The pixel art in Eastward is phenomenal. By far the best thing for me. I was often surprised how much effort was put into so many little things.

Thanks, I'm trying to figure out where to go with this channel with the amount of time I have. Assessing game trailers for indie games is a good fit for me for now and I think the big podcasts are my dream

I'm really really really surprised this game didn't get game of the year. Beautiful art. Ground breaking soundtrack. Definitely blows most triple A title trash out of the water.

I don't remember looking up anything related to eastward recently, I just redownloaded the game on steam and started playing it for 20 minutes earlier today. Yet why does youtube suddenly start recommending me Eastward videos? It's literally been years since this game even came out. I avoided looking up anything about it because it wasn't working on my old computer.

Thanks for the breakdown. I was wondering what you think about these additional effects: Would the game have looked more faithful to its retro aesthetic if the blooms, colour grades, emission effects etc. were also pixellated later, rather than looking smoother?

hmmm it would have looked more traditional, there are ways the aesthetic could work in either direction. but concessions are made either way

Hello sir, this video is amazing and i learn a lot of things in this video. But i just want to ask some questions to the professional pixel artist like you about: - Does modern top-down pixel game like Eastward need tile-sets ? Like you draw the ground directly and put it in the engine or you need to draw the ground tile-set ? Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you very much! Sorry for my broken English.

You can do it either way depending on your game. You can create more organic environments if you don't limit yourself to tiles and it could be fine depending on how many maps you need. I've done both in different games.
