Anxiety turning Riley's Imagination Land into an animation sweatshop where joy isn't allowed is such a corporate clapback that I'm so glad Disney didn't remove.

“You feel less joy when you grow up.” Dude, I teared up so much at that line my seven year old son held my hand and said, “it’s ok daddy.”

I love how Anxiety isn't really a villain. She's a normal emotion who means well like the others, while also showing why it's important to keep it in check.

I'm baffled by the people who said Anger was "out of character" in the movie. You mean the little dude who's just as focused in protecting Riley might also have a softer side!? Who would've thought!?

Only problem with its current success is that Disney is using it as an excuse to say original passion projects aren’t profitable, ignoring the fact that the reason those films did poorly was because they basically trained people to wait for their Disney+ releases and did a terrible job marketing them.

Didn't surprise me that the movie about literal emotions had the only accurate portrayal of an anxiety attack since Puss in Boots 2

Whenever people nitpick the logic of the world of Inside Out, as someone who studied neuroscience at school, but who also appreciates art…I just wanna scream, "THIS IS IRRELEVANT!" The concept of a homunculus, or a little man running the show inside the brain as a thought experiment is just that, a rhetorical abstraction. It's never meant to be taken literally. It's like when you see the performers behind the animal costumes for the Lion King musical onstage…it doesn't matter because the ride we are on is highly enjoyable as a story. Calm down, folks

Inside Out 2 is a testament to how Pixar's recent work has been better than Disney Animations' work lately

I prefer to consider the emotions in inside out as abstract personifications of Riley's feelings and mental states. They're not /actually/ there controlling her, but are instead a way to demonstrate her innermost feelings and thought processes on both a conscious and subconscious level. Arguably would mean that these characters and the events that happen within Riley's mind there do not exist within that universe. Their abstract nature is also why they, and their actions don't always make sense. For instance, in the first one, it's not actually joy suppressing sadness, but rather Riley trying to use that feeling of joy with her past memories to suppress the sadness she's feeling after the big life changes. And then at some point, both of them being thrown out the window, and the movement toward emotional shutdown is pointing to the representation of depression, a profoundly numb state where both joy and sadness hold little meaning.

I remember someone saying that marvel destroyed people's vision of the box office because if a movie doesn't make a bajilion dollars in 2 days then the studio says that's it's a flop and takes it away from cinemas

Anxiety: “You guys are fired” Joy: “You can’t fire us, we don’t even exist, we’re just a clever visual metaphor used to personify the abstract concept of thought”

Of course, I’m glad that “Inside Out 2” captured such a W for Pixar, but… ya know what? I ain’t gonna jinx it and just be glad they secured this victory.

Considering how the first movie showed Joy emerge out of thin air, I imagine that's how the new emotions came into existence during this film. And depending on how many emotions the staff will introduce in potential later productions, I'm guessing the other emotions will have their own space in other parts of the headquarters. The fact that Nostalgia seems to possess her own little area in the base gave me that idea. Also, Anxiety is the best new emotion here.

Disney+ is the biggest problem, and DISNEY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER! In the 1980s, home video almost sank Disney. Disney dumped their movies onto VHS and people stopped going to the theater. Disney released Pinnochio on VHS and Black Cauldron in theaters the same month, and most parents bought the video tape. Disney put a moratorium on video tape sales - which eventually became the "Disney Vault" - in time for The Little Mermaid and audiences returned to theaters. Limiting home video saved Disney's box office. Disney+ is the exact same situation, it's killing Disney's box office. The irony is, every family that UNsubscribes to Disney+ is a family that will potentially go to the theater to see a Disney or Pixar movie.

What should be taken away from this sequel’s success: animated movies with GOOD STORY and SPECTACULAR ANIMATION perform well with audiences, it doesn’t matter if they’re sequels or original properties. Knowing executives they’ll most likely take away “oh people want more sequels and spin-offs” instead of the idea that people want movies with good execution, visuals, and don’t dumb it down bc it’s “a medium for kids” (bc animation is NOT a medium for kids, it’s for everyone).

Well let’s just hope Pixar won’t be dumping out even more sequels because of Inside Out 2 success but I certainly think they will do it due to Disney holding them at gun point and force them to do it out of mandatory.

It should be remembered this is Pixar's victory, not Disney's. And winning one battle doesn't win a whole war. Disney (and by extension Pixar) are still in the red.

I dont get why so many people hate on anxiety, she means well throughout the whole film and you can get where shes coming from because she just wants to help riley, sure it was bad to kick out all the other emotions but she just wanted to help. The plot of her slowly realising that maybe riley needs some time to think for herself and its too much stress to constantly feel anxious was good. And the panic attack scene, it was all too real and relatable for id say a lot of people, it wasnt just riley who was panicking it was anxiety herself who freaked out so much she didnt know what to do, and it took a lot of help from joy to help her calm down.

Fun Fact: Pixar intentionally waited years after the first Inside Out movie. They probably did this so as we grew up, Riley’s experience and emotions and how they affected her would be more relatable and understandable. They also brought in 9 teenagers into the studio to review and comment on Riley’s emotions to make sure that it was as accurate and relatable as possible.

I thought both movies made it clear that the emotions were never "in control" of Riley. They could input suggestions and what they desire into the console, but it was up to Riley to act on them, just like people in real life can choose to act upon their emotions or not. As a child, in the first movie, Riley was more sensitive to the emotions, but as a teenager in the second movie, she develops a sense of self thanks to the beliefs she developed from her memories, so she relies less on pure emotion. The belief system also being different from the islands of personality: "What do I act like" vs "Who I am". Nostalgia showing up also shows that the emotions were there all along. They just weren't in "headquarters". I assume they had some influence from wherever they were, but in climbing up to headquarters, they have a much bigger influence.

I have generalized anxiety disorder and that scene where anxiety basically makes a tornado around the control panel hit so hard. The way she was completely frozen as well, clearly wanting to pull away but unable to, and how the tornado kept going even after she let go. It was such a good artistic portrayal of what anxiety attacks really are like.

My favorite little thing in the movie is how all of Anxiety’s belief are conditional. “If I get into the FireHawks, THEN I won’t be alone.” Having your sense of self tied to something external like that is exactly how depression starts. What happens when somebody say’s “You’re not ready.” When your entire belief system is structures around needing to be?

This is surreal. I work at retail and NEVER seen Inside Out, however I got parents and grandparents buying movie snacks (Cause prices for boxed candy is a joke) and are planning to see the movie with their young ones. But one parent, likely a aunt or grandma, says that this movie hit so much relatablity, especially when dealing with anxiety. I can't tell my own emotions anymore but the concept of Inside Out 2 just clicks hard now to me, and I likely made my little brain people worry. 🥺 I'm fine. It's just.. Amazing that this movie hits almost all audience and it's it's big W for Pixar.

The entire reason why Joy realized that Sadness is necessary, is because Reily's homesickness motivated her to run away, despite the emotions best efforts to stop her (but Sadness helped Reily connect with others, so she stopped).

Something I find hilariously ironic is that Anxiety is a completely perfect representation of what Pixar was becoming. Afraid of potential failure, she drastically changed Riley in order to make her appeal to the popular crowd. In doing so, Riley's emotions were stunted, being stuck doing what was "cool" instead of doing what she wanted. Here's hoping that Pixar learns their lesson like Anxiety did!

I feel like the sequel did so well because Inside Out was MEANT to have a sequel. Stress and depression after moving is a wonderful movie idea from the perspective of the mind, and puberty in that environment is a story alone that as a whole can fit into a whole novel. Emotions are always changing, maturing. Learning. There's always new emotions, new experiences, new changed, and those are prime opportunity for the Inside Out universe to continue. It seemed less like a sequel and more like a continuation, which is what a sequel SHOULD be, not just a way for some spare bucks. They genuinely enjoyed making this movie, I could tell. Sometimes, passion projects don't have to make sense.

Inside Out 2, for me didn't feel necessary but a welcome movie nonetheless, sure, it wasn't as emotional as the first, rip BingBong, but in exchange, it gave us a more mature movie, was it as good as the first movie? For me, I prefer the first, but such is the challenge for a sequel, that said, everything else was a level up from the first and I'm just geeking out cause all of them are so adorable! I love how they balanced the cast, sure the new emotion felt flat but they didn't need to steal the show, they did what they were supposed to do and finished clean, I'm just glad they weren't as one-note as the Sing Franchise, which I also love btw. Also, the animation felt fresh and inspired, not groundbreaking but quirky and charming, overall a solid 7.5/10, if you have time, grab a ticket and go have fun. What I also love from both the first and the sequel is both are very profound in the message that they deliver, especially this one. "Our emotion doesn't define us" and how "Every experience shapes us who we are" aside from the obvious "Don't let anxiety control your life" Lots of very profound and wise lessons were taught and were nicely delivered, a Movie for all ages! But something isn't anything without its flaws, the reason why my score isn't as high is that the Movie felt fast and was a 1 to 1 copy-paste of the first movie, which I don't hate, but it could have been more if the movie wasn't just a copy paste of the movie, and since I just rewatched the first movie before viewing this, I just could predict the story, well because, fundamentally, it was the same movie, as for the being fast part, I just felt I couldn't breathe, it just jump cut to jump cut from one high note scene to another, the movie stayed, for the most part, on a high note, but I'm glad the movie slowed down in the end, just a moment for us to reflect on this amazing roller coaster of a movie. 7.5/10 Would I go out of my way to watch it again? definitely not, but if you want something to watch with your family, here's a surefire recommendation for all of you to have a good time. But hey if yall are still reading this comment, if you want an emotional Movie I recommend Robot Dreams, something that will really touch all of your emotions, check out the trailer, I really cannot recomend it enough, also Im very lonely as I am the only person in my life that has seen it and thus I dont have anyone to geek out about Robot Dreams with, so theres that too hehe, but be sure to check it out as for me, it is a 10/10, objectively it is a 8.5ish or 9/10 but for me the GOAT of all movies AND IT SHOULD HAVE WON THE OSCAR AS THE BEST ANIMATED FEATURE OF 2023 AND I CANT AGHHH---

As you mentioned a few things towards the end of your review I was getting worried that you were about to give away some spoilers but I'm thankful you didn't. Most likely I'm going to wait for it on Disney Plus and it's mostly just because really I work 7 days a week and well I was going through an extremely stressful time very recently that I'm just not going to get into and I kind of have to just stick to the grind and keep working to get out of this financial burden basically. Anyways I'm looking forward to seeing the film. Maybe there's a chance I'll see it in theaters but it's not likely.

The scene of Riley's anxiety attack really hit me. As a very anxious child (and adult) I can't imagine how much I would have benefited from seeing a representation like that. Something to show me that how I was feeling was valid, that it wasn't bad or wrong to feel that way, and that there was a way through it. I took me a long time to figure out the right words to describe how I was feeling, and I'm really grateful that my daughter gets to grow up with films and shows that explore these things in productive and honest ways.

Wall-E was good, then they fired all the talent. 💦

I really love this movie, it felt like a good continuation of the first movie's story and I was so happy that the character development was still intact. So, on the merits of the movie itself, I'm happy Inside Out 2 is doing well financially. However... I have this nagging feeling in the back of my head that people at the head of Pixar (or Disney more likely) are going to take the wrong lesson from this and use this as an example of "see, our original works aren't landing with audiences, so we'll just keep making sequels and spinoffs."
