Ville: Here we have the world's most famous sauna bather, that is presumably a honorary title I can use. Timo: Thank you. Ville: Well uh... What significance does sauna hold to you? Timo: It has always been significant part of my life. I already spent lots of time there as a small cub and it still is part of my daily routines. Ville: But wha- Timo: There was a one year hiatus in-between. Ville: We'll come back to that terrible year soon, but what is the 'thing'? Is it the warmth, is it the atmopshe- Timo: Atmosphere. Of course also, well, every day is different. Sometimes you enjoy very mild temperatures and sometimes you enjoy proper flogging... it's not about the temperatures for me though, sauna is all abou- Ville: Atmosphere. Timo: It's like a temple for Finns. Ville: Indeed. Does company matter to you? Do you often bathe alone? Timo: Both. What is fun about sauna is that you will always meet new people. Even though public saunas have become less common, they are the best places. 👌 Everyone always has some interesting stories to share. Ville: You like public saunas? Timo: Of course, of course. Ville: Considering your sauna expertise, wood-heated or electric sauna? Timo: If I have to choose between those two, wood-heated. Ville: Are there other options? Timo: Smoke sauna Ville: Hahaa of course, smoke sauna. Timo: But normal wood-heated sauna is fine as well. There should be one, right? Ville: Indeed, this sauna is wood-heated. Timo: Okay Ville: Apparently some regulations state that moving sauna should not have an electric stove. But wood-heated stove, no problem! Timo: Hahaha we should be pleased about that. Ville: We should be pleased. We are pleased that we can have some kind of stove hahaha. Timo: But let's not turn this into a smoke sauna. Ville: Hahaha hope not... But let's switch to Heinola. That was a terrible incident. Timo: It indeed was. It took long time to recover. But it is already 7 years since it happened. Ville: And you have recovered well? Timo: True, true. I'm still some kind of version of me. Ville: And you are still able to bathe in sauna? Timo: True, true, true. Ville: You don't have any... ? Timo: No, no, no. Ville: And you still do it, right? Timo: It only increased my desire to bathe in sauna. It must've been the hiatus, having to cool off for an entire year. Ville: Oh, so you have tried to compensate that one year for seven years now? Timo: I have done my best trying to compensate for it. And like, it's so nice when you have the opportunity to try out new saunas. Some people have been weirded out, like what's the goddam point after that experience.. Ville: Like me, for example. Timo: Ouch hahaha. But new sauna is always new sauna. They are all so different. Ville: What is the best sauna you have ever visited? Timo: Sigh, it has to be Helsinki Sauna Society. Ville: Sauna Society? Timo: It has to be because there is so wide variety of different saunas. Inevitably everyone is going to find something that suits their taste. Many smoke saunas, single-heated saunas on top of that and so on. It would be strange if someone didn't find their favorite type of sauna there. It's so fun to roam and zig-zag around as there are so many different saunas in such a small space. Ville: Is it possible to turn bathing in sauna into a profession? Timo: That is what I have tried to do! Ville: Have you succeeded? Timo: I used to be a metalworker all the way until 2010, even though I pursued competitive sauna bathing as a hobby for ten years. At that time I was like, goddammit, I wish I could turn this into a profession somehow. After the incident I had to return to school, because I could not return to my previous profession due to injuries. I started to think, like, what could I do and even took an online test to figure out suitable professions - it suggested religion teacher and underwear model. Ville: Ahahhah. Which one did you consider? Timo: ""unintelligible"" rather quickly, but in employment center they started to look into the situation and then we found such thing as Sauna Therapy School. I graduated there and- Ville: Sauna Therapy School!? Timo: I'll soon give you a such "therapy" session on the benches you can't even imagine! Ville: Goddammit, I'm now starting to become terrified! I'm not sure anymore if dare to go to a sauna with you! But what exactly is is sauna therapy? Timo: It encompasses ridiculous amount of different things, like different treatments you can do. Pretty much everything that has something to do with sauna. Personally I do mostly cupping, herbal skin treatment and such. Ville: ""looks at camera"" Oh my god, we are going to bathe together. I bet he brought acupuncture needless or something like that with him! Timo: I brought horns with me! Ville: Oh, I actually noticed your bag looked kind of heavy. Timo: Starting from sauna stones. Ville: You have sauna stones with you? Timo: Nah, just kidding. Ville: Hahaha, that would have been kind of... like... "Unfortunately I can't bathe with your stones, I always bring my own sauna stones with me". But hey, should we go to the sauna and try it out? Timo: Let's go. Ville: Let's go. We have this thing going on, like, there always has to be someone in the sauna, so I will tell them to bugger off first. They have been sitting four hours there already, so at this point they are probably fairly well marinated. But without further a do, let's go! Timo: Let's go. Ville: I'll hail at them... the door opens soon, you have already been four hours there, so no problem, we will come to replace you! Sauna posse: ""unintelligible"" Ville: Okay, fine, good. 👍 Brave boys, still hanging there.
