I had a Traeger Texas grill for my introduction to BBQ and used it for 9 years and loved it. Stayed with Traeger and bought an Ironwood last summer and it’s been great as well. Thanks so much for what you do. You produce some great content and I’ve followed your tips many times! Love the passion you have for BBQ. Keep up the great work!

I've been using a recteq for about 2 years now and I love it. I've only ever had 1 issue, which was user (my) error, and I called them at 8pm on a weekend and they responded to me and helped me out. As an entry-mid level smoker, I couldn't be happier.

Great review Jeremy! I have enjoyed watching your videos for over a year now and have learned a lot of practical and applicable information to improve my BBQ prowess. I've been using a Traeger Pro-575 for 3 years now (my first smoker), and have become a rabid BBQ'er. But now I'm looking to up my game and the amount of BBQ I can produce, so I've been researching my next smoker. This video will help me narrow the field, plus Pitts & Spitts are American made!

I just have a little Traeger Pro 22 and it’s been fantastic so far. I’ve only had it since April but it gets used one or twice per week. Sausage or chicken mid week and pulled pork, ribs or brisket at weekends. I’m using Cooking Pellets cherry or hickory most of the time. There aren’t so many options in the UK.

The best advice you gave in one of your videos about smokers and learning to use them and cook great BBQ, was to learn your cooker and everything about it. Regardless if it is an offset, weber kettle, pellet smoker, etc , etc. The next best tip was don't change to many variables all at once to your cooks. I have been using a Pitboss 820ps for 4 yrs and after applying you tips and advice have dialed my BBQ into the best I think it can be with the equipment I have. I will eventually move up to the more expensive pellet cookers when I can afford to do so. The pitts & spitts is definitely on that list for sure.

I've had a Grilla grills Silverback for 5 years now. in the last year i have had to replace the control board and auger. the Auger was covered under their 4yr warranty, control board was just out of the window. I've run it with lumberjack pellets the entire time and it produces great bbq. Grilla's customer service and ownership community is top notch. Definitely a company worth checking out.

When watching pellet grill reviews, I like to see how easy it is to clean, or keep clean with foil. I switched to a Pit Boss Pro vertical pellet smoker because it was so much easier to maintain than the Pit Boss Pro 700 series, Pit Boss is a pain to cover curved heat deflector/grease tray with foil. Vertical smokers have the ability to get the meat up away from the fire pot, it's nice to see the high end barrel style smokers have that option. The smoker in this video looks awesome, great video.

Have the Traeger Timberline XL. Went up from the Pro series we got about 6 years ago. Pro series was solid, never had any problems with it, which is why we stuck with Traeger. So far, the Timberline XL has been fantastic. We've run it pretty much every weekend for a couple months now. The controller/app is really easy to use. The Meater probes are handy. Love the Super Smoke setting. Everything has come off tasting fantastic.

I’ve had nothing but nightmares with my XL. My 780 was more reliable and cost a fraction of the cost of this lemon. It took multiple rounds of back and forth because of missing parts, a bad igniter, and then a motherboard that died. Insane for the money I spent on this thing.

I'm very happy with my MAK 2 Star pellet smoker. It's run flawlessly for the last four and a half years, and the build quality and price is comparable to your Pitts and Spitts. I expect it will last a good many years more. The controller and web software has opened up a whole world of time and temperature programming options. The first night cooking a pork butt on it and being able to sleep soundly without having to attend a fire was life changing.

I would have to agree with you on the pellet smoker second shelf is very important. I own an RT 700 rec tech we’re in our third year and It’s pretty much plug and play no temp swings, great smoke for a pellet smoker and by doing our own second shelf renders my barbecue pulled pork or brisket very nicely. We use the bottom for sides. Great video when you owned your 1200 I almost bought that I just couldn’t pry that extra cash out of my hand and I’m not saying I’m mad about it either I’m enjoying my recteq. Thank you

I have a Pit Boss that I have used to cook a couple briskets on now, the first one with the factory's pellets and the second with the Almond Wood pellets you recommended a few videos back. Both were done on the bottom rack and came out dry. After watching this video I am going to try one on the second rack next time to see if that helps. I have learned so much from watching your videos. Thank you!!

Have had a Costco Traeger 34 for 3 years now. So far, other than the pellets in the hopper "tunneling" a few times, i've had no issues. I do usually use the bottom grill and often times am surprised at how fast things cook - will have to put back in the 2nd shelf and give that a go a few times.

I have been using a Treager Timberline 850 for about 3 and a half years now, and overall I'm really satisfied. Thebiggest issues were lack of smoke flavor which I've solved with adding a tube smoker (and it tastes great) and other issues that I think are more due to my lacking maintenance/cleanup skills.

I bought a Camp Chef SG 30 back in 2018 as my intro to low-n-slow. It's been fantastic. I've only ever had a few minor problems and they were all solved by a good cleaning and some regular maintenance. Additionally I bought a Yoder YS640s in May of '21 as I needed more cooking space and wanted a unit that I could use for life (built like a tank). I seriously considered buying the Pitts & Spitts 1500 but I couldn't get it delivered in time for the 4th of July weekend. That weekend I smoked SRF Wagyu briskets & Compart Duroc pork butts for 60+ people using both my Camp Chef and my Yoder. Everything came out great and got fabulous reviews.

I'm using a Pitboss Austin XL and I love it! It just works. Temps hold within about 15 degrees. Meaning, every so often when the pellets dump, you get some added smoke rather than a constant blue smoke. Others with PID controllers have complained they don't produce enough smoke flavor after upgrading their controllers to a PID. I've had it for almost 3 years with no issues that weren't operator error. Cold weather smoking is a bit of a challenge but, more so when it's cold and windy versus just cold.

I've used the Austin XL for about 2 years. Had to remove the bottom plate because temp swings were 100° both ways... I have issues with the grill shutting off due to fire going out.. sometimes 3-4 times a cook if it's a 15 pound brisket. I don't have any other issues.. and most cooks are a success. I also want to point out the Austin XL cooks the same as expensive pellet grills... for 1/10 the price... currently $400 at Walmart... can't beat that

I bought a brand called Even Embers at Tractor Supply. It has been great so far. I've cooked 5 briskets, ribs, pork butt, burgers, and brats. I am still working on getting the best smoke flavor, but I believe it is because I started with cheap pellets. I am trying different brands to see if they impart more smoky taste than the basic hickory and oak blend I had. Just need more time with it.

I have a Green Mountain Daniel Boone and I have the pizza attachment. It is the Wi-Fi model, I have had it for almost 6 years and it has preformed flawlessly. I use it winter and summer and have the winter wrap for it which helps with pellet consumption when using it in the winter. I built a second grill wrack for it which is well worth doing. We've had a Grilla Grills Chimp for 2 years. Got the small one b/c there's just 3 of us in the family. It's big enough for one large brisket or 3 racks of ribs. It has a stainless lid, heavy stainless racks, double wall construction for better insulation and less fuel consumption and holds 16 lbs of pellets. We like it very much. Super build quality and the food comes out great using techniques learned here at Mad Scientist BBQ. I'm actually thinking about stepping up to the larger Silverbac AT so I can have more room.

I have had a Grilla Grills Silverbac for about 2 years now... I have a Weber SmokeFire EX6 and love it. I do a 5 minute clean before each use which entails wiping the ash and any grease to the grease holes and making sure the fire pot is clear. I also keep it level. These small steps have kept this thing running flawlessly for me for over a year. Done everything from brisket and pork butts to steaks, burgers and hot dogs with all sorts of meats in-between. All came out great once I learned my pit and where the hotter side was and how to use it to my advantage. The bark it produces is second to none, and the most recent software and firmware update , it puts off a pretty good smoke flavor. I was hesitant to buy due to the lousy press it received on its roll out but I took a chance as they had a $200 dollar discount last summer and Weber had a 100 day no questions asked buy back if not happy. I pulled the trigger and could not be happier. I love my SmokeFire.

@@fishindoc6025 Yeah, I'm in Chicago and used this 2 times over the winter which was for prime rib on Christmas and another time in January. I can put it right off my door and not have to deal with the elements or worry about temps with that thing. The older I get, the more the cold bothers me so the less time out there, the better. Hi Jeremey. I run a campchef 24. It's not the biggest, or thickest grill but it was reviewed as the nest within my price range ($1600 AU). I looked at traeger, gmg etc but $ value this was ranked highly, especially considering local (Aus) support. 2.5 years in and never an issue with briskets, pork butts etc but I still can't get ribs right. That's more me being special than the grill though, and chicken/pizza/fast cooks I tend to do on a bullet/charcoal smoker. I do wish I had more space, as an 20lb brisket takes up the whole top rack, but that's a me issue not the smoker. 100% I think a lot comes down to the pellets. Cheap pellets produce crap bbq while something like the knotty wood almond makes great smoke. If I had a bigger back yard, sure I'd consider a Pitts/Yoder at $7000 but really cooking for just me, the Campchef does well enough.

I have the 42" Lonestar Grillz pellet smoker, after months of comparing various smokers the LSG was the one for me. The amount of customization you can do is great but what really helped me make up my mind was the Fireboard controller with 6 probe ports, that is programmed to constantly produce smoke. As far as I know no other pellet smoker does that. And the fact that you can cold smoke with it was another feature that won me over. I have never seen a pellet smoker produce smoke at 70 degrees, I have video proof of it for those who dont believe it. I love the fact how the burn pot is held in place with 2 spring clamps and all you have to do to clean it out is to undo the strap, pull it out and dump it. You dont have to remove all the grill plates, the heat shield and all the other crap you have to remove on standard pellet smokers just to get to the burn pot that has to be cleaned out with a Shop Vac. You want to talk about heat retention? This thing is made out of 3/16" steel, not the soda can steel most big box store brand smokers are made from, mine weighs 500lbs. Unfortunately there aren't to many KZfaq video on them which is probably why people don't know about them. And there customer service is fantastic!

I purchased the Traeger 780 around the first of March and so far it’s been a workhorse. I’ve smoked 13 briskets with it and they’ve come out really well. I use it for most of our family meals usually three or four a week and it’s performed very well. It took awhile to find a decent pellet we liked and stayed with the Better Burning Post Oak (BB) brand. Seems to burn a little hotter than others but it may because of the East Texas summer. Nor do they have that chemical fragrance most others seem to have.

Trager 1300 its worked well as I do catering with it for the past 3 years, changed the heat rod in the first year due to fault. Best smoke is at between 200 and 235.. above that it seems to burn any pellets quickly with no smoke. It holds temp really well although the probe is upper right so its sort of in the wrong place, it helps that its double lined. Cons would say are the grease tray and small drain, the control unit is just a pain in the ass and would never recommend grilling on it as it just doesnt get that direct heat.

Been using a Traeger pro 34 for about 4yrs now and 1 problem was the prob would sense overheat, quick fix good as new, key was to clean it every time I cleaned my grates. But I still have yet to find pellets that compare to offset smoker flavor. I also use an insulated blanket year round to retain heat since it does not have thick metal and it sure does make a difference.

I also have the Maverick 2000, except I opted to go for the full stainless steel option. The steel is so thick and heavy it makes all other pellet smokers seem like tin cans. It's a beast and handmade in the USA. The diffuser plate and grease plates are so thick I can easily cook briskets fat side up on the bottom rack and they come out perfect. I've had it for about a year now and still love it.

I have a Traeger Tailgater that I use for a secondary grill (use a ceramic grill for my serious cooks). It is easy to use. However, 1) it does not provide enough smoke flavor, 2)sometimes the pellets won't feed properly so you have to check it every hour and 2) I have to use an insulation cover in the fall and winter to avoid getting "error codes" on the hopper. I would love to taste some brisket on these other pellet grills to check the smoke profile. Good review !

I have a Green Mountain Grill Daniel Boone Prime that I have upgraded with the BBQ HQ grate system that you featured on your channel. This made the BIGGEST difference between grilling/smoking/cooking on the bottom rack vs the top rack. Using the top rack makes the biggest difference with getting more smoke flavor and a more traditional low and slow. Previously with using the bottom rack a whole packer brisket would be done WAY too fast because of the radiant heat.

I have the Rec Teq 700. It is absolutely phenomenal, and the best money I have spent. 40 lb hopper, and it burns roughly 1 lb an hour. The temperature has only varied once...and that was due to heavy rain (and since I have the alerts set up on my phone, I got notified about the temp swing, and put a canopy over it), otherwise I have never seen it off by more than + or - 3 degrees. I have cooked briskets, ribs, tri-tip, ribeyes, pork butts (for pulled pork), turkey (spatchcocked), and smoked sausage (although it's lowest setting is 180 degrees which is a little too high for cold smoking, and their cold smoking box has been sold out for 2+ years), beef ribs...every Friday is smoking Friday now. I researched many grills before my purchase, and this one won me over with their 6 year warranty, and peoples comments on their customer service. My only gripe is that literally about 3 months after I bought it, they released the 1250, which I would have bought instead, but that is not their fault, just my typical bad luck/timing.

I’ve had 7 Recteq’s…currently have 4. Purchased all models for designing my custom rack systems for them 😁. Love the Recteq line…great middle of the road pellet rig! I’ve had this Maverick 2000 aswell…it’s heavy duty & built well, just never produced any smoke no matter what I did, resulting in hardly any smoke flavor. Temp varied a lot through the chamber aswell. I have the LSG pellet aswell & so far this is my favorite 😜. Built extremely well & smokes like I’ve never seen a pellet rig smoke before. Fireboard controller is top notch aswell. Definitely a premium rig…although it smokes like crazy (clean smoke), food isn’t rediculously smokey. Just about right IMO. Ofcoarse my favorites are my stickburns hands down (I build my own), but this is a pellet smoker video so I’ll keep it to that 👍. Great video bud! Keep ‘em commin!

Great review. Thanks Jeremy. It took me a long time to decide on a pellet smoker. I was watching Traeger for the launch of their new Timberline, but the sticker shock was too much for me. Recteq was on my shortlist. I opted for the 1250, which was still a decent amount considering I'd just had my custom made stick burner built... and paid for. RT offers a good deal on their portable 340 when you buy a bigger one, so I snagged that too. I've not regretted the decision at all, other than the wheels on the 340 are super small and those on the 1250 are great on concrete, but tough to move around on crushed granite. Normally I'll sort of baby the 1250 and use the 340 for searing. It gets plenty hot, but I imagine that the 1250 gets hotter. We'll be filling up the stick burner Saturday, so I may use the 1250 to finish off some steaks and duck. I like the idea of putting the wrapped brisket/butt/ribs in the 1250 too, so I can quit watching the temp so closely. From what I could tell, other than having only 2 shelves, the 1250 offers everything the P&S offers. Customer services has been excellent so far (I got on the phone with one concern early on and the guy walked me through way more than was associated with the concern). The RT 2500 BFG was what I really wanted to get. It still came in a little lower than your P&S and, if it's anything like the 1250, it's probably built really well also. If you want to jazz up your grill a bit, I know a guy who can sell you a custom wrap for it. I got a Texas flag for the top and the temp chart to go on the hopper/side-shelf. I'd have customized it more, but didn't realize it was an option until after I'd gotten it. You can get pretty much anything you want.

You wanted to hear from us so :) Been a "casual" BBQ and grill guy my whole life but really got into the hobby when the pandemic hit after buying a kamado style grill. Now like several in this hobby I am on the search for different style grills to have fun with while cooking. About 4 months ago I bought my first pellet grill, the Traeger Silverton 810 from Costco. I figured it would be fun to vlog my journey with a grill type that BBQ snobs turn their nose up at. Hell, pellet snobs turn their nose on this brand. Being from Costco the risk is low because I can return it at any time for any reason no questions asked. Fun little project right? Well...... First off this one model leaks smoke (and heat) like crazy. Took off the lid and applied gasket to stop most of the smoke and heat leakage from this location. This model (and most pellet grills) are made from the thinnest metal on the planet. There is no way this is the best method for low and slow cooks. Logically you want the thickest insulated steel you can get for the sides and the lid. I imagine this is why you say low and slow cooks are better done on the top rack as the burner is having to churn and burn a lot of pellets to keep the heat stable. I found a guy that makes replacement heat deflectors and drip pans out of thicker stainless steel so I bought a set to try. Doing a 1 hour burn with both the old and new parts I can gladly say they make a difference. The edges of the original drip pan would run about 30 degrees hotter than the rest of the grill but with the new materials it dropped to within 5 to 10 degrees. The theory here is that the metal being thicker holds and radiates heat better thus causing the burner to work less making less heat from the "fire" rise along the edges. I think I have the grill at a good spot now where it is working as it should. Guessing Traeger uses cheaper material in these key spots to save cost for both them and for the normal consumer that won't care. The next mod I would like to do to this grill would be to get somebody to make a better door. This grill comes with a "propane grill" shaped door that can't be good for convection where the heat and smoke will roll in the chamber around the food you are cooking. If somebody could make a more dome shaped lid it would improve flow and give me a little more space where I could replace the top rack with one that extends out a little further. Also if a thicker steel is used in theory more heat will be retained in the cook chamber as well. Seems like every pellet smoker I have seen has poor smoke retention and air circulation in the chamber compared to an offset, kamado style, or even a kettle. Guessing its a balance between keeping that small fire going and the oxygen required for combustion? Anyways, if somebody smarter than me could solve this problem it would go a long way toward addressing the complaint of "my pellet smoker doesn't produce smoke flavored food". For 99% of folks this grill I have will work fine out of the box so don't take my post as a negative review. I like to tinker and play with fire that's all.

My first entry into pellet grills was the Traeger Timberline 650. I've only had one issue with it and that was the temperature know fell off about 2 weeks after purchase. I called, they were super nice, sent me a new knob... Wrong knob... Called back and turns out that my version of the 650 has a special metal colored know and the only know they have would not seat properly. I was sad that they didn't have an exact match. I ended up being frustrated with them and just super glued the original knob back in place. Works fine, but their support wasn't the best. Giving this one away to my son-in-law and looking for a different brand. Thanks for the review! Seriously considering this one, as we have it locally in Houston. Thanks again!
