Is it just me or does the pixel 2 camera video shots actually look better? pixel 3 blew out the exposure (especially the sky) in a couple of the scene while pixel 2 managed to keep it balanced. what have you done, Google?

True but the Pixel 2’s video is bad in the first place in terms of dynamic range and video noise. Doesn’t compare to something like an iPhone. It’s quality stands out because of image processing.

lol Pixel 3 is overexposing in some of the scenes. I liked Pixel 2 performance slightly more. Basically it's the same hardware, so it's nothing unusual. The most interesting camera battle of 2018 is Xperia XZ2 Premium VS Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but unfortunately no one has done it.

Yeah but it could be the angles I had the two phones slightly at different angle due to my rig not made for it.

@@BIGMACMCDONALDLEE i don't think that overexposed sky is because of the slightly different angle. It could been the glares, bot not the sky. I think it comes from the algorithms which are meant to make nighttime shooting better so Pixel 3 is making the exposition slightly longer. Overall i think is doesn't worth the upgrade. Most overrated smartphone of 2018. I think the dedicated monochrome sensor for fusion of high dynamic range shots is the way of smartphone photography should follow. And the leaders are Huawei P20 Pro and Xperia ZX2 premium. Mate 20 Pro is also impressive, but i would gladly see the comparison with Sony's device...

Thanks for doing this. I'm trying to choose between the two. The better audio of the Pixel 2 sealed the deal for me, plus the photo's and video of the pixel 2 look a bit warmer and less washed out in high contrast situations.

Hey Max. I need your suggestion on whether to buy a Pixel 2XL or Pixel 3XL as I was really pumped to buy the Pixel 3XL but after watching this I am confused. My main reason to buy a Pixel device is the camera and since the performance is identical then I have no reason to buy the latest one as it is very costly as well. Do reply please.

I have both devices and compared back camera of Pixel 2 with back camera of Pixel 3. Even the Pixel 3 super res zoom doesn't seem to be better - even when you zoom in to analyze the pictures. It is ridiculous.

Video seems a bit softer in general on Pixel 2 than 3. Saturation looks better on 2. Audio is definitely better on 2. P.S. Why on Erp are you using Windows 7?

Hey, awesome vid! Makes me not want to get the pixel3 as much. Can you force the pixel 3 to use the wide angle front lens for vid or is it already? I thought there was a seperate lens for wide on the front but I didn't see it change when you were going to wide.. this is the only main reason i was considering upgrading from my s8 plus to pixel 3. I do alot of Skyping with friends and it would be awesome to have that wider field of view.

Hey.. good to hear, and thanks for the reply! I may have to finally upgrade.. the s8 plus has been pretty spot on and haven't felt the urge to upgrade. Every phone I ever get I'm always trying to make it feel more stock android(except for my Nexus 6).. will be nice not having to try. Only phone I was kinda waiting to see is the 6T but I doubt it's gonna have that wide angle front lens.. so maybe I wont wait

According to Google, "We made several advances in the audio recording capabilities of Pixel 3, including enabling stereo recording in landscape mode. When recording outdoors, our tuning is specifically designed to reduce background noise like wind and road noise and overly loud sounds and optimize for audible speech. To achieve this, we selectively de-emphasize some frequencies, which minimizes disruptive noises and optimizes the resulting audio. We do extensive user testing of our products to ensure they are tuned for real world usage, and we’re always looking at additional tuning opportunities based on user feedback" This is why Pixel 2 audio is better (not microphone) but has lots of background noise. Pixel 3 has less background noise, but poor audio quality.

Yes I raised the volume for both to near audible otherwise sound was too low to hear.

There's actually still three microphones on the Pixel 3, they're just concealed in the speaker grills, just like the third bottom microphone on the Pixel 2 where it is located inside the speaker grill. Unfortunately, doing this would probably explain why the audio recording quality is worse than the Pixel 2, where the mics are not affected by the speaker grill material.

He literally installed the Camera app from the Pixel 3 onto the Pixel 2 and used that to take photos vs. using the Camera app that came with the Pixel 2.

Max I pointed this out on your other comparison video that the pixel 2 with pixel 3 apk does not yeild the same portrait results in terms of quality but the pixel 2 XL however does. There is some kind of software issue here. Even with the official camera update for pixel 2 just released it is still an issue. Someone please test this.

I understand, Please compare pixel 2 to pixel 2 xl with the latest software update for the camera on the play store. The pixel 2 Xl has the same quality portraits as the pixel 3. I can make a video and send it to you when I get home but there is a clear distinction between the regular pixel 2 vs pixel 2 xl. I promise lol. Google updated the pixel camera app to have a new learning based portrait algorithm that should work in the older pixels, it seems to work on pixel 2 XL, but the regular pixel 2 does not yeild the same results. Unless i'm crazy but i've tested this on several photos side by side and there is a huge difference.

You can just install the APK, also Google is rolling out update so just try updating google camera app on Play Store.

I've still have the 2xl and just got the smaller 3. Screen quality is much better. Like Max said, overall a more complete phone. 2xl feels hollow when you press on the screen, the new one does not. Pic quality is slightly better but experience is much improved. If you have the money, it's not a bad upgrade. If you can hold out for the 4, would be a better jump.

I like the Pixel 2 better. I guess Ill hold on to my Pixel 2 and wait on the Pixel 4. I like the Pixel 2 better than any other camera. I'm just glad Google doesn't do that crappy face smoothing that Samsung and most other phones do to faces I love detail in the face it just feels more real.
