6 жыл бұрынThe Devil's boulder busting destruction is halted by a stubborn foe, testing his shape shifting abilities. Scored to an old phonographic gospel recording, this highly metaphorical animated short illustrates the relentless resistance, and ultimate victory, overcoming the gritty penetration of abuse. Music by Viola Brown, phonograph recording from the 1930's.
On a personal note, this film is about a strong person entering my life, and rescuing me from a cycle of self destruction and abuse of others. In this way, I was able to crush my inner lothario, and live a very happy life. This film is dedicated to my wife, the rock of our family.

I love how you made this giant boulder a character in its own right. I almost want to write up an interaction between two characters that follow these beats - an abuser used to getting his way, coming up against a person like an immovable force of nature, the two of them verbally sparring until the abuser's downfall, with the boulder's victory empowering others.

When one decided to open their defenses to be more detached or different, others repeated and removed their defenses, which allowed bad energy (or feelings, anxiety, the devil, all of it) to enter and destroy everything he built so far, but one of them realized that they were just destroying themselves, and decided to be unique, but this time by his own way, the others then noticed how different and strong he was, but unique and different from everyone else, and soon everyone decided to follow his example, becoming unique and strong in their own ways, darkness would not destroy them anymore. Yeah, five years... I know, but I had to come back after so many years, this animation is simply gold. 🏆

I imagine this animation as a representation of the dictatorship, of how the demon behaves like someone who abuses those who think they are less strong than him and the rocks are rebels or partisans.

Satan finds a tiny foothold in a person and uses it to destroy them. The cycle continues until one person decides to stand up. At the end, that person inspires all the others to do the same.

very true. the devil is always in us.. the struggle is to keep that force under control! This film visually illustrated how meeting my wife crushed that part of my personality.. it's still there.. under that rock.. but it is quite flattened.

So in one way, each rock represented the devil breaking a part of your life. But the big rock represented what happens when you fully put your faith in God, and curbing the devil in one part of your life helped stop him from destroying the rest of it. Beautiful animation and a powerful message, I loved it.

Taking this literally, why did the boulder grow? What made it so special compared to the ones that came before it? Why does the devil character care enough about destroying all of the boulders that he would rather mend the damage that he wrought instead of going to the next boulder? If anything, it makes me feel sadness for him because he was unable to complete his life's goal. Without boulders with head-shaped holes, the devil character has no meaning to live. Truly a very strong animation with a lot of unanswered questions. Who is the devil character? Where did the boulders come from? What is the source of the mystic power to shapeshift? Is it the medium of animation itself? How far can we go down the rabbit hole I wonder... Is the animation a reflection of the artist's own experience, or is the artist making a statement on society? I will eagerly await the next installment.

Thank you for your well thought out comment. It wasn't my intention to make this cryptic at all, just metaphorical (I avoid literal in everything i draw). The story and images will mean dfferent things to different people, but to me, the devil represents an abusive/mischievous part of my personality, and the growing boulder represents an individual that challanged me, and then crushed this part of me. My favorite part is the very end, when the boulder inspires all those around it to grow. Interesting that you feel sad for the devil.. understandable, being that the boulders themselves are inviting their own destruction (by opening up to him). Thanks again for your comment, I could have really used you in a Q and A!!

I think it has something to do with breaking the chain from generations of abuse or addictions like being the first in your family tree to stop letting alcohol or drugs for example (the demon) to destroy you like it did with previous generations (the first other rocks that were destroyed) and stop from passing it on to other generations in you family that come after (other rocks became stronger).

The rocks he that he brake maybe represented for the obstacles that we have to face and get through in our life, but sometimes, there is gonna be a big big trouble that force you to be flexible or changing yourself to adopt the situation, thats when you have to find your own way to deal with it without loosing yourself. unfortunatly, not all of us can do that :( Thats just my opinion :( sorry if u dunt understand what I’m typing cuz my English is not quite good.

@@PatrickSmithAnimation Either way, it's a good animation. In other comments though, I've seen people say they feel sad for the Devil despite him repeatedly destroying things for fun. Maybe they don't think of the rocks as human? If he were killing people for every rock destroyed in here I bet they wouldn't feel the same way towards him.

@@jhonlee4458 I'm sorry, but he's literally the cause of all evil. Causing pain is the only way he can experience pleasure. He's not to be respected, but is to be taken seriously. His arms are too short to box with God, so he boxes with you instead. Don't think he doesn't hate you.

@@jhonlee4458 Well the boxing was a metaphor. Basically, in the beginning he was in heaven with all of the other Angels. But he was so proud of himself that he wanted to be God himself, not serve God. So he got a bunch of other angels to join him, and because they all rebelled they were cast out of heaven. After that, since they wanted nothing to do with God, they became the opposite of them. Because God is all good in nature, and he became the opposite of that, Satan became all bad. Now he hates God, and because God loves us and wants us to be with him, he hates us too, and wants to lie to us in order to trick us and say all these other things are true, when most of them are really lies. When I said he "boxes" with us, I meant since God is stronger than Satan, and we are weak by ourselves and without God's help, Satan picks on us instead.

From my point of view, this short film is about being brave and daring to oppose others or to oppose certain situations. The important here is not the devil but the rocks. The key part is the end one, when all the rocks follow the example of the first one, which resisted to be broken by the devil. Following this interpretation, the message of the film would be: sometimes there is only needed one brave act to inspire others to follow the example. Do not undervalue your existence, you can make a change if you try to.

The context is a bit religious, the song is def religious. But you are correct that the story is not religious.. but def has to do with defeating what some would call a "sinful" aspect of the personality. Thanks for your comment, really appreciate it!
