deg. Been alot of simular complaints on KZfaq

The Series 5 is big, 5 racks 21.5” x 14” deep. You can put a lot of food in it, or space stuff out so it’s not cramped. Holds 50 pounds of pellets but it’s pretty stingy on them. Just made two kinds of bone in chicken breasts yesterday, came out really juicy.

Hi Randy, I just posted an update to the Pit Boss smoker. After you're done smoking, turn the knob to "smoke" let it cool down for a five minutes, then hold the power button in until the screen shuts off. The fan will still run for 5 minutes but no pellets will feed.

Hi would you know whats the difference between this one and the pro series????
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 4 жыл бұрын
I think the only difference in the 5 series is the amount of racks. My Copperhead series 5 that I bought at Walmart has 5 racks. But I've seen some 5 series with 4 racks that are more than I paid. I can't believe that anything is different internally or mechanically. The reviews are all the same whether you buy it at Bass Pro or Walmart... so buy the one with more racks for more cooking sq. ft. Just made a rack of ribs tonight, I love the smoker. Just use good pellets with little dust, smaller quantities so you can change them out and you'll have a great time smoking. Buy an extra temp probe to use on the top to know the top and bottom temperatures. You'll be a pro.

Mad Sexy Easter Sunday I got an Err on the screen. I googled it, found out what to do to clear the auger. I had just bought a new bag of pellets from Walmart and had them shipped to me, bad idea. It was sawdust by the time it got to me. Use quality pellets, clean out the burn chamber before every smoke, it’ll work great. Other than this, never had an issue. And fine steel wool with apple cider vinegar will keep the glass clean. It’s a great smoker.

How do you get smoke at high temperatures? I set mine at 250 and it stops smoking
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 4 жыл бұрын
It's smoking the entire time it's cooking, the combustion gasses go straight up out the vent. I stopped putting the meat in on smoke for an hour, I just set it right at the temp I'm cooking at, usually 275º. Everything comes out good and smoky. Just did a pork butt yesterday, bone in.
