Also Riddick is such a bad ass character, who is more complicated than he lets on. You get more of his backstory in follow up movies. My favorite line is when he is forced to kill one of the creatures when Jack is in trouble. "Did not know who it was fucking with". It is one of the top ten badass lines in movies. This is a great series. Pitch Black released as just that title, the Chronicles of Riddick part was added after the next film and when they decided it could be a franchise. There are 4 films in the Chronicles currently with rumours of a fifth in early development. The next film is called Dark Fury and is an animated feature that tells the story between this film and the next live action which is Chronicles of Riddick. That film is much of a grand space opera style. Then finally you have Riddick which narrows the story back down again. There was also a great couple of video games for the first Xbox and later consoles/PC. Telling the story of Riddick in the Butcher Bay max security prison. Escape From Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena.

It was a sleeper hit, to be sure, grossing over twice its 23 Million Budget and eventually becoming sort of a cult classic. It was also Vin Diesels' first leading role. It has two Sequels, both also directed by David Twohy: "The Chronicles of Riddick" (which is more of a Space Opera, greatly expanding this Universe) and "Riddick" (which is more of a Horror-Film similar to the Original). A fourth Movie, "Riddick: Furya", is currently in pre-production.

The lead girl Radha Mitchell is actually an Aussie but plays an AMERICAN here she is also in the remake of THE CRAZIES which is a great end of world horror thriller you should also check out Jen And who can forget Vin Diesel as Riddick this was my first introduction to him such a powerhouse action figure here and watching his change of heart at the end made me want to jump up and cheer . Really cool movie. Radha Mitchell was everywhere in the 1990s-2000s. I was pleasantly surprised to see her become kind of a mainstream star, because early on she was more known as an indie actor. Her character's death gave this sci-fi horror movie a surprisingly emotional punch. The 2nd movie, "The Chronicles of Riddick" is probably my favorite because it is just so audacious. They went WAY deep with the lore and the universe-building in that one. The third movie was a retread of the first movie, but just as well done, so there is something for everyone in this series. Finally, there was a video game that was part of The Chronicles of Riddick, called "Escape from Butcher Bay", and it was shockingly good. Not only as a game, but as an exploration of Riddick's backstory. I really hope it gets a remaster for modern consoles/PC.

I love the color shift in this film when the yellow sun sets, and the blue dwarf dominates. Something I can't recall seeing before and it really struck me when I watched it in the theatre.

1 - I love that this check recognized Cpt Anderson's voice from ME. He's done a shit ton of roles (like in cult classic "They Live!") but his best was as Elroy Patashnik in Community 2 - I was definitely bummed out that they killed Officer Aeryn Sun so early. Too early.

This movie is reason why I always quote the sweet spot. Bc literally riddick taps johns inner thigh and what's right there, major artery 60-90 seconds before you bleed out. Then there's the lumbar part, you hit the lung to the side, and thanks to the great christopher lees commentary bout his death in LOTR you dont make a loud sound when you're stabbed in the back.

Out of the "trilogy" if you can even call it that, 'Pitch Black' is by far my favorite. Chronicles of Riddick, the second film, has a stellar cast (Judi Dench, Thandie Newton, & Karl Urban) and it tries to expand the lore, but it falls short for me. Riddick, the third film is a little bit of both.

This is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies. It's low-budget done right. It was really well-shot and edited. It was really something to see this in a dark theater.

Hi, Jen! Before I view your reaction video, I wanted to share an anecdote about an English friend. Paul, rather enjoyed "Saving Private Ryan", by the way. Vin Diesel is in that movie, but he wasn't aware of that. So, Paul fell in love with actress Claudia Black because of "Farscape" so he, of course, wanted to see more of her, so he rented the video cassette tape of the movie, wait. No, be bought a used copy cheap, at a flea market. He was enjoying the movie just fine until the vore scene when her character is swarmed by the native life forms. He got so furious with Vin Diesel's character for not saving her before she died! So he stopped the movie, ejected it, slammed it hard, or threw it hard against his hard floor! He never finished the movie, let alone the movie set/series! He called the actor Vin Diesel, not the character "Riddick" one of the worst ever! He called people who would watch Vin's movies various derogatory terms as he said that he would not be watching any more of Vin's movies! Then later on, he shared his review of "Saving Private Ryan" and he mostly praised it, though he's always a bit miffed when he feels like the British aren't given enough credit in WW2 movies and series. So I asked him why he changed his mind about Vin and he had no idea what I meant. So I explained it to him, and he sarcastically thanked me for ruining the movie for him, and he retracted his previous praises! Now the irony is, well, that would be too much, I guess. 🤔

Yes! The day I saw this in the theater I was by myself and I was blown away. I went right home and told my parents "you are coming with me to the movies!" This is right up their alley and I needed to share it with them immediately. (Although, I had to warn my dad that the female lead dies. He's a big softy.) Anyway, please watch the other Riddick movies!

Love this movie, it was filmed in my home state of South Australia in the desert just outside a town called Coober Pedy where a large portion of the population lives in underground homes. Very interesting place to visit, just don't visit during summer...

Fun factoid: After the fight, when Johns is loading and firing his shotgun, the shell that doesn't fire is actually one of his fake hollowed out shells he hides his dope in.
