Full First Ride Write-up & Press Release:
theloamwolf.com/2022/09/01/release-first-ride-pivot-shuttle-lt/
We were lucky enough to receive a new Pivot Shuttle LT to review for a couple weeks before the launch of this new enduro-ready eBike. Hot on the heels of the recently released Pivot Shuttle SL, the new Shuttle LT boasts 160mm of DW-Link suspension paired to a 170mm fork, a Shimano STEPS EP8 drive unit, and a 756Wh battery. In the short period of time that we’ve had the bike we were able to put together this video review with our initial impressions and have a few takeaways. We look forward to putting a lot more miles in different terrain and conditions on our Pivot Shuttle LT for our long-term review, which we’ll work on ASAP. Until then, here’s our first impression.
Using the Pivot Firebird as inspiration for the capability and intended application of the new LT, Pivot had a big leap to make to bring the Shuttle up to speed from their mid-travel Shuttle AM (OG model). For many riders - ourselves included - this was the Shuttle we wanted to see Pivot deliver. It’s got a slightly slimmer, more appealing aesthetic and has the travel aggressive riders have been waiting for.
Pivot did a nice job taking the good things about their mid-travel Shuttle AM and giving it a healthy dose of growth hormones. They also paid attention to the critical feedback they received on the original model and worked to address and improve these elements and more. Gone is the bloated belly and conservative geometry, in comes a sleek aesthetic and geometry that is ready to rip in combination with the bump up in travel.
The new Pivot Shuttle LT’s long geometry had us debating on whether sizing down to a medium or sticking with the large would be the best fit. At 5’11”-6’1”, our test crew have long been riding larges, but find that our preferred 475-480mm reach is now floating in a “no-fly zone” as larges tend to hover around the 490mm reach area and mediums tend to fall around 465-470mm. We went for the Large in the end, which worked well after some adjustment period. If you’re also wondering which direction to go, Pivot Cycles has a live chat feature on their site where you can ask their team of experts for input based on your height, terrain, and riding style.
Moving beyond the reach we look forward to spending more time fine-tuning the geometry for our trails. In the Low setting, the bike’s 64-degree head tube angle was plenty slack enough for the steepest and fastest trails we found. The 77-degree seat tube angle puts you in a comfortable position while pedaling, without being overly upright and limiting rear wheel traction on the climbs. Something that stood out during our first rides was the 653mm stack height. This puts the stack on Pivot’s Shuttle LT higher than any of the bikes we tested in our 2022 eMTB Shootout several months ago, and will likely have us dropping the stem even further down the steerer tube.
Out back the 439mm chainstays are super short in the eMTB world, giving a fun and playful feel. In some ways it served as a great counterbalance to the long front end, however in our early testing it also gave us a contrasting feeling of two different bikes from the front to the back in certain awkward corners. We started to figure out how to shift our weight appropriately to get the short, snappy back end to come around and compensate for the long front end. This issue is certainly not going to be the same for everyone, as many riders out there seem to be loving the long front ends for their local trails and riding styles. It does have us wondering if a medium may have been the better call, but the large size Shuttle LT had its benefits. The ability to claw its way up steep climbs was impressive, with the short chainstays failing to spoil the ease of keeping the front wheel planted and in control on the way up the hill.
We found the front end to dive a bit on the steep, brake-heavy corners so we will be experimenting with dropping the bars some more (to offset the high stack height) and adding a volume reducer to the fork to have our body weight a little more balanced and stable. We suspect that more time aboard Pivot’s Shuttle LT will remedy the infrequent issue that we experienced in our early rides as we become better acquainted with its weight distribution.

Pivots newest range of bikes have been really impressive and the shuttle is a great add. I am 5’11 myself and probably would size down to a medium frame after looking at the Geo. I ride in SoCal, Ventura county so a longer bike isn’t always ideal with our tight switchbacks.
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
Yeah that may be a good call. While many of are trails are super fast and chunky, the tighter and steeper switchbacks and awkward (multi-use trail) corners would probably have me selecting a Medium if we still lived in Thousand Oaks too...

Noise could be the dreaded Shimano motor “Clunk” or rattle. They really need to fix that and surprised Shimano have not addressed it yet. I could be wrong but that was a very loud rattle in the video footage. I also have only ever heard it when riding full powered Shimano motor powered ebikes like the SC Bullit among others. Please provide an update on the “rattle” when you can.
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
@@Grifterbiden It's definitely coming from the downtube/battery connection. Per Pivot, the bracket that holds the battery in place can loosen during "break-in" allowing the battery to rattle against the downtube, which is what happened to ours. Super quick fix.

I think with E-bike reviews the motors and how they perform are key. While the bike itself in all other areas may be great if the motor just is not up to Bosch or Specialized level refinements and lack of rattles that is a big call out. It feels you guys know this as well but are worried to point it out with the Shimano bikes. Just my thought as I think you do really honest reviews.
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking time to write in. We definitely pride ourselves on honesty. And to that point, we really don’t seem to have as big of an issue with Shimano as others do. Each unit has pro and con. There are bikes we’d much rather own with Shimano than a bike that doesn’t mountain bike as well but has Bosch.

I ride a Nomad 5 and a Bullit with VPP, both of which are long travel bikes, one with coil front/rear 180/178mm. I have an older (2nd gen) Shuttle with 140mm DW link and I have to say, that it's almost there with the 170 VPP. Very surprisingly. I was riding it for 2 months as my ep8 crapped out on the Bullit, back-to-back with the 180/178mm Nomad and it pretty much kept up. Yes, there are no miracles... but ... really surprising how well it performs. I am also curious how a 160 DW link feels. ... I am still divided on the ep8 issues, but frankly I am considering it again to pick a new LT up :O

@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
Not yet, Pivot's claimed weight for the Team XTR model we have is a hair over 49 lbs in likely a small frame. We will get actual weight soon. It's 1 pound heavier than the AM, but also has a larger battery so not a huge difference all things considered.

Did you ask Chris at Pivot why there is no X2 Air? Why go with the Float X? for enduro style seems like X2 would be better..
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
They opted for the Float X as its a bit more tunable than the X2 and it wont need to be serviced as quickly. They essentially wanted something that was easier for the customer to dial in. Per my notes from media camp, might be missing a little bit of info, but that's the gist.

I have a xl shuttle and noticed the Lt numbers are a bit larger, wondering if the longer reach will put me into a large vs XL. The XL shuttle fits me really well. Going to give the SL a try in XL, hopefully that was a wise decision as well. Since you have ridden them all do you think you would go with the same size across the board or size down on the LT?
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
We'd likely size down on the LT. With the SL, we'd stick with our normal sizing (large). I rode the SL in both XL and L back to back on the trail, and didn't notice much difference in the cockpit as far as comfort goes, but the wheelbase was noticeable on the trail. -Sean (6'2")

Awesome bike! Having increased the reach numbers, is the riding position overly stretched but still remain comfortable when pedaling? Also, would you describe the Shuttle LT more race focused compared to the Evil Epocalypse being more free ride? Where would these two new Emtb stand in your 2022 Enduro shootout? Waiting for more videos on the Shuttle! Cheers!

Thank you for watching. The same testers have not yet spent time aboard both bikes for a relative comparison but the Pivot would likely be our pick so far. No it doesn’t feel overly stretched out, however the sizing gaps do leave some decision making up to the consumer. @TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
Ohh boy that's a tough one... This bike feels a bit stiffer (not in a bad way_) in terms of suspension platform. It is shorter travel which probably contributes to that in conjunction with DW platform. The chainstays are also drastically shorter than the Scott, which makes the back end a lot snappier...More time is definitely needed. But Scott is a bad ass machine, has Bosch drive unit, and costs several thousand less...

As much as I love the Ransom that is a fantastic capable bike for the money, I think Pivot has nailed it in the Enduro Emtb. I don’t think there is an other bike in the market right now, full carbon, full power, with a huge 756w battery, weighing just under 50 lbs!And for those wanting more travel, Pivot says you can fit an 180mm fork in the front, so the bike is definitely on my list. There is also the new Moterra LT with same travel, same huge battery but not aware of the weight, but for me Pivot is the bike I am probably going with. @TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
Without getting into much, I would personally rather have the Shuttle SL (if we are talking SL category) even though its shorter on travel, it rides like it has a bit more. It's also got one of the bigger batteries (430 WH) in the SL realm, it's quite efficient and still pounds lighter than the competition (model dependent). Once the 210/215WH extender is available, range will be insane. We did 20 miles this week, but only 1800 ft of vert and only killed 2 bars in River (trail) mode. That said, the rumor mill has been spinning with quite a few potential SL bikes coming to market soonish. -Sean

@@TheLoamWolf Maaaaan! 🤦🏼‍♂️😂 I love the look of the Shuttle SL and it would be perfect for the majority of riding I do but had discounted it as I want something that can take a bit of punishment at the odd bike park or rougher trail, hence waiting for a look at the new Levo SL which I expect to be 150/150 with the new Mahle motor with 50nm? I’m struggling to to even decide between full power and ‘SL’ as the SL bikes are more mid-power now, which is fine for my needs. I need to buy something though because there is always something new/better coming out 😬 My head hurts.
@TheLoamWolf
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
I suppose given the type of riding you want it to be capable of, the Levo SL would be the ticket, or even the new Transition Relay (we havent ridden it and likely wont ever get one) but the Fazua motor is pretty slick and has 60nm of torque. I "can't" speak on the Levo SL and any updates it might get but it'll likely be a long while before we see a new one come out. Drew would tell you to get a full power because he's not a fan of the SL's at the moment, but as someone who has ridden quite a few this year, I'm leaning towards being an SL convert, they way nimbler on the trail. The biggest thing is SLs require a different mindset/riding style than full power eebs.
