I loved watching the game every year. It was actually a Charities game played every year except 74 bc of the Strike. 41 and just over a half games....as the 42 game ended in that torrential rain storm....plus the fans decided to take over the field! I miss those games and, the thought of such a game today would be laughed at. I would love to see a return to that game, played under the same rules as the Hall of Fame Game...but I'm in a minority for that return lol.

Never see this type of exhibition today. NFL players would not risk an injury as they do not have guaranteed contracts. College players waiting for the draft would not risk injury as it would lower their draft status (big bucks), or ruin a career. Even top level picks are refusing to now play in bowl games for fear if injury.

Pat McInally broke his leg on the touchdown catch you see him make and that was one of the reasons this series was discontinued. The Bengals were enraged when he received no medical attention, but was put out on the street with just a pair crutches. The next year the game was halted in the third quarter by a driving rain/electrical storm. Shortly thereafter this game was no more.

Yes this was a preseason game. It was one of the opening two games of the preseason. Besides the hall of fame game, the defending Super Bowl champions(or NFL champs before the Super Bowl) played a team of college all stars from the previous season who would be NFL rookies that season. The game slowly became less competitive over time and stopped drawing as well as it used to. In addition NFL teams were becoming more reluctant to let high draft picks play in the game where they may be injured before playing for the NFL team that held there rights. This in addition to higher insurance costs led to the game being discontinued after the 1976 season.

Thanks for posting this. I attended the game. Steelers trailed 7-0 and 14-7, but rallied in the second half with Gilliam at quarterback. The All-Star offense was no match for the Steel Curtain. Walter Payton never had a chance to show what he could (and did) do as a ball carrier. But the All-Star defense did a great job all night. Robert Brazile was built like a Sherman tank.

Wow this is super cool. Too bad they didn't do this anymore. Seeing guys like Walter Peyton, Randy White and other college All-Stars (some of who, like Peyton and White turned out to be exceptionally great players) take on a Pro team before they played an NFL game. I'm guessing the game was very similar to a preseason game, where the starters (at least for the Pro team) don't play for much more than a quarter. It's a shame they don't do this today. It would very cool to see, especially if it happened sometime between the Super Bowl and the Draft instead of after the draft. Sadly the money dominates the game today and guys don't want to risk any with an injury.

if you are referring to the Gorilla in the commercial, a Gorilla was a mascot for one of the white players, Roy Gerela who was the kicker for the Steelers during their championship years. The fan club of Gerela had a banner that read, "Gerela's Gorilla's ", and the guy in the commercial would wear the Gorilla suit at home games. So there was basically nothing racial implied there. But I see your point, probably would be a problem today. Gorilla suits were used a lot in movies and TV back in the 70's for comedic reasons but seem to be not used anymore quite a while ago.

The Steelers, like other NFL champs, treated this game as an exhibition. That's why Joe Gilliam and Terry Hanratty saw playing time, among other reserves. The college all star game rocked. It messed up the college guys because they reported late to NFL camps and sometimes got injured. The money involved just ended this game. The ultimate embaressment would be to lose to the college guys.

Team owners had to be sweating bullets watching their first round draft picks line up across players like Greene, Lambert and Blount. Of course this series got nixed for obvious reasons. Btw, I have one of those iron city beer commemorative cans to this day.

I remember these games..it was like little lambs being offered up for slaughter..lol..this was in the era of6 preseason games..two a day padded practices, two month long training camps, the players worked off season jobs, hence no year round conditioning, the product on the field was way way way more entertaining than the rigged over officiated farce that Goodell, the owners, players and TV networks churn out today..every game has to have the miracle unbelievable finish... gotta churn out those beer and truck commercials..lol...any body paying money to watch modern football college or pro, or even high school is a sucker. It's a waste of time

The injury that occurs early in this game might have been one the reasons. Free agency was just beginning in pro sports so the players and teams didn't want to take the risk of losing players in an exhibition game when a lot of money was at stake. The series was ended the year after this.

Randy White was considered by many, as the best defensive tackle in the game, during his career. He was definitely the best defensive player in college football, and a true All-Star on the field that night. If you watch the whole game, the Steelers had a terrible time trying to block him that night.

Here's some of the roster from 1975. The All-Stars included California QB Steve Bartkowski, HB Walter Payton from Jackson State, and Oregon TE Russ Francis on offense and, on defense, DT Randy White from Maryland, Jackson State LB Robert Brazile, and Ohio State CB Neal Colzie.
