Saw my old apartment in Avalon in those pics... looked exactly the same as when I left it. The building was already old when these pictures were taken - it's positively ancient now. So, the streetcars may be gone, but there's still a lot of history to be seen.

Thank you for this slideshow! I wish I was alive to have experienced the light rail in its full glory. I was born in 1984. I barley got to enjoy the 47D before they discontinued it. Hi Jonathan, Thanks for watching and for your kind words. I am pleased to have been able to share these memories. When I first visited Pittsburgh in 1964, most of the great system was still running. I never did see any of the West End lines, some of the North Side lines were already gone, as were the lines to McKeesport. But there was still plenty left to keep me occupied. I literally didn't know where to go first. 21-Fineview was always a highlight, but service was infrequent so photography was a challenge. If you haven't already done so, I hope you'll have a look at my other Pittsburgh streetcar and light rail videos. There are six in total. Stay well. Cheers, tassiebaz.

As mentioned in another video, I lived in the Pittsburgh area from 76-86. Many remnants of these lines still existed, ie track in the streets, overhead poles, cuts etc. Even at that late date it would have been possible to re-activate sections of many lines with a bit of thought and "creative additions". But it's all gone, never to return, but then a lot of the energy of Pittsburgh, the great heavy industry is gone today. Nothing is forever, so these pics bring back a lot of memories of a different time and place! P.S. Look at that pic at 17:08, where else in America would you see a trolley shot like that? Pittsburgh was tough and gritty, rough around the edges, but what charm!
@tassiebaz
@tassiebaz 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Reg, Absolutely agreed. After you left downtown, especially on the South Side, you could have been somewhere in rural America, not a big city. I rode the newer light rail and prefer the way it used to be, especially the Overbrook line, which has lost all its charm. As for Fineview, that was unique. I remember the first time I rode it, I was in disbelief where it was going, and it kept getting better. I always thought it would have been nice to have a tourist line that combined the 40 Mt Washington and the 21 Fineview. Now, that would have been a ride. Regards, tassiebaz.
@regmason2329
@regmason2329 5 жыл бұрын
@@tassiebaz I totally agree. It's been said before, but Pittsburgh ran trolley lines in areas that no other company would even think of doing! Two lines on streets that were so narrow, cars had to park on the sidewalk! And Fineview was more like a carnival ride, sharp turns, steep grades, and what scenes! IF, they had done something like DC Transit and Air Conditioned several cars, fixed them up and had a Fineview/ Mt Washington scenic tour- terminating at the Mt Washington Restaurant for dinner- Ohhhh the possibilities were endless in Pittsburgh. Take care, I love your work Reg

There was report on 60 minutes years ago how General Motors paid off all of the local politicians (Pittsburgh included) to replace them with their sticky buses... GM wanted people to buy more cars and this was one way of doing it because most people liked using streetcars rather than drive....Toronto still has Trolleys running through the city and beyond to this day... Canadians seem to have looked beyond the greed of money that we American seem to always succumb to...

One of the street cars had an advertisement on the side for the Buhl planetarium, which was located north of the Allegheny River. Each holiday season, they had a very large model railroad layout operating in the basement. Somewhere nearby was an almost complete grand junction - meaning that every track could get to every other track. 5th and Grant also had a similar arrangement, however not every piece of track was in revenue service. Given how those switches were operated, it must have required a lot of skill to maneuver through two consecutive switches a couple feet apart. Of course, you always had the handy crowbar available by the front door.
@tassiebaz
@tassiebaz Жыл бұрын
Hi Art, I think the intersection at Ohio and Federal Streets was close to a grand union. Also, there was a 3/4 grand union located at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Craig St in Oakland. I think that one of the two switches was power on/power off (or toggle on / off), while the other was manual (with possible automatic reset). In Melbourne, Australia, they use transponders with enough channels to be able to select one of the three possible routes. Philadelphia uses turn signals on the Kawasaki to select the route, and I'm sure other cities with complex intersections use some sort of modern technology. You are quire correct; the last resort is the switch iron. Cheers, tassiebaz.

I remember taking the streetcar from Crafton heights to Downtown. Half the trip was on rail right of way and only took about 15 minutes. The same trip later on buses took a half hour to 40 minutes. General Motors and politicians put streetcar systems throughout the country out of business and it was not an improvement, especially in Pittsburgh.

How interesting that some of the streetcar route numbers match pretty closely to the Port Authority bus route number!
@tassiebaz
@tassiebaz 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Theron, Thanks for watching and for your keen observation. Pittsburgh Railways had a logic to their streetcar route numbering. The lowest numbers started on the North Side and proceeded counter-clockwise around the metropolitan area. For example, Routes 1-21 were on the North Side, Routes 23-34 on the West End, Routes 35-53 on the South Side, etc. When they converted the lines to bus, they kept similar numbers in many, but not all cases. For example, Route 21 Fineview became bus 11E, and not, I believe is just Route 11. Stay well. Cheers, tassiebaz.

What the ...hell _happened_ to this country, man? We could've still modernized certain aspects of life without having to sacrifice all the art deco style and smooth rounded lines, without losing the chrome, without losing the class that made things aesthetically appealing. Instead of sending all our youth overseas to die for corporate interests, we could've been building a better society. One that doesn't bow down to the man and lick his jackboot. One that doesn't favor commercialism and conformity over reason and individuality. One that values all citizens equally.

What I noticed in this and the other vintage Pittsburgh videos is double tracks that go into a single track. Any particular reason for that. I know that for the Belgian Vicinal it had to do with time tables - half hour service on rural sections. Is that the case here as well?
@tassiebaz
@tassiebaz 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Enevan1968, Thanks for watching and for your comment. I think that in some places (like the line through Overbrook), it would have cost significant money to double-track the line in its entirety with not much operational gain. Having said that, it is now double tracked and modernized. In other places there wasn't enough room for two tracks, especially in some locations going around corners. Some route frequencies just didn't need two tracks to maintain the service. Regards, tassiebaz.

For the PCC cars, there were four groups, 1400, 1500, 1600, and 1700 I remember in the 1960s that they scrapped the first two groups on a track next to the South hills junction since there was no place to store them. Some of them were made before World war II. All the ones in these pictures and movies seem to be the 16 and 1700 series built in the late 1940s and early 1950s PCC street cars did not have air conditioning with the exception of one demonstration unit in Washington DC. They relied entirely on ventilation. The windows rarely worked. Some of the cars depicted are what are called the standee cars. They have windows above the main windows that a person who was standing could look out of. They were particularly unpleasant because the windows were sealed and it relied entirely on a fan in the ceiling. The PCC street cars dumped the energy from dynamic braking into resistor banks under the seats in the front. The heat was unbearable. Just imagine having PCC cars in Texas!

HOW FOOLISH! Pittsburgh streetcars ran on private right of way which SHOULD have been upgraded to light rail standards. Very shortsighted. THEY HAD IT!

Hi Drew K, Thanks for watching and for your insightful comment. Unfortunately, Pittsburgh is nor alone in this shortsightedness. Add Los Angeles, San Francisco (Key System), St. Louis, and other cities that destroyed what they had and then tried to rebuild at great cost. It's lucky the few Pittsburgh South Side lines survived so they could build on that. It would nice if the North Side got some light rail back. Stay well. Cheers, tassiebaz.

I miss streetcars. I miss Westview Park. I miss the Syria Mosque. Progress my ass. They just trashed anything that had any class, or any beauty, or any intrinsic value, and replaced it with cheap disposable plastic imitations. I miss America, and I want it back. We can keep our computers and our phones, but give us back our streetcars, and our Detroit musclecars, and our 60s gas prices. You can keep Donald Trump, we don't want him or his kind in this country anymore.

The only way to make America great again is to rebuild the streetcars and rebuild Penn Station. " We built the strongest economy in history"; what an f'ing joke.

It's called cultural marxism, or better known by its pseudonym "progressivism" and "neo-liberalism", hence the literal eroding and erasing of traditional America and its values/beliefs and core concepts, and Western society in general. Its trashed our society and fundamentally transformed it for the worse beyond words; it's ironic you talk about 'not wanting Trump or his kind,' well he and "his kind" were responsible for a litany of architectural feats back in the day, it was literally men like him that largely helped build this country into what it once was, and its his opponents and enemies and political adversaries largely responsible for the erosion of our society and are greatly speeding up the process... Should Alzheimer Joe and his ilk actually end up in the WH, then just watch America fully transform into an Orwellian Dystopia like George Orwell foretold, and say goodbye to any semblance of traditional America still left.

You have it backwards Jack, Trump is conservative, the assholes in there now are the ones burning down America as we know it.

Hi Sean, I received your email and replied the other day. I just replied again, which I hope you get. Basically, I said "Hi Sean, Thanks for your email and accompanying most interesting links. I am flattered that you want to use some of my footage for your production. You are authorised to use whatever you need to incorporate into your production. If there is some way I can assist further, please let me know. Stay well." So full steam ahead on your project.

@@tassiebaz I sent you an email using a different email addresses because I don't see your return email even though I have no doubt you sent them. Our SPAM filter at the Trib is very aggressive. Thank you for your offer to use the trolley footage. It's excellent stuff for sure! I am able to download the video from KZfaq but I was wondering if you have a higher resolution version?
